Algerian Ahmed Malik was one of the most important figures in his country’s music scene of the early 70s and this release pulls together his best works plus a grip of unreleased compositions from the family archive. As the name would suggest Malik produced soundtracks for Algerian films of the day. The big, drama filled ‘Tikjda’ is a multi-cultural fusion of jazz, funk and exotica, ‘la Ville’ sounds like a funked up north African chase theme, ‘Maya’ is a heavy, broody slice of desert Jazz while ‘Les Silences De Cendres’ is a lush soundscape that brings to mind an crime/spy drama. Lots of exciting stuff to explore here that would have otherwise remain largely unheard.
