Legendary Detroit guitarist Dennis Coffey was resident at the city’s Morey Baker Showplace Lounge club for several years from 1967 along with Organist Lyman Woodward and drummer Melvin Davis, and this vital record offers a never before released glimpse into the kinds of sounds they treated (mainly white, middle class) club goers to. The slant was more listening than dancing but the ever evolving repertoire – which included soul, jazz and rock/pop covers – was served up with an energy and creativity befitting the Motor City’s best. The trio really cook on numbers like ‘Casanova’ (Ruby Andrews) the funk-rock of ‘Fuzz’, the languid ‘Look Of Love’ and the pacier ‘Big D’. There’s a rawness to the performance that really brings through the live feel on this engaging set.
