Combining just keyboards, bass and drums Portland’s Trio Subtronic release their fifth album in the form of ‘Ficiton’ a groove heavy voyage of funk rhythms, heavy soul improvisations and jazz colours. ‘El temblor’ has hints of Rueben Wilson and Prestige era funky jazz, ‘Refraction’ is a languid bluesy organ led head nodder while ‘Pinball’ has a real late 70s West Coast feel to it. ‘Hernan’s Groove’ is also a highlight – a pacey, funky jazz number that sounds like it was created by a bigger combo than a trio. Edgy and intriguing stuff.
