From 1962, Sonny Rollins returned after a two year recording hiatus with ‘What’s New’. The album bristles with Latin influenced grooves. The album kicks off with the fiery a version of ‘If Ever I Would Leave You’. This under-rated 11-minute tune cooks as does the almost as long ‘Jungoso’ that’s uses just bass and conga courtesy of Candido. The take of ‘The Night Has A Thousand Eyes’ is a Bossa delight in a Stan Getz kind of way. ‘Brown Skin Girl’ adds a touch of the Caribbean. Rollins’ playing is out of the top draw. Awesome.
