Brazilian Joyce Moreno – better known as simply Joyce – has a recording career dating back to 1968 when she made her first, self-titled album for Philips. ‘Raiz’ – sung entirely in Portuguese – means ‘roots’ and this album is a celebration of some of her favourite Bossa Nova and Jazz standards, backed by a trio including jazz pianist Helio Alves and her percussionist husband, Tutty Moreno. The uptempo ‘Meu Piao’ is a joyous, breezy Bossa dancer, as is the simple but effective ‘Tamba’ with its urgent piano work running through its heart. ‘Na Baixa do Sapateiro’ is a lush, full sounding mid tempo effort with Joyce’s effortless vocals draping themselves over the backing while ‘Céu e Mar’ is a summery, fast paced highlight that paints an image of carefree times on a warm, breezy beach: something for the summer maybe!
