71 year old Martha High was James Brown’s on-stage backing singer for 30 years and toured the world with the Godfather of Soul. Her vocals are still strong and the tracks here are defiantly retro in feel. ‘I Can’t Hold On’ is a superb blues-inflected mid tempo with a bouncing bass bubbling away under the minor key guitar and horns, ‘The Hardest Working Woman’ is a jaunty blues-soul dancer, ‘Singing This Song’ has deep message set to a good horn heavy groove with some nice key changes, ‘You Baby’ is an early 60’s, classic sounding beat ballad that has echoes of ‘All In The Game’ while ‘Fire Shut Up In My Bones’ and ‘The Good Times’ are both powerful, full on dancers.
