Debut album from Nashville’s Kandace Springs includes guest appearances from the likes of Terrance Blanchard and Mal Waldren and the album – recorded for Blue Note – is an eclectic mix of Jazz and Soul with influences ranging from Billie Holiday to Norah Jones, Nina Simone to Roberta Flack. There are hints of label mate Gregory Porter on some of the tracks, notably the subtle ballad ‘Place To Hide’, the tender ‘Thought It Would Be Easier’ and soaring ‘Novacaine Heart’. ‘The World Is A Ghetto’ is a good cover of War’s classic while Kandace’s own composition ‘Rain Falling’ sees everything stripped back to just her voice with piano. The production, arrangements and playing are faultless throughout.
