UK’s Laura Mvula has produced an album with a lot of characterful shades – brushing against everything from experimental jazz inflected pop to orchestrated dance grooves this is an engaging set that demands a few listens to get to grips with. Vocally at times she comes close to Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse is equal measure, especially on the stop-start ‘Lucky Man’ and the choral dance vibe of ‘Let me Go’ while the best moments on this diverse and angular album are ‘Overcome’ (featuring Nile Rogers) and the pounding ‘Phenomenal Woman’. Definitely one for those who like a musical challenge.
