Engaging mini-album from self-styled ‘Country Soul Brother’ Jeb Loy Nichols: an American transplanted to a remote small holding in the Welsh hills, fusing funk and soul with touches of trip hop, country and folk. The result is a fantastic, well produced 6 track set in the form of ‘Ya Smell Me?’, limited to 350 copies on 10” vinyl complete with transparent Perspex graffiti insert. The compact format gives a real sense of cohesion to the tracks here. ‘7 Days in December’ sounds like something that wouldn’t be out of place on the Truth And Soul logo, ‘Pretty Lonesome’ is alt-blues country with soul, ‘Wintering of The Year’ sounds like Nick Drake with a Jazz band accompaniment while ‘Regret’ has a JB lick and a ‘Funky Drummer’ break. ‘My Mistake’ again calls to mind the Truth And Soul blueprint and the socio-commentary ‘That’s How We’re Living’ includes elements of the Expressions’ ‘Money Is King’ – another Truth And Soul cut. Really good stuff!
