Fantastic album from the ever reliable Truth & Soul stable, this could almost be described as a kind of female Lee fields set: Leon Michels and Jeff silverman’s faultless production and writing skills creating a lush, at times moody and dark atmosphere in which the ladies – Nicole Wray and Terri Walker – narrate various tales of female empowerment and ambition. Songs like ‘Money’ tell of self-made women, ‘Sweet lady’ is an ode to mothers everywhere while the swaggering ‘Please Don’t Do It Again’ tells of forgiveness among best friends. The opening track ‘Tell The Truth’ is a sweet, pleading 60s soundalike with stunning vocals, ‘Hold On’ sounds similar to some of Kylie Auldist’s work, ‘Get Ready’ is a sparse, gritty dancer with a chorus that’ll stay with you for days and ‘Habit’ and ‘If You Wanna Be My Man’ are fantastic deep soul cuts, the latter with a wonderful warmth in the production. Hard to pick out a best track on an album that really gels as a whole and is set to become an instant classic in the ‘new funk’ genre. Very, very good.
