1967 album from Lou Rawls on top form, ‘Soulin’ is a blend of Sam Cooke styled sixties ballads in the form of ‘Love Is A Hurting Thing’ and ‘Whole Lotta Woman’, bluesy jazz backed numbers, in particular ‘So Hard To Laugh, So Easy To Cry’ and the classic ‘It Was A Very Good Year’ and swinging big band efforts like ‘On A Clear Day’ and ‘Autumn Leaves’ as well as the stomping ‘Breaking My Back Instead of Using My Mind’. Good varied album: impeccable playing and that unforgettable voice.
