Roy Ayers recorded his classic album ‘Red Black And Green’ with Ubiquity in 1973, the tight band included Harry Whitaker, Charles Tolliver, Garnet Brown ,Sonny Fortune and Dennis Davis. It is one of my favourite albums by the great man. ‘Red Black And Green’ is a superb upper tempo groove with a vocal chant. ‘Cocoa Butter’ is a lovely uptempo instrumental which really highlights Roys vibes. ‘Henceforth’ and ‘Rhythms Of Your Mind’ are funky grooves with a blaxploitation feel, not surprising as the album is from the same period as his classic soundtrack ‘Coffy’.
There are some really good covers of Soul hits of the time ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’ , ‘Daydreraming’and ‘Aint No Sunshine’, which put a different slant on these well known tracks. The string arrangements are also really gopod and unusual for Ayers.
Great album.
