Prolific songwriter, producer and DJ from New York, Ray Lugo has worked with a who’s who of soul, jazz and Latin artists over the past two decades as well as being a member of the modern day afro-beat combo Kokolo. ‘Que Chevere’ is his second Latin soul set chock full of dancefloor fire that sounds like it came out of the 1960s Big Apple: steamy, boogaloo clashing with Latino grooves. The title translates as ‘How Groovy’ and that’s exactly what this album is: “Ven Al Jala Jala” is a killer trumpet lead, slab of rhythm madness, ‘C’Mon Everybody’ slinks and slides around with sass and class, ‘Terremotto’ rolls along at a jazz dance pace while the title track is a catchy vocal dancer that’ll stay in your head all day. Really strong Latin Soul set.
