FROM THE VAULTS
EXPAND YOUR MIND BODY AND SOUL…..
Expansion is, if not the leading, one of the leading independent Soul labels in the UK. Its catalogue stretches back over 20 years and has included the likes of Gary Taylor, Leon Ware and Frank McComb in its repertoire. Expansion continues to release great albums. See our album for October: Maysa – Metamorphosis plus the Soul Togetherness series, the 2008 release arrived last week and is deservedly selling like hot cakes.
I thought I would feature over the next few weeks some of the finest albums from the Expansion back catalogue.
MAYSA – ALL MY LIFE CD £12.95
One of this writer’s favourite contemporary singers, whose vocals have graced many Incognito classics, recorded this album back in 1999. produced by Bluey (of Incognito), the album has that vibe to it. Maysa’s smoky vocals – deep and sensuous – are dynamic. Try cuts like ‘Mirrors’, ‘Compliments’ and the beautiful ‘Sunshine’. Lovers of the upbeat Incognito sound will appreciate the groove laden dancer ‘Hooked On Your Love’ and there is a soulful dance version of Gil Scott Heron’s ‘The Bottle’. Just about every track is superb, an absolute classic album that sounds even stronger today.
AL GREEN – LET’S STAY TOGETHER (Hi US) LP £20/ CD £9.95
The legendary Al Green returns to the UK for gigs this October and we have featured some of his finest albums in our monthly catalogue including ‘Lets Stay Together’. The title song is a masterpiece with its trademark Willie Mitchell production and Al’s pleading vocal. The song is probably his most famous and has been covered many times. Also check out ‘So You’re Leaving – a horn backed mid-tempo belter. ‘What Is This Feeling’, Eddie Floyd’s ‘I’ve Never Found A Girl’ and the definitive take on the Bee Gees ballad ‘How Can You Mend A Broken Heart’.
MAZE – GOLDEN TIME OF DAY CD £9.95
Maze’s second album is aptly titled as this is the super-group at their creative pinnacle (and my personal favourite Maze LP). From the single ‘Travellin Man’ that opens the set to ‘Working Together’ the vibe of the debut (‘Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly’) keeps a semi-funky groove. If you hear a more beautiful sentiment expressed than in the all-time classic ‘Golden time Of Day’ – please let me know, this is Frankie’s lyricism at its best. ‘I Need You’ is a 10 minute epic with its jazzy changes and wicked solos. It is a symphonic Maze at their best – fantastic. And then you have the voice that is Mr Beverly – he has a unique place in Soul’s history and in the hearts of many.
MAZE – LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS (CAPITOL UK) LP £15/ CD £13.95/ DVD £16.95
One of the best live Soul albums ever recorded, ‘Live In New Orleans’ captures the magic of a Maze concert. Back in the early 80’s, these guys carried all before them with the warmth, Soul and musical craft. Recorded in New Orleans in 1981, the original album had 8 live tracks and the CD for space reasons has 6 (excluding ‘You’ and ‘Happy Feelins’) plus the four studio cuts that formed side 4 of the double LP. Cuts like ‘Changin Times’, the anthem ‘Joy And Pain’ and ‘Southern Girl’ just epitomize the live MAZE experience. The studio cuts include 2 gems – the classic ‘Before I Let Go’ and ‘Running Away’. And according to reports on their recent London gig the boys still have it. The DVD has 3 bonus cuts plus the live versions of ‘You’ and ‘Happy Feelins’ that are not on the CD, but does not have ‘The Look In Your Eyes’ on it.
MAZE – JOY AND PAIN (CAPITOL UK LP) LP £12/CD £9.95
Their classic fourth album from 1980 is probably their most popular. Every track is a winner. ‘Changin’ Times’ is a strutting uptempo number, whereas ‘Southern Girl’ is a funky dedication to the girls of Texas. ‘The Look In Your Eyes’ is a heartfelt catchy mid-tempo love song. ‘Family’ and ‘Happiness’ are beautiful mellow dreamy ballads. It is however the all-time classic anthem ‘Joy And Pain’ – with lyrics inspired by a poem from 19th Century Lebanese philosopher Kahil Gibran that defines the album. Positive vibes permeate this delightful and infectious mid-tempo groover. And then there is Frankie’s mercurial vocals…
MAZE – WE ARE ONE LP £12/ CD £9.95
The studio follow-up to ‘Joy And Pain’ is another strong album that kick off we two absolute corkers. ‘Love Is The Key’ is a sing-along favourite of their gigs (or at least it was in the 80’s). ‘Right On Time’ is a typically infectious piece of Maze Soul with beautiful bass line and simple yet effective keyboard lines. ‘I Love You Too Much’ is a wonderful ‘Maze’ ballad’. This fine album is often overlooked which is a shame as this is probably the final Maze truly great album.
WHISPERS – FOR YOUR EARS ONLY CD £6.95
From about four years back, the vocal super group returned with this very fine album (their last). Their harmonies honed together over 40 or so years never sounded better (check ‘Love Strokin’). From the mid-tempo groove of ‘Get It On’ to the steppers cover of Major Harris’ ‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait’ the album is consistent. Ballads like ‘Don’t Say No’ and the 2 Step paced ‘Hold On’ are fine contemporary Soul songs. The mid-tempo ‘Diamonds’ is another gem as it the title song. This album is a master class vocal harmony singing.
MAZE – INSPIRATION (CAPITOL US LP) LP £15/CD £9.95
Sometimes this set gets overlooked in the Maze discography. Chronologically, between the superb ‘Golden time Of Day’ and the classic ‘Joy And Pain’, ‘Inspiration’ is an equally inspired set of soulful grooves. From the 2 step ‘Call On Me’ and the catchy hit ‘Feel That You’re Feelin’ to the infectious riff laden ‘Timin’ this album flows from start to finish. ‘welcome Home’ and ‘Woman Is A Wonder’ are typically ‘smooth’ slices of Soul. Also check ‘Ain’t That Strange’ with its relaxed feel and jazzy vibe gathers pace and possesses one of Frankie’s profound and meaningful lyrics.

ISAAC HAYES – JOY (ENTERPRISE LP) £15/ CD £9.95
From 1973, this superbly orchestrated and arranged album is arguably Ike at his creative peak. The funky Soul of ‘Joy’ in all its 16 minute glory is symphonic but with a funky groove. Add swirling strings and Hayes’ deep rich and soulful vocals and you have one of the Soul tracks of all-time. The seductive ‘I Love You That’s All’ and the dead slow ‘A Man Will Be A Man’ and ‘I’m Gonna Make It Without You’ are dead slow – none one does slow like Mr Hayes.
STEVE ARRINGTON – NOBODY CAN BE YOU BUT YOU (ATLANTIC US 12”) £20
Slave lead vocalist hit pay dirt with this (slavish) track. Wicked bass, coupled with a fine hook make this the perfect Boogie cut that is compulsive as it is timeless. This is possibly, Steve’s finest solo work. This track defined its epoch. Brilliant.
LATONYA LOCKETT – IN THE CITY CD £6.95
Big voiced Latonya featured on our Organic Soul 3 compilation a few years ago. 3 tracks from this album were included. ‘What The Hell Fo’ is a defiant piece of 00’s Soul, whilst the walking bassline and funky guitar lick underscore the superb ‘Just One Of Those Days’. ‘Neva Give Up On Love’ has a staccato semi New Beat vibe to it. The gritty Soul of ‘Round & Round’ and the gentle ‘Baby James’ hit the spot. Too. Listening to this CD in retrospect confirms just how under-rated this lady’s music is. Latonya’s lyrics are thoughtful and meaningful.

3 FROM THE VAULTS
ISAAC HAYES – HOT BUTTERED SOUL (ENTERPRISE LP) £15/ CD £9.95
Sadly another legendary figure in the world of Soul music left us just recently. Isaac’s contribution cannot be underestimated. Firstly as the songwriting duo (with David Porter) at Stax where he co-wrote classics like ‘Hold On I’m Comin’ and ‘Soul Man’. And with the score to ‘Shaft’ he re-defined the art of putting music to film. Hot Buttered Soul’ was released in 1969 to critical acclaim and changed the way Soul Music was recorded. Its orchestrated sound was the precursor to the great 70’s music of Norman Whitfield, Barry White and Leroy Hutson to name a few. The album contained only 4 tracks. A 12 minute version of Bacharach and David’s classic ‘Walk On By’ was eclipsed by the nearly 20 minutes of ‘By The time I Get To Phoenix’. The funkier ‘Hyperbolicsyllabicsequedalmystic’ has a more rhythmic feel.
EDDIE HENDERSON – HERITAGE (BLUE NOTE US LP) LP £20/CD £9.95
Eddie Henderson is one of the finest Jazz trumpeters of his generation. After recording two heavy duty Bitches Brew inspired albums for the Capricorn label (‘Inside Out’ and ‘Realisation’) whilst with Herbie Hancock, he moved to Blue Note where he recorded two further sets. ‘Heritage’ was the second of these and the Hancock/ Headhunters influence is strong. Indeed he uses the Hancock/ Headhunter’s rhythm section of Mick Clark and Paul Jackson, ‘Heritage’ has that funky edge that defined Herbie’s ground breaking group. Cuts like ‘Inside You’, ‘Acuphuncture’ and ‘Kudu’ are driven by Jackson growling bass. Henderson’s Miles like playing has an eerie and at times menacing quality to it. Patrice Rushen’s keyboards are outstanding. This album combines the depth of his Capricorn albums (e.g. cuts like ‘Dr Mganga’ and ‘Dark Shadows’) with the Jazz Funk of his Capitol years.
HERBIE HANCOCOK – I THOUGHT IT WAS YOU (CBS UK 12”) £15
Herbie’s first venture into Disco Jazz is a superb slice of danceable music. It features our man on vocoder for the vocals and various keyboards. This was a huge tune at the time and still remains popular. Copies on twelve are not that easy to locate.
MARCELL AND THE TRUTH - HOPES TOO HIGH CD £ 9.95
Only 3 years old or so, this superb album featured in our albums of 2006. In these troubles times (recession/ war etc), this CD will lift you and your spirits up -from the bootstraps! Marcell’s voice is rich and soulful and in the tradition of the likes of Frankie Beverly and Rance Allen. Yes he is that good. 'Never Leave You Lonely' is a great inspiring jerky dancer (with shades of Rance Allen Group), 'Hopes Too High' and 'Cold Rain' have a 2 step groove, whilst the string laden 'Breathe Love' (absolutely gorgeous) and 'Your Eyes' have a Maze Influence. 'Maybe I'm Not The Man' is a fantastic 2 Step ballad (a la In The Rain) and the slower 'Coming Home To You' builds into a great climax. 'Evil Woman' is a modern dancer (using the riff from ‘Valdez In The Country’) and the driving 'Sending Your Way' also standout. The finale is an infectious late 70s/ early 80s groove ‘It Ain’t Over’ with a guitar hook, catchy chorus and Marcell’s wonderful voice. But this is one of those rare CDs that you will not need to use the forward button on the remote.
DEBRA LAWS – VERY SPECIAL (ELEKTRA US LP) £20/ CD £12.95
Younger sister of Hubert, Ronnie (who both co-produced this album) and Eloise, this Elektra album from 1981 was Debra’s only album from back in the day. It is hard to understand why? ‘On My Own’ (an ironic title given the contribution of her brothers) was a popular early 80’s groove in London, whilst the gorgeous ‘Very Special was a top 20 R&B hit in the US. ‘Be Yourself’ and ‘Meant For You’ grew in popularity during the Rare Groove era. ‘How Long’ (Grey and Hanks penned) is a wicked 2 Step paced groove (notably recorded by Thelma Jones) and oft overlooked from this set. Her distinctive vocals suit the era’s sound.
CLEVELAND EATON – KEEP LOVE ALIVE (OVATION) LP £20
Bass player Cleveland Eaton cut his musical teeth with Ramsey Lewis in the early 70s. He recorded one in-demand set for the Black Jazz label (‘Plenty Good Eaton’) and hit pay dirt with the disco hit ‘Bama Wama Boogie’. From his ‘Instant Hip’ LP. ‘Keep Love Alive’ – sometimes overlooked – is a fine album that mixes Funk, Soul and Disco with Jazz inflections. Highlights include the Disco Funk (a la Brass Construction’s ‘Movin’) of ‘The Birmingham Train’, the Slave like ‘I Don’t Know’ and the Love Unlimited Orchestra sounding ‘Free At Last’ that kicks off in a Jazz direction half way through. Standout is the 2 Stepper ‘Flying High – a favourite with the shop crew here at Soul Brother.
JBs – ROCK GROOVE MACHINE (DRIVE US 12”) £15
This James Brown production from 1980 has (I think) a different band from the classic early 70’s line-up. The thumping Disco Funk has more of a Brass Construction feel to it, and is one compelling groove. By this time James has passed his creative peak, yet could still write and produce great dance tracks like this one.

THE ONE THAT ALMOST GOT AWAY
CONYA DOSS – A POEM ABOUT MS DOSS CD £12.95
Alongside Kindred’s first album, Antoinique’s brilliant set, Rebirth and Frank McComb’s ‘Truth’, this is my favourite album of the decade. It has that ‘organic (or neo)’ feel, based on 2 Step style grooves. ‘Good Good’ and ‘You Really Hurt Me’ are great mid-tempo tunes. .The cover of Norman Connors’ (You Are My) Starship is the strongest cover of the song, with Conya’s smoky sensual vocals hypnotize and entice ’Coffee’, ‘So Fly’ ‘One More Try’ and ‘Feelin You’ are equally strong cuts. This is the definitive CONYA DOSS album. (click here for all Conya Doss titles in stock)

3 FROM THE VAULTS
EARTH WIND AND FIRE – SPIRIT (COLUMBIA US LP) £12/ CD £9.95
Under-rated album from 1976, that whilst selling huge quantities at the time now tends to get overlooked. A shame really as it is a fine album. From the Funk of ‘Getaway’ and the instrumental ‘Biyo’ to the Discofied ‘Saturday Nite’, the album delivers tune after tune. Thoughtful lyrics on ‘Burnin Bush’, ‘Spirit’ and ‘Earth Wind and Fire’ show Maurice White and the boys in fine form. ‘On Your Face’ is a lovely tune and Philip Bailey and Maurice sing to perfection. And arrangements wise this is EWF at their best.
JOHNNY HAMMOND – GAMBLERS LIFE (SALVATION USLP) £20/ CD £12.95
A Mizell Brothers production, ‘Gamblers Life’ preceded the more famous ‘Gears’. Every bit as strong, this record was released on a subsidiary of CTI in 1975 and has an edgier feel. Cuts like ‘Rhodesian Thoroughfare’ and the much sampled ‘Gamblers Life’ and ‘Back To the Projects’ allow the Mizells to show off their crisp, funky sound. ‘Yesterday Was Cool’ is a driving Jazz Funk tune, whilst Starborne’ is a 70’s Donald Byrd like cut. On the jazzier tip check ‘Virgo Lady’. The rhythm section of Harvey Mason (drums) and Chuck Rainey (bass) are on fire and Melvin Wah Wah Watson (Ragin) is all over the album with his distinctive rhythm guitar.
ASHFORD AND SIMPSON – FOUND A CURE 12” £20
From 1979, this solid upbeat groove is a great dancer. Remixed by Jimmy Simpson, this tune underpins the fine lyrics and Valerie Simpson is in wonderful voice. And the hook is infectious. Great.
LYNN FIDDMONT - FLOW CD £6.95
This quality jazzy Soul set is easy on the ear and has a ‘summer’ feel to it. The aptly titled ‘Holiday’ and the breezy ‘Flow’ illustrate this perfectly. The mid-tempo ‘Something I Can Feel’ is a gentle floater and quite superb, ‘Say’ is similarly delicate, but with a jazzy twist. Lynn’s sensual lead vocal glides across the songs with a serenity that comes from her illustrious career as a backing vocalist (Carl Anderson, By All Means and many more). Listening to ‘Flow’ again has reminded me just how appropriate ‘The One That Got Away’ is!
.
3 FROM THE VAULTS
PHYLLIS HYMAN – LIVING ALL ALONE (PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL US LP £12 / CD £14.95
From 1986, Phyllis’ first album for Philadelphia International is often overlooked. Vocally, she is in fine fettle and the songs are very strong. The production sounds a tad dated, but the quality still shines through. Cuts like ‘First Time Together’ and ‘You Just Don’t Know’ reflect a very personal singing style, lyrics which seemed to tell her own story. The single ‘Ain’t You Had Enough Love’ is a real gem and her version of ‘What You Won’t Do For Love’ is a fine reworking of Bobby Caldwell’s classic. ‘Screaming At The Moon’ ups the tempo. This 9 track album is one of the finest in the Hyman discography.
JIMMY OWENS – JIMMY OWENS (HORIZON US) LP £20
A rare venture into Jazz Funk for the talented trumpeter, this 1976 album features two killer tunes. Firstly the ever popular Jazz Funk classic ‘Do It To It’ and the Fusion take on Duke Ellington’s ‘Caravan’. Owens’ playing is especially vibrant on the latter. The driving beat of ‘Do It To It’ kicks from the off added to which the catchy melody. ‘What’s The Use’ is slower and heavier. Try also the straight-ahead beauty of ‘Secret Love’. This self titled set was a truly outstanding example of Jazz Funk at its best.
TRUSSEL – LOVE INJUNCTION (ELEKTRA US) 12” £15
This Boogie/ Disco track is as catchy as they come. Co-produced by Fred Wesley, you can hear his input into the horns and arrangements with some of the nuances he picked up from George Clinton. The lead vocal, harmonies etc are propelled by a compelling drumbeat.
TABLE 4 5IVE - 2 HIP 2 B SMOOTH £6.95 (SPECIAL PRICE)
If you like your contemporary Jazz with a touch of Jazz Funk then this classy album will be for you. From the smooth and slinky Funk of 'Joyce's Juke Joint' to the Down To The Bone sounding 'Brooklyn Junction with its wicked bass line, solid handclapping beat and flute lead. Try also the slower '5 Spot' and the pulsating 'Blue Lounge'. This set slipped under the radar and for the life of me I can't think why!

3 FROM THE VAULTS
DAVID RUFFIN – DAVID RUFFIN (MOTOWN US LP) £20/ CD £18.95 (as a part of Complete Motown Albums Vol 1)
Ex- Temptation David Ruffin possesses one of the most soulful voice ever to grace our planet. This, his third album released contains so many gems and shows a maturing solo artist, who was capable of instilling his own magic and personality into any song. Take for example the covers of Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes’ Beautiful ballad ‘I Miss You’ or Luther Ingram’s angst fuelled ‘If Loving You IS Wrong..’ later re-worked by Millie Jackson and less soulfully by Rod Stewart. This album mixes the old school (modern) Soul of ‘The Rovin Kind’ and the funky ‘Blood Donors Needed’, juxtapositioning both with equal success and feeling. A man in his prime.
RONNIE LAWS - FEVER (Blue Note US LP) £12/ CD £9.95
The follow- up to Ronnie’s impressive debut ‘Pressure Sensitive’ (that featured ‘Always There’ and ‘Tidal Wave’) was even stronger. Produced by Wayne Henderson, the album features members of Pleasure on most of the album and Bobby Lyle and Wilton Felder on others. ‘Let’s Keep It Together’, ‘All The Time’ and ‘Captain Midnite’ are typically funky Fusion cuts that have that Crusaders vibe. It is however the mid-tempo tracks that really hit the bulls eye, especially the 2 Step paced cover of Margie Joseph’s ‘Stay Still’ and the original version of Bobby Lyle’s ‘Night Breeze’. ‘Karmen’ is another lilting mid-tempo gem. In my opinion, ‘Fever’ is Mr Laws’ finest piece of work.
COMMODORES – BRICK HOUSE (MOTOWN US 12”) £20
The extended 12” version is wonderful slick of Disco Funk – probably the band’s last classic Funk cut before Lionel Ritchie split from the band. This track still fills your dancefloors and is glorious in the politically incorrectness of the lyric.
CONYA DOSS A POEM ABOUT MS DOSS CD £12.95 2 cds for £25
One of the best 'Organic Soul' albums ever made, this 2002 album produced by Myron and Josh Hoginstock and Tony Nicholas put Conya on the map and is available again.
'Good Good' , 'Coffee' and 'Feelin You' are strong Organic dancers . 'One More Try' and 'All Because Of You' are great organic mid tempo tracks. 'So Fly' 'Meantime' and the duet 'Heaven' are beautiful hypnotic mid tempo tracks and 'Starship' is the best cover of Norman Connors classic that I've heard.
Conya has made some great tracks since but has never bettered this fantastic debut.
ANTIONIQUE INTRODUCING CD £14.95
This was one of the albums of 2003/4 and another of the greatest of the decade. This wonderfully warm album was Recorded in Philadelphia with strings from Larry Gold, Antoinique's unique sultry soulful vocals are fantastic throughout. 'Blackwater'and 'Phenomenon' are mid tempo dancers, 'Fell In love' a catch organic dancer and 'good Love' a catchy horn backed mid tempo. 'Someday' is an atmospheric mid tempo that takes you on a journey, 'Blue' a moody keyboard accompanied track that goes through many changes and 'Sunshine' an uplifting floater. Fabulous album.
N'DAMBI TUNING UP AND COSIGNIN CD £12.95 2 cds for £25
Incredible album from 2002 from former Erykah Badu backing singer that has to be one of the best jazzy soul albums of the decade. Recorded live in the studio with a full band in one take this album has an incredible energy and warmth that few albums recorded after the 70's can compare to. N'dambi's deep Texan tones are captivating throughout. 'Daydreamer' a funky soul dancer with great Clavinet, and the struttin 'Lonely Woman/Eva's song' have a strong Rufus influence. 'Call Me' is a soulful dancer that really swings. Some of the tracks like 'See You In my Dreams' , 'Whats Wrong With You', 'Soul From The Abyss' and 'Picture This' are jazzier recuts of tracks from her debut album that are taken to new heights with great musicianship. On 'Ode2Nina' a dramatic tribute to the high priestess Ndambi's voice has space to really stretch. A modern day masterpiece, a genre defining album.
KINDRED SURRENDER TO LOVE CD £9.95 BUY 3 GET ONE FREE
This fantastic 2003 album featuring husband and wife duo like a modern day Ashford And Simpson seamlessly combines old school influences and Y2K soul to best effect with hard hitting lyrics, great musicianship ,strings from Larry Gold (again) and great vocals. 'Surrender To Love' is a hard hitting funky soul groover, 'Rhythm Of Life' , 'Far Away' 'Stars', 'I Am' and 'We' (ft Ursula Rucker) are beautiful mid tempo grooves. 'Meant To Be' is slightly faster and 'Spread The Word' is a great funky soul dancer sampling War's River Niger', and 'Don't Wanna Suffer' is more hard hitting using Soul Searchers '1993'riffs . Wonderful album not to be missed.
REBIRTH THIS JOURNEY IN CD £14.95 DBL LP £17.95
L.A. based band (some member descendants of 70's band New Birth) created a unique funky soul sound for this energetic 2005 album, featuring great vocals and musicianship. In many ways their sound could be compared to the funkier end of Maze. 'This Journey In' is surely one of the best tracks of the decade with great textures that is extremely listenable and danceable. 'Straw Away', 'Shake It', and 'Everybody say yeah' and good funky soul dancers, 'Common Ends' is a catchy mid tempo whilst ''Got Your Madness', 'Mark Of His Ways' and and 'Sinkin' are atmospheric mid tempo tracks. 'Walk Talkin Mizell' is a semi instrumental tribute to the Mizell brothers'. Great album that sounds fresh each time you hear it.
FRANK MCCOMB THE TRUTH VOL 1 CD £13.95 LP £13.95 2 cds for £25
Frank has been one of the greatest singer/songwriter/keyboardists in our music over the past decade and has reached an iconic status like a modern day Donny Hathaway. This 2003 album produced by Steve' The Scotsman' Harvey at Malibu studios with an all star cast inc Bobby Watson (ex rufus) , EWF Horns, Billy Preston and Paulhino Da Costa etc is his masterpiece. 'Shine' is a breezy catchy dancer that is delightful, 'Whatcha Gonna Do' an upper mid tempo feel good groover ft Ledisi on BV's. The atmospheric 'Never Letting Go', mid tempo floater 'Cupid's Arrow' the slow acoustic piano accompanied 'When You Call My Name', the mid tempo 'Action Speaks Louder Than Words' and slinky 'Better Off Without You' highlight the Hathaway comparisons. Another of the best album's of the decade.
ANTHONY HAMILTON AIN'T NOBODY WORRRYING CD £13.95 2 cds for £25
Anthony has established himself as THE male soul singer of the decade, his deep rich southern soul voice is soul personified. This 2005/6 album is his finest to date, great lyrically strong songs backed by fantastic musicianship and sung by that Voice. 'Aint Nobody Worryin' (prod by Raphael Saadiq) and 'The Truth' are brilliant mid tempo tracks, 'Preachers Daughter' ft his wife Tarsha McMillian is dramatic and hard hitting, the gospel tinged mid tempo 'Pass Me Over' is beautiful, the ballads 'Never Love Again' and 'I Know What Love's All About' are really good and 'Sista Big Bones' is a southern funky soul dancer. But ever better is 'Change Your World' (prod by James Poyser) a fantastic Philly ballad with strings arranged by Larry Gold , another of the tracks of the decade. Unmissable.
TRACE ELLINGTON – LET LOVE IN CD £6.95 (SPECIAL PRICE UNTIL 31 AUGUST 2008 OR STOCKS RUN OUT)
If you like Soul mellow with a groove, then this set from a few years back should do the trick. Hints of Dwele at times, the album includes ‘Let Love In’ a version of which appeared on ‘This Is Soul 2005’. This version has more of a 70’s Hi Records feel to it. ‘Soul Real’ has an upbeat feel, whilst ‘Never Givin Up’ has a Modern Soul slant. Trace is vocally strong throughout and shines on ‘If I Were Your King’ – a midtempo Isleys tinged cut. Related to Duke Ellington, Trace continues the family tradition of making fine music. RUFUS FEAT CHAKA KHAN - RUFUSIZED (ABC US LP) £15/ CD £9.95
Rufus were one of the finest Soul/ Funk bands of the 70’s. Their sound reflected a vibrant mix of styles adds the young, sexy and vivaciousness of Chaka Khan and you have a surefire winning formula. It was ‘Rufusized’ that really put Chaka Khan on the map. Rufus had their own distinctive funky soul sound with Chaka's incredible vocals backed by Tony Maiden and Bobby Watson, and this was their classic album. 'Once You Get Started' is a storming uptempo number. The riff laden mid tempo 'Somebody's Watching You', 'Please Pardon Me' - a great melodic string laden horn backed mid tempo and the classic mid-tempo 'Stop On By' - their hit cover of Womack's song are the standouts. 'Pack'd My Bags' is a fairly slow melodic mid tempo track that builds was covered on Chaka's recent album, 'Your Smile' a melancholy ballad, 'Rufusized' a clavinet led semi instrumental and 'I'm A Woman (I'm a Backbone)' funky soul showing Chaka's gritty vocals are also strong tracks that complete this incredible album.
JIMMY McGRIFF – RED BEANS (Groove Merchant US LP) £20/ CD £11.95
Jimmy McGriff recently passed away due to the side effects of Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 72. He left a rich musical heritage as one of the most popular Hammond organists. His 70’s material recorded for Groove Merchant has been sadly overlooked. ‘Red Beans’ from 1976 is a case in point; the orchestrated Jazz Funk sound of the label is perfectly illustrated by tracks like ‘Red Beans’ and ‘Big Booty Bounce’. ‘Cakes Alive’ is a wickedly funky tune with Mike Brecker adding a superb tenor sax solo. ‘Sweet Love’ is a great modern-ish sounding Soul track. This set will appeal to Jazz Funk lovers.
STARGARD – WHICH WAY IS UP (MCA US 12”) £15
This classic dance track has all the hallmarks of a Rose Royce Norman Whitfield production, though he did write the song. Whitfield sidekick, Mark Davis produced and arranged what was Stargard’s first release. Taken at breakneck pace the cut is propelled by the firing rhythm section and topped by the sassy vocal trio. .
CHAVOUS – WITHOUT LIMIT CD £14.95
This Sassy sounding lady featured on our ‘This Is Soul 2006’. Chavous is fresh sounding, and this great album from Philly, who will be compared to Jill Scott. ‘Without Limit’ is a great soulful/R&B dancer, ‘Much Better’ a really nice upper mid tempo foot taper, ‘Iyei’ a funky chugger, and ‘Gone’ a mid tempo floater’. Also check the mid tempo duet with Chris Thompson ‘My World’, the mid tempo groover ‘Thank U’ and the partially spoken word ‘Mother’. Love the Latin tinged version of ‘Healin’ with its walking bass line, Wispish vocal and lush feel. One for the future.

ANITA BAKER – SONGSTRESS (BEVERLY GLEN US) LP £12/ CD £9.95
Anita's great debut from 1983 produced by Patrick Moten and Otis Smith for the short lived but revered Beverley Glen label. Anita was to achieve commercial success with her Elektra material most notably 'Rapture' and to become arguably the top female soul singer from the mid 80's to early 90's by keeping classic soul values at a time when it was out of vogue. It was this album that brought her to the attention of soul fans with her great vocal range and sultry voice. The ballad 'Angel' still rates amongst her best songs and performances, a classic. 'You’re The Best Thing Yet’, 'No More Tears' and 'Sometimes' are also good ballads. The horn backed 'Feel The Need' and 'Will You Be Mine' are great 2 steppers. These two plus the slightly faster 'Do You Believe In Me' are also highlights. Classic Soul from the 80's.
BLACKBYRDS – BLACKBYRDS (FANTASY US) LP £20/ CD £13.95 (WITH FLYING START)
Released in 1974, this debut has to be one of the finest debuts on record. Donald Byrd’s protégés and pupils create the kind of tight cohesive groove that only Funk can. From the street Funk (a la Fatback Band) of ‘Do It Fluid’ to the fast incessant guitar/ bass led ‘Gut Level’, the Blackbyrds deliver. The guys seemed to be able to encapture a mood with their riffs, melodies and grooves. – take the beautiful ‘Summer Love’, ‘A Hot Day Today’ or the bass driven ‘Lifestyles’ featuring Oscar Brashear. Also try the jazzier ‘Reggins’, but this set is strong throughout.
GEORGE BENSON – BREEZIN (WARNER BROTHERS US) LP £12/ CD £9.95
This 1976 album became the first jazz album to go Platinum, was a two time Grammy winner and topped Jazz, R&B and Pop charts. Brilliantly produced by Tommy Lipuma with orchestra arranged by Claus Ogerman and features an all star cast Ronnie Foster, Phil Upchurch, Jorge Dalto, Stanley Banks, Ralph MacDonald and Harvey Mason. Five of the six tracks are delightful laid back instrumentals highlighting Benson's guitar playing. 'Breezin' a cover of a Womack song, the mid tempo 'Affirmation', the heavily orchestrated 'So This Is Love' and 'Lady' slightly faster 'Six To Four' with a driving beat. The vocal cut 'This Masquerade' shows off Benson as a fine soulful singer and is a truly great track. Classic album an ideal backdrop to a summer's day.
GEORGE DUKE – BRAZILIAN LOVE AFFAIR (EPIC UK) 12” £15
Amazingly this track was not on the original Brazilian release of the album, but was added for US and European release. It more mainstream Jazz Funk feel contrasts with the more traditional Brazilian feel of the other tracks. Byron Miller’s bass and Airto’s tremendous percussion give you a taste of Rio, sunshine and good times on this uplifting opus.
GAP BAND - OUTSTANDING (TOTAL EXPERIENCE US) 12” £15
The much sought after 12” mix of this 1982 tune combines that heavy early 80’s groove with a 2 Step paced tempo that gets head nodding and feet moving. From Gap Band IV it is this 12” version that is the business.
GWEN MCCRAE – KEEP THE FIRE BURNING (ATLANTIC US) 12” £30
This driving slice of Funk Soul has long been popular with the UK Soul crowd. The incessant bassline, Gwen’s powerful vocal and the Willie Hutch production give this track its full-on vibe
DONNA SUMMER – LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (CASABLANCA US) 12” £15
In this day and age, it is hard to imagine how much controversy this track created back in 1975. Banned by the BBC for the moan and groans and the sensual vocal of Ms Summer, this classic Euro Disco record became a hit partly (possibly mainly) because of its notoriety. Even so the orchestrations (courtesy of Giorgio Moroder) and overall ‘feel’ of the music engendered a style that defined the Disco era.
ANTOINIQUE – INTRODUCING CD £15.95
One of the strongest albums released in the past few years. Call it ‘organic’, ‘neo’ or just SOUL, this outstanding album from 2003, emphasizes the depth of Soul talent around in the 21st Century. Antoinique’s sassy style is highlighted on the mid-tempo and funky ‘Blue’. ‘Fell In Love’ is a superb groove and featured on our ‘This Is Soul 2005’ compilation. ‘Good Love’, ‘Sweeter’ and the Modern soul crowd’s favourite ‘Sunshine’ are all fine songs with flowing bass lines, strong, largely real instrumentation and quality production and arrangements. The album was recorded in Philadelphia at Larry Gold studios and that quality shines through. This is most definitely one of the albums of the 00s.

CURTIS MAYFIELD – SUPERFLY (CURTOM US) LP £15/ CD £9.95
Probably the best blaxploitation soundtrack ever recorded, and one of Curtis finest albums. His distinctive production creates one of Soul music's iconic albums, whose influence on our music shouldn’t be under estimated. Curtis wistful vocals, his lyrics, Johnny Pate's arrangements and orchestration created a gold album that even topped the US pop charts for a month in 1972/3. 'Superfly', 'Freddies Dead', 'Little Child Running Wild', 'Pusherman' and 'No Thing On Me' are all great anti drug use songs with great grooves. 'Give me Your Love' is a classic love song that was covered by Barbara Mason and Sisters Love, but Curtis version is outstanding with a great funky soul backing. The instrumental 'Junkie Chase' is classic blaxploitation theme with wah wah guitars and lots of brass that works as well as a track as a movie backdrop. Absolute classic Soul music, which would stand as a great album even without the movie!
PARLIAMENT – MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION (CASABLANCA US) LP £15/ CD £9.95
This 1975/6 album founded and gave the P-Funk genre its name, featuring George Clinton, Bootsy and co at their most creative (and spaced out). Supported by Bernie Worrell on surreal keyboards, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Michael and Randy Brecker and Joe Farrell on horny horns, Bootsy's striding bass with background vocals by soulsters inc Taka Khan (Boom), Debra Wright and Sidney Barnes, the sound was unprecedented and fantastic. The album not only appealed to Clinton's underground audience, but right across the board and was a massive Soul and Pop Chart hit, and founded a new movement. 'P-Funk' with its spoken commentary and rousing chorus immediately differentiated it from anything that had come before, 'Mothership Connection (Starchild)' still kicks today with some great riffs and melodies and 'Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)' the albums most conventional groove even became a US top 15 pop hit. 'Unfunky UFO', 'Handcuffs' and ‘Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication' keep the Funk groove going. One of THE classic funk albums (alongside ‘Payback’) of all time!

DONALD BYRD – PLACES AND SPACES (BLUE NOTE US) LP £40/ CD £9.95
The Mizell brothers produced some great Jazz Funk albums in the early to mid 70's and were most associated with Donald Byrd and this classic 1975 album in particular. Their joyful heavily lushly orchestrated backing tracks framed the lead instrument to create a total sound. Trumpeter Donald had recorded many great albums for Blue Note in the previous 10 years this one was probably his most accessible. The supporting cast of musicians including Harvey Mason, Chuck Rainey, Skip Scarborough and King Erricson play to perfection. The uptempo 'Change' sets the tone, the beautiful mid tempo 'Wind Parade’, 'Dominoes' and 'Places and Spaces’ are all time classics. The upper mid tempo 'You And Music' , the more gentle 'Night Whistler' and the great cover of 'Just My Imagination' complement them to make this one of the best jazz funk albums of all time, that still sounds fresh each time you hear it. Essential.
ARNIE’S LOVE – I’M OUT OF YOUR LIFE (STREETWAVE UK) 12” £15
One of the most played tracks from the 80’s, this cut enjoys endless popularity and it is easy to hear why. Catchy hook line, nice dance beat and an uncomplicated style makes this track a real winner, even with non-Soul fans.
HUDSON PEOPLE – TRIP TO YOUR MIND (HITHOUSE UK) 12” £70
This original version is slightly different from the version that was released on Ensign. ‘Trip To Your Mind’ has a pounding (UK) Jazz Funk groove with horns and epitomises that sound from the late 70’s. A really long instrumental break drives the piece. Brilliant.
KOOL AND THE GANG – LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING/ OPEN SESAME (DELITE US) 12” £15
‘Love And Understanding’ was a universal message that the Gang represented during their successful ‘Funk’ era. It was probably the last track they recorded in that style. Flip it for the softer, more Disco tinged sound of ‘Open Sesame’ which featured in ‘Saturday Night Fever’.
YOUNG AND CO – I LIKE WHAT YOU’RE DOING (BRUNSWICK US) 12” £20
Another catchy number from the era of Boogie, this stomping dancer (from 1980) is as accessible as our music gets. Again it is the catchiness of the hook line gets you ‘hooked’, but this is a fine, fine dancer.
(STEPHANIE) McKAY – MCKAY CD £9.95
Stephanie has a new album ‘Tell It Like it Is’ (taking pre-orders now) out at the end of July , so thought it might be to re-visit her first album. This eclectic set has a contemporary (future Soul) feel that sounds fresh now. The Hip Hop tinged Soul of ‘Bluesin It’ and the funky ‘Thinking Of You’ – check the b line/ drums - are standouts. The downbeat and eerie ‘Five Days Of Faith’ adds another dimension. The (bonus) cut ‘Folksong’ is a mid-tempo gem. Stephanie’s lyrics show a deep insight into the human condition and whilst the quirkiness (in places) of the album may deter some, the depth and varied nature of the music will suit others.

BLACK ICE – I JUDGE THE FUNK LP £40
This album is much sought after, mainly for two incredible 2 Step tracks, the Rare Groove gem ‘Postcard Love Affair’ and ‘Always On My Mind’ which is simply beautiful and has one of the finest falsetto leads I have ever heard. Try also the mid-tempo funky groover ‘Push’ and the ballad ‘Fantasize’. There are two Disco Soul uptempo quality grooves in ‘My Fantasy’ and ‘There You Go’, but the strongest dance cut is the title song.
BERNARD WRIGHT – NARD ARISTA GRP US LP £20/ CD £19.95
Arguably a Jazz Funk rather than Funk album, ‘Nard’ was Wright’s debut and the man was only 16. His playing showed much greater maturity. Backed by the up and coming Jamaica Queens crew that included Don Blackman, Marcus Miller et al, the quality of this album would befit a veteran let alone a rooky. In retrospect the P Funk-ish ‘Haboglabotribin’ (due to sampling) created a demand for the album. It is very much on the Don Blackman LP style but is not the best track. On the Jazz Funk tip, check the blistering ‘Firebolt Hustle’ and the incessant groove of ‘Bread Sandwiches’. ‘Master Rocker’, ‘Spinnin’ and ‘We’re Just The Band’ add FUNK. On ‘Solar’, Wright shows his Jazz chops.
WALTER BISHOP – SOUL VILLAGE MUSE LP £20
Veteran pianist who cut his teeth with Charlie Parker recorded one Fusion date for Muse Records. ‘Soul Village’ remains one of the best Jazz Funk albums from the late 70’s. Many of the cuts were re-workings of tracks Bishop had recorded for other labels like Black Jazz, but the versions of ‘Soul Village’ and ‘Soul Turnaround on this album are definitive Jazz Funk cuts that whilst accessible (and commercial) retain an essential jazziness. ‘Coral Keys’ and ‘Sweet Rosa’ are atmospheric pieces. The band includes Randy Brecker and Steve Khan. ‘Soul Village’ is one of THE Fusion albums of all-time.
ACTIVE FORCE – GIVE ME YOUR LOVE (A&M UK) 12” £20
This ever popular Boogie/ Rare Groove tune is as infectious as our music gets and the catchy chorus will surely get you hooked. Released in 1983, it typifies the early stripped down sound that developed during the 80’s. Sadly Active Force recorded just one album and faded into obscurity until the UK Soul scene of the late 80’s revived interest in this tune.
Also available on Groove On Down Vol 2 CD/ Double LP
INTRIGUE – FLY GIRL (WORLD TRADE US) 12” £20
Written by Leroy Burgess and Sonny Davenport and co-produced by Leroy, Fred McFarlane and Allen George. From 1984, this dance classic defines the Burgess sound with its synth bass, upbeat feel and soulful vocal. This is one of the 80’s greatest tunes – no doubt.
MANDRILL – FUNKY MONKEY/ CAN YOU GET IT (ARISTA UK) 12” £10
Two great Disco Funk tracks graced the ‘We Are One’ album. These breakneck tracks will get feet moving and floors full. From 1979, they are typical of their era and represent a more accessible, less full-on than Mandrill’s Polydor work. Nonetheless both cuts are awesome.
SONNY ROLLINS – HARLEM BOYS (MILESTONE UK) 12” £12
One of Sonny’s very few excursions into Fusion, ‘Harlem Boys’ is one of those cuts that stays in the consciousness. Rollins’ rich jazzy tenor works over the clip clop rhythm and simple and happy melody.
AMAR KHALIL – WHERE THERE’S A WILL CD £9.95
Lead singer with Toni Tony Tone released this Gospel and Gospel inspired album in 2005. The quality of the production vocals and material will also appeal to Soul fans. Jamie Hawkins produced the album and the whole project has a positive feel and exudes a refreshing optimism.
Featuring mainly mid tempo staccato dancers like 'Higher', 'Thank You', 'I See You', 'Solitary' and the standout 'Sunny Day' one of the best tracks of the year so far. This cut floats like a cool breeze and Amar’s vocal flows also check the slower 'Quickly'. Amar's soulful voice dominates throughout this excellent set. Musically fans of Toni Tony Tone or Raphael Saadiq will appreciate this album or lovers of good music for that matter.

GIL SCOTT HERON –PIECES OF A MAN FLYING DUTCHMAN US LP £50
Gil Scott Heron is a legendary figure on the black music scene. His lyrics, poetry, political insight and music have inspired many for the last 35 – 40 years. This was Gil’s first collaboration with Brian Jackson recorded in 1971 and features an all star line up including Ron Carter, Bernard Purdie, Hubert Laws and Johnny Pate. They provide the perfect backing on this seminal album. ‘Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ and ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is’ are acknowledged classics. The beautiful ‘Save The Children’ and ‘I’ll Think I’ll Call It Morning’ have great melodies and reflective themes. The more uptempo ‘Lady Day And John Coltrane’ and ‘When You Are Who You Are’ have shuffling rhythms and the down tempo ‘Pieces Of A Man’, ‘Sign Of The Ages’ and ‘The Prisoner’ are compelling. The Lyrics are thought provoking, Gil’s story telling voice powerful yet vulnerable, the music outstanding. This is an album you really need to listen to. Classic.
Also highly recommended ‘Messages- Anthology’ CD £13.95 DBL LP £14.95
OHIO PLAYERS – HONEY MERCURY US LP £15
When the album was released in late 1975, the Ohio Players had established themselves as premier league funksters. A string of heavy sets for Westbound were followed by two hugely successful sets for Mercury (‘Skin Tight’ and ‘Fire’). Honey featured the obligatory naked woman on the cover and the music oozed Funk. Cuts like ‘Love Rollercoaster’ and ‘Fopp’ defined their sound with off-key vocals backed by a tight horn section, wicked guitar licks and grooves to make you move. Killer tune is still the jazzy mid-tempo ‘Sweet Sticky Thing’ with guitar and sax lead; this mid-tempo gem just simmers and glides gracefully during its 6 minute duration. Awesome stuff.
GARY BARTZ – I’VE KNOW RIVERS MILESTONE DOUBLE LP £50
Gary Bartz is one of the world’s most renowned alto sax players, who cut his teeth with the likes of Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders and Art Blakey. He recorded a series of fine ‘Spiritual’ Jazz Fusion albums in the early to mid 70’s including this live session recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The standout is ‘I’ve Known Rivers with its semi spoken poetry/ sung lyric intro, before its theme takes you on a musical journey. ‘Jujuman’ adds hints of Coltrane to the music as does the heavy ‘Sia Zote’. ‘Dr Follows Dance’ is another joyous epic. The double album remains one of the finest recorded at Montreux and that is a testament in itself.

RICHARD EVANS – BURNING SPEAR (A&M UK) £15
This Jazz funk classic is a re-working of Richard’s late 60’s track also recorded by Jimmy Smith, SOUL and the Soulful Strings. It is however the 1979 version that is popular in the clubs with its funky walking bass line and superb horn and rhythm arrangements. The track features Linda Williams on piano.
INDEEP – LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE (SOUND OF NEW YORK US 12”) £15
This slice of Boogie heaven hails from 1982 and the New York underground dance scene. The infectiousness of the chorus and its simple lyric has always been popular with dancers and not surprisingly DJs. Mixed by Tony Humphries the tune is almost the ultimate party record.
SUN – RADIATION LEVEL (CAPITOL US) £15
This slice of Disco Funk was very popular in the late 70’s, but has faded somewhat into obscurity. Typical of its era and dipping into the well of outer of space post star wars inspiration, the track is just the same one hell of dance track. Sun recorded several fine albums and with their full horn section and tight rhythm section were one of the hottest Funk bands around in the late 70’s.
WHISPERS – AND THE BEAT GOES ON (SOLAR US) £15
When the long established harmony group the Whispers teamed up with Dick Griffey at Solar, it was a musical marriage made in heaven. Solar became renowned for simple catchy Soul tunes that we get you humming or singing the chorus and fill dancefloors all over the Soul world. No track characterises the label’s sound more than the ridiculously infectious ‘And The Beat Goes On’ and still does.
YADA YADA – FINGALIKKIN GOOD CD £9.95
Yada Yada recorded three strong albums in the mid/ late 90’s. The brainchild of DJ Chris Bangs and Mick Talbot (keys), the band included two horn players Andrew Ross (saxes/ flute) and Dave Priseman (trumpet). ‘Fingalikkin Good’ is probably the most consistent and will appeal to fans of Down To The Bone (especially their earlier albums). If you like Fusion with a groove then ‘Floot Juice’ and ‘Southern Fried’ hit the spot. ‘Summer Strut’ takes a more breezy (almost Blackbyrds-ish) route and ‘Won’t U Come Back 2 Me’ adds a soulful spin. This is one of the forgotten gems of the 90’s Jazz Funk sound that spawned DTTB, Groove Collective et al.

LEON WARE –MUSICAL MASSAGE Motown UK £20 (OUT OF STOCK)/ CD £12.95
Leon Ware is prestigious (co) songwriter (‘I Want You’, ‘Bodyheat’, ‘Why I Came To California’ etc). ‘Musical Massage’ is a masterpiece recorded in 1976 for Motown and probably his best. Recorded just after he wrote and produced Marvin’s ‘I Want You’ album. This is in a similar style, and was over shadowed commercially at the time by Marvin’s classic, but if anything is actually a better all round album. The sensual mood of the album is epitomized by the heavily orchestrated mid tempo ‘Learning How To Love You’, ‘Instant Love’ (feat Minnie Riperton) ‘Body Heat’ (Leon co-wrote and sang on Quincy’s original a year earlier) , ‘Journey Into You’ , and the slower ‘Holiday’ (ft Marvin and Womack) , ‘Phantom Lover’, ‘Musical Massage’ and ‘Turn Out The Light’. Amongst the five unreleased bonus tracks on the CD are the outstanding ‘Comfort (Come live With Me Angel) (ft Minnie), and ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ which Marvin featured on his album.
LONNIE LISTON SMITH –EXPANSIONS FLYING DUTCHMAN LP £20/ CD £9.95
This magical album recorded in 1975 has to be one of all time great Jazz Funk albums. Lonnie successfully combined electric instruments on the jazz funk tracks with acoustic ones on the jazzier tracks. The all time classic ‘Expansions’ defines the genre, built around Cecil McBee’s incredible B line, a shuffling rhythm, Lonnie’s keyboard textures and brother Donald’s sublime vocals and flute playing making one of the most instantly recognizable jazz funk tracks. ‘Voodoo Woman’ and the mystical ‘Shadows’ paint pictures in the mind and are a journey of discovery. The more acoustic tracks like ‘Desert Nights’ , the shuffling ‘Summer Days’ and the beautiful ‘My Love’ are delightful and the version of Doug Carn’s ‘Peace’ as relevant in today’s world as it was in the early 70’s. The four man percussion section keeps the rhythms flowing and is inspired throughout and Dave Hubbard’s sax and flute enhances the overall feel. An Absolute classic that still sounds fresh 33 years on.
MANU DIBANGO – SOUL MAKOSSA ATLANTIC US LP £30
Last week we featured Afrique’s cover of ‘Soul Makossa’, here is the original. The album also contains grooves like the popular ‘New Bell’. This is a strong Afro Funk set with Jazz tinges. The rhythm section comes alive on cuts like ‘Oboso’, ‘Dangwa’ and the subtle percussive ‘Nights In Zeralda’. In fact this is quality throughout. The influx of African musicians into Afro-American and UK/European based bands adds a distinctive flavour to the Funk.

GARY BYRD EXPERIENCE – THE CROWN MOTOWN UK 12” £15
Produced by Stevie Wonder, this early Hip Hop/ Rap track (1983) is very much in the tradition of early Sugarhill Gang/ King Tim III. The almost spoken rap is complimented by female vocals. Tracks like ‘The Crown’ were uplifting and the precursor to what followed.
INSTANT FUNK – GOT MY MIND MADE UP SALSOUL UK 12” £15
Almost the ultimate ‘feel good’ track, this elongated percussive slice of Disco Funk possesses one of the catchiest hooks in our music. Instant Funk started as Bunny Sigler’s backing ground, then first on TSOP and more successfully on Salsoul recorded a succession of dance classics of which this is the best. The percussion breakdown on the 10 min remix is awesome.
PRINCE - I WANNA BE YOUR LOVER WARNER BROTHERS UK 12” £25
Before Prince hits the headlines as the pop/rock/ soul superstar in the 80’s, he recorded more soulful tracks like this long funky Disco tune. The groove is relentless and very unlike his later material. Apparently Prince played most if not all of the instruments on the track, showing us just what a major talent he was (and still is).
ZAPP – MORE BOUNCE TO THE OUNCE WARNER BROTHERS UK 12” £20
Their debut single produced by Roger (Troutman) and Bootsy has that P Funk tinge. The use of the vocoder on the chorus adds a high degree of infectiousness, and together with the heavy synth bass makes this tune an absolute Funk classic

GABBIE McGEE – CERTIFIED SOUL CD £9.95
Gabbie McGee is a former Miss Black Atlanta and hails from the Mississippi heartland. Her voice and music reflect that rich heritage. Echoes of Jill Scott or India Arie, and lovers of Antoinique’s album would also appreciate ‘Certified Soul’. The instrumentation is sparser however and there is an independent feel to the entire album. This varied set from Gabbie has a jazzy tinge that is who has a strong voice and sounds similar to Antonique in places. 'Now I Know' is an organic mid tempo groover, whilst 'Something So' a catchy foot tapper with a nice hook. The breezy radio friendly 'Sunshine and Colors' is another highlight, and 'Diva By Design' is spoken word over percussion.

AL GREEN STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU (HI US) LP £15/ CD £9.95
Given the Al Green revival that his current album ‘Lay It On Me’ is enjoying, it seems appropriate to take a re-look at Al’s halcyon days. This Classic 1972 album was produced by Willie Mitchell and Al. By this time, Al was one of Soul music’s biggest stars and had crossed over to a worldwide audience, with his understated silky soulful vocals. The strong rhythm section featured Booke T drummer Al Jackson superbly marshaled by Mitchell to create that highly distinctive ‘Hi’/ Memphis sound. The mid tempo ‘I’m Still in Love With You’ was a no1 R&B hit. ‘Look What You Done For Me’ with its punchy horn riffs was another big hit. However the most memorable track the classic ‘Love And Happiness’ was held back for several years , but is a magnificent upper mid tempo belter with great Organ and Horn Riffs and Al at his best vocally. The really slow ballads ‘Simply Beautiful’, ‘For The Good Times’, ‘One Of Those Good Old Days’ and the haunting mid tempo ‘I’m Glad Your Mine’ are also great. This Is Al at the pinnacle of his career..
AFRIQUE – SOUL MAKOSSA MAINSTREAM US LP £30/ JAPANESE CD £19.95
Afrique was a group of some of the finest session musicians from the 70’s including Chuck Rainey, David T Walker Paul Humphrey and Charles Kynard. These musicians provided the Mainstream label with its rhythm and horn sections for many of its releases. They recorded one of many (and one of the strongest) covers of Manu Dibango’s ‘Soul Makossa’ that gives the album its title. Try also the funky cover of Bill Withers’ ‘Kissing My Love’ and the single ‘Hot Mud’. This instrumental album has long been in-demand especially with lovers of breaks
GROVER WASHINGTON JR – LIVE AT THE BIJOU KUDU US DOUBLE LP £15/CD £13.95
This was the last recording for Creed Taylor’s Kudu imprint – the label which propelled Grover to superstardom. Grover had released a series of brilliant Jazz Funk albums (especially ‘Mister Magic’ and ‘Feels So Good’). His band, Locksmith was tight and together and Grover ‘live’ combined his tuneful sax playing with improvisation and ferocity at times that is breathtaking. ‘Bijou’ includes 2 cracking Jazz Fusion classics ‘Sausalito’ and ‘Summer Song’. Cuts like ‘On The Cusp’, ’Lock It In The Pocket’ the jazzy ‘You Make Me Dance’ and ‘Juffure’ reflect a legend at the top of his game. There is also a 20 min version of ‘Mr Magic’. This one of the best ‘live’ sets’ ever and a must for Grover and Jazz Funk fans alike.
D’ANGELO – BROWN SUGAR EMI US 12” £20
The impact of this song when it was released in 1995 can scarcely be overstated. That languid feel and D’Angelo’s vocal gliding over a mid-tempo bubbling beat was so different from everything else around (especially in the US) at the time. Swiftly followed by Erykah, Adrianna Evans etc, the track heralded a resurgence of Soul music that became classified as ‘neo’ Soul, but was really just quality Soul.
THELMA HOUSTON – SATURDAY NIGHT SUNDAY MORNING MOTOWN US 12” £20
This superb slice of late 70’s Disco is one of Thelma’s finest moments on Motown. Her powerful vocals stretch out over a track that starts at mid/up tempo then revs up. Hints of classic Philly (Harold Melvin/ Teddy Pendergrass) about the groove and this is an essential track for any retro Soul club.

WAR – WORLD IS A GHETTO (INSTRUMENTAL) MCA UK 12” £15
War recorded their classic 1972 track as an instrumental Jazz Funk cut. This track was especially popular in London after its release in 1979. KINDRED – SURRENDER TO LOVE CD £9.95
Not so much the one that got away, but the one that should have sold better. Husband and wife duo, often compared to Womack and Womack or Ashford and Simpson sing and write Soul that is both contemporary and relevant yet in the tradition of the music’s great history. The lyrics reflect a deep love of the music and of each other. (Their interaction (on stage) reflects that love – one of the best live performances I have seen). Cuts like the ‘Rhythm Of Life’, the beautiful ‘We’ and ‘Meant To Be’ are sublime. ‘Spread The Love’, sampling War’s ‘River Niger’ is a funky tune that improves on the sample. Every track is strong. Fatin’s vocals echo the great ‘deep’ male Soul singers of yesteryear, and Aja compliments him to perfection. ‘Surrender To Love’ is in my opinion one of the top 3 or 4 albums of the modern era and one of the few that would make my Soul top 20 of all-time. Literally essential, it is that strong

JERRY BUTLER – NOTHING SAYS I LOVE YOU LIKE I LOVE YOU (PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL US) LP £15/ CD £9.95
Jerry Butler had enjoyed success in the late 60’s with Gamble and Huff. After a short stint at Motown he reunited with the legends for two albums on their Philadelphia International label. ‘Nothing Says…..’ from 1978 is the strongest and includes the typically Philly jauntiness of ‘Cooling Out’. In similar style is the breezing ‘Mighty Good People’. Jerry’s wonderfully expressive voice conveys Soul and creates a mood especially on tracks like the subtle 2 step of ‘Sad Eyes’ and the superb ballad title cut. His easy crooning vocal style compliments the Philly production of Gamble and Huff into the perfect musical marriage.
EDDIE HAZEL – GAME DAMES AND GUITAR THANGS (WARNER BROTHERS US) LP £50/ CD £13.95
Eddie Hazel, Funkadelic/ Parliament guitarist combined the Rock guitar of Jimi Hendrix with the Clinton/ Bootsy inspired psychedelic Funk. His contribution to the P Funk sound is undoubted but sporadic due to health problems. ‘Game Dames..’ is one of the most sought after P Funk albums. Recorded in 1977, the album reflects the late 70’s Clinton sound on cuts like ‘Frantic Moment’ and a wicked and unique spin on ‘California Dreaming’. ‘Physical Love’ (also recorded by Bootsy for the ‘Stretchin Out’ LP) is given a funkier instrumental treatment. ‘What About It’ is the funkiest groove on the set and like this rest of the album the setting for Hazel’s guitar.
RAMSEY LEWIS – SUN GODDESS (COLUMBIA US) LP £15/ CD £9.95
Earth Wind and Fire and ex Lewis sideman Maurice White contribute on 2 tracks. ‘Sun Goddess’ sounds like a EWF cut with Ramsey soloing over the lazy, relaxed groove. They also play on the bluesy ‘Hot Dawgit’. ‘Jungle Strut’ and ‘Tambura’ are Jazz Funk grooves that reflect Ramsey’s style at the time – a small ensemble that includes the outstanding bass playing of Cleveland Eaton. Strings arranged by Richard Evans add a lush backdrop that works especially on the jazzier ‘Gemini Rising’ that adds an edgier vibe.
DONNA MCGHEE – MR BLINDMAN (ANCHOR UK) 12” £60
This Greg Carmichael is much sought after. Originally the B Side this infectious groove increased its popularity in the late 80’s and has retained that status ever since. Strings, nagging guitar riff and solid bass line underpin Donna’s almost lazy vocal.
HEAVEN AND EARTH – I REALLY LOVE YOU (WMOT US) 12” £25
Classic early 80’s Philly style dancer that is so catchy. Lead vocal and chorus that hooks whilst swirling strings and full-on beat are matched by subdued horns and sleek guitar riffs. The break is delightful
JONES GIRLS – NIGHTS OVER EGYPT (PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL UK) 12” £15
One of the Jones Girls finest pieces of work with Dexter Wansel and Cynthia Biggs song, arrangements and production embracing you in the warmth of Egypt.. So much so you can taste the night breeze and the sand! One of the greatest Soul cuts of all-time.
LOU RAWLS – LET ME BE GOOD TO YOU (PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL US) 12” £15
More Philly magic, this mid-tempo groover is archetypal Gamble Huff. Lou’s sweet vocal – compared to a black Frank Sinatra – serenades like no one else can. Sadly no longer with us, this is Mr Rawls at his finest.
MIKE AVERY – DESTINATION LOVE CD £9.95 If this high quality album is any indication, Mike Avery is a romantic at heart. His vocals – much in the mould of Ty Causey or the mellower side of Jeff Robinson (there is more than a hint of Marvin to his tone and phrasing) - are great throughout. Chicago based Mike excels on the great beat ballad ‘Fantasy’ and the 2 stepper ‘Loveland’ as well as the mellow grooves of the title track, ‘Something That A Woman Needs’ , ‘Ill Be Watching You’ and the ballad ‘Its True’. For those that enjoy the stepping style ‘Miss Lady’ approaches it with romance and subtlety.

TEMPTATIONS – MASTERPIECE GORDY US LP £15/ CD £9.95
Masterpiece is an appropriate title for this album as it is precisely that. The penultimate album that Norman Whitfield produced for the Temps illustrates Norman’s writing, producing and Paul Riser’s arrangements skills perfectly. The 14 minute funky title cut epitomizes the 70’s Whitfield sound (quasi Blaxploitation soundtrack theme) and is almost classical in its construction of the horns and strings. ‘Hey Girl’ is a delicate semi Doo Wop ballad that shows the vocal skills of possibly the finest Soul vocal group of all-time. ‘Law Of the Land’, ‘Ma’ and ‘Plastic Man’ are archetypal strong Whitfield cuts. In my opinion, the best collaboration that Whitfield and the Temptations made.
PLEASURE – DUST YOURSELF OFF LP £75/ CD £15.95
Pleasure hail from Portland Oregon; the 8 piece band are/were the funkiest thing about the city. ‘Dust Yourself Off’, their debut from 1975 is a mix of Funk – check the horns on cuts like ‘Plastic People’, ‘Dust Yourself Off’ and the much sampled Rare Groove classic ‘Bouncy Lady’. Their version of ‘Midnight At The Oasis’ is one of the strongest versions recorded and the awesome Jazz Funk of ‘Straight Ahead’ is a barnstorming groove. This instrumental (apart from the chant) allows the band to stretch and has a Mizell sounding production style to it. The musicianship is tight both rhythmically and in the ensemble horn parts and Wayne Henderson’s production has that ‘At Home’ Texas warmth to it.
PHAROAH SANDERS – JOURNEY TO THE ONE LP £50/ CD £14.95
Pharoah Sanders had become a legendary post Coltrane innovator by the time he released this album in 1981. His late 60’s/ early 70’s ABC Impulse albums display a penchant for experimentation, incorporating music from across the globe (especially the Middle East and Africa) into a funky spiritual sound. (Check the Pharoah Sanders Anthology – a great starting point for his music that was compiled by my brother Laurence.)
‘Journey To The One’ includes the Spiritual Jazz anthem ‘You Got To Have Freedom’ that deserves the accolade as ‘classic’. On the more mainstream jazz groove side, try ‘Greetings To Idris’ and ‘Doktor Pitt’. ‘Soledad’ shows the Indian influence and ‘Kazuko’ that of Japan. Claudette Allen adds a soulful vocal to the 2 step paced ‘Think About The One’. Supporting cast includes Idris Muhammad, Eddie Henderson and John Hicks.
JOHNNY BRISTOL – LOVE NO LONGER HAS A HOLD ON ME HANDSHAKE 12” £20
Johnny Bristol possessed a fine soulful voice that never sounded better than on this track from 1981. Records on the Handshake label are highly collectable (Trilark, Karin Jones etc) but this catchy tune full of bonhomie and the feel good factor is as good as any, as Mr Bristol expresses the freedom he feels implicit in the title.
WILTON FELDER – INHERIT THE WIND MCA UK 12” £15
Crusaders saxophonist possesses a warm soulful tone to his playing, which combines Jazz improvisation and SOUL. ‘Inherit The Wind’ is probably his best recording with Bobby Womack’s impassioned vocals adding to the soulfulness. Recorded just after the international hit the Crusaders enjoyed with ‘Street Life’, this was one of the last great tracks that the Crusaders recorded, before the core of the band began to go their separate ways.
JACKIE MOORE – THIS TIME BABY COLUMBIA US 12” £20
Also recorded by the O’Jays, it is however Jackie Moore’s version that still fills dancefloors all over the world. This full-on piece of Disco Soul lets rip throughout its 7 minutes duration. And its rip roaring pace never relents and Jackie’s powerful vocal is spot-on throughout.
LENNY WILLIAMS – CHOOSING YOU ABC US 12” £30
It took a couple of releases following Lenny’s departure from the Tower Of Power to really find his feet. A string of fine albums and songs followed and he is still recording now. ‘Choosing You’ was the tune that established his solo reputation; this catchy uptempo and upbeat cut captures the spirit of the time and is a ‘fun’ song.
SLY CHI – WAVE SOUND CD £9.95
This self contained Soul/ R&B/ Funk band hail from Portland, Phoenix. Their sound is grounded in that of the 70’s with full horns, female lead vocal and tough rhythm section. – not unlike Cold Blood, Average White Band or Tower Of Power. The standard of the musicianship is especially high as local awards in the Portland area show. They cut their chops on the tough US college band circuit. The ToP influence is particularly noticeable on ‘Lost in Time’. ‘Hold On’ is a soulful riff-laden affair (a bit like FBI) with a beautiful horn arrangement. The horns go hell for leather on the gritty funk of ‘Emotions’ and the percussive groove laden ‘Step On Up’.

LOU COURTNEY – I’M IN NEED OF LOVE EPIC US LP £50/ REISSUE LP £12.95/ CD £12.95
Lou Courtney was better known as a songwriter (like Sam Dees) and only recorded one album of real note. But what an album, this is certainly one of the best 20 or so Soul albums of all-time. Lou recorded several singles for various labels in the 60’/ early 70’s and then this wonderful set in 1974. The writing shows a deep insight into the human condition and relationships, whilst the music arranged by Jerry Ragovoy and by Leon Pendarvis is pure 70’s Soul magic. Every track is worth mentioning, but it is the 2 Step magic of ‘I Don’t Need Nobody Else’ and the slightly faster title song that hit the bulls eye. For modern fans check ‘What Do You Want Me To Do’ – another classic. Lou recorded another album: ‘Buffalo Smoke’ and had a brief spell with the 5th Dimension, but ‘I’m In Need Of Love’ is his timeless legacy to our music.
TOWER OF POWER – BACK TO OAKLAND WARNER BROTHERS US LP £15/ CD £9.95
From 1974, this was the last Tower Of Power album that featured Lenny Williams on vocals. Lenny is in top gear on tracks like the beautiful ballad ‘Just When We Start Makin It’ and the equally strong ‘Time Will Tell’; Greg Adams’ horn arrangements are a delight on both. No one did horns on ballads like ToP. Try also the mid-tempo ‘Man from The Past’. Lovers of the band’s funkier side with love the jazzy instrumental ‘Squib Cakes’ written by organist Chester Thompson and the amusingly titled ‘I Got The Chop’. ‘Back To Oakland’ is one of the most soulful 70’s Power albums and testifies to a band at the pinnacle of their career.
LONNIE SMITH – AFRODESIA GROOVE MERCHANT US LP £20/ REISSUE LP £9.95/ CD £11.95
The Hammond organist (alongside Charles Earland) was probably the funkiest exponent of the instrument in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Like Earland, Smith cut his teeth with Lou Donaldson’s Band (and still plays with him now). Smith also recorded on the Columbia George Benson albums. Benson is rumoured to have played on ‘Afrodesia’. This five track set features four organ workouts including the swinging ‘Favors’ and ‘The Awakening’. The brilliant title song is a departure for Smith from the Hammond, playing synths instead is an quirky and atmospheric Jazz Funk tune that exemplifies the sound of 1975 (same era as ‘Expansions’, ‘Intergalactic Love Song’ etc), but possesses a gritty earthiness. ‘Spirits Free’ is even more atmospheric with lush percussion and subdued horn lines documenting a musical and spiritual journey. All five cuts are masterpieces in their own right.
ROY AYERS – LOVE WILL BRING US BACK TOGETHER US POLYDOR 12” £30
Classic Roy Ayers from 1979, this track originally on the ‘Fever’ album is pure Jazz Funk and Rare Groove magic. Roy, at this time was at the peak of his commercial success and could write a catchy chorus or hook line almost in his sleep. This promo 12” is hard to find, but its relentless groove augmented by that Ayers magic is sublime.

FUTURES – PARTY TIME MAN PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL 12” £25
The Futures are one of Soul’s enigmas in that their harmonies are stunningly beautiful (check the Doo Wop influenced ‘Silhouettes’ on the ‘Greetings Of Peace LP) yet they never crossed over to a broader audience. They recorded two sets for Philadelphia international ‘Past Present And Futures’ from which this thumping slice of Modern Soul and Disco came and the ‘Greetings Of Peace’. The Special Disco version (slightly longer than on the LP) is much sought after on the Modern scene and has at times fetched prices of up to £75.

LALO SCHIFRIN – JAWS US CTI 12” £20
Schifrin, renowned for movie and TV scores covered the theme from the Jaws movie upon joining Creed Taylor’s CTI label in 1976. Taylor had produced much of Schifrin’s finest work for Verve in the 60’s. The discofied version of ‘Jaws’ was a big hit and the Lalo’s arrangements complimented the more menacing original score giving it a no less thrilling edge.

SWEET THUNDER – EVERYBODY’S SINGING LOVE SONGS US FANTASY WMOT 12” £15
I remember this track (heard it first on the Robbie Vincent’s Radio London show) and the catchiness of the tune blew me away. It had that Philly feel yet was different too. Produced by Larry James (Fat Larry) and Sweet Thunder, it is a song that still raises the spirits 30 years on – it is so ‘up’. Lead singer was Booker Newberry III of ‘Love Town’ fame.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
MIKE JIMENEZ - POWER PROJECT CD £9.95
Close your eyes and you would think this was 70’s Tower Of Power. The arrangements – especially the horns take you back to a simpler place in time. Mike’s soulful voice excels on cuts like the mid-tempo groovers 'Someday We'll Get By', the powerful head-nodder 'U Know It' and the bubbly modern Soul gem 'Blessed'. Ballads like 'Girl Walk Away' and the cover of Harold Melvin's 'Hope We'll Be Together Soon' illustrate that the man is drenched in Soul. The album sounds like a Tower album c. Lenny Williams era, refreshingly old school and familiar and the band are tighter than tight - a real throwback.

LEROY HUTSON – HUTSON 1 CURTOM US LP £60/ CD £12.95
Leroy is one of Soul music’s under- appreciated geniuses. He co-wrote ‘The Ghetto’ with Donny Hathaway and replaced Curtis Mayfield in the Impressions albeit briefly until launching his solo career on Curtis’ Curtom label. ‘Hutson’ – subsequently known as Hutson 1 was his third set (from 1975). It is (in this writer’s opinion) one of the top five or six Soul albums of all-time. During the Rare Groove era, this album and cuts ‘Lucky Fellow’ and ‘All Because Of You’ defined that epoch. Mellow grooves like ‘It’s Different’, ‘I Bless The Day’ and ‘So Much Love’ sustain the mid-tempo bliss and even the instrumental ‘Cool Out’ keeps the vibe. The musicianship, songwriting and arrangements are first class, making this set just about the perfect Soul album from start to finish. . (click here for all Leroy Hutson titles in stock)
MANDRILL – JUST OUTSIDE OF TOWN POLYDOR US LP £20
When ‘Just Outside Of Town’ was released in 1973, Mandrill was at the peak of their powers. Dubbed the ‘Black’ Santana’, they filled venues up and down the US; they were bigger than Kool And the Gang and Earth Wind And Fire. . The comparison with Santana was based on the multi influences in their music rather than a copycat sound. Their natural fusion of Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Afro, Latin and Caribbean music (world music?) made an explosive mix. ‘Just Outside Of Town’ followed the brilliant ‘Composite Truth’ (one of the FUNK albums) and includes the Latin Funk of ‘Mango Meat’ and the oft sampled, multi-paced ‘Fat City Strut’. Each Mandrill set included a symphonic piece and ‘Afrikus Retrospectus’ is a wonderfully eclectic cut that traverses all of Mandrill’s influences, and ‘Love Song’ is a beautiful slow Soul track on which Carlos Wilson’s rich voice soothes, soars and serenades.
IDRIS MUHAMMAD – TURN THIS MUTHA OUT KUDU US LP £20
Idris Muhammad (born Leo Morris) was one of the top session drummers of the late 60’s/ early 70’s. He recorded countless sessions for Prestige and Blue Note and alongside Melvin Sparks and Charles Earland provided the rhythmic core for Lou Donaldson’s funky organ combo of the late 60’s. In between stints as leader at Prestige and Fantasy, he recorded four albums for Creed Taylor’s Kudu imprint. ‘Turn This Mutha Out’ was the third and alongside ‘Power Of Soul’ is the strongest. The album kicks off with fantastic Disco Jazz Funk opus ‘Could Heaven Ever Be Like This’, which was a huge cut on the UK club scene on its release in 1977. Idris’ propane fuelled drumming keeps the beat and the groove pulsating. ‘Turn This Mutha Out’ and the lyrically silly ‘Tasty Cakes’ are more Disco orientated, with less Funk and Jazz influence. The much sampled ‘Crab Apple’ has a wicked groove, whilst ‘Moon Hymn’ mixes an eerie melancholy with a funky break in the middle. The album was arranged by ex James Brown man Dave Matthews and features Jeremy Steig on flute, Hiram Bullock and the Brecker Brothers among others.
BLACK IVORY – MAINLINE BUDDAH US 12 £20
Dancefloor magic from 1979, written and co- arranged by the legend that is Leroy Burgess, this is just about the most infectious tune you will ever hear. Black Ivory at this time comprised lead vocalist Russell Patterson and Stuart Bascombe, though Leroy had previously been a member. Their vocals take this song to another level, but it is the guitar riff and driving beat over which the strings and the chorus soar. Sublime stuff that sounds as fresh as if it was recorded yesterday rather than 29 years ago.
TERRY CALLIER – I DON’T WANT TO SEE MYSELF ERECT US 12” £60
This anthem of the Rare Groove era is hard to find on the original 12” – no album with it on was released at the time. This was Terry’s last recording before his recording hiatus of 15 years, and he was sorely missed. Terry has that relaxed vocal that makes you feel at ease and as if you have known him all your life. His lyrics always strike a chord – a genius at work.
FAT LARRYS BAND – ACT LIKE YOU KNOW WMOT US 12” £25
This classic from 1982 uses the same rhythm as the Whatnauts’ ‘Help Is On The Way’. It is the catchy refrain and Fat Larry (James)’s phat Disco drums that drive the song. A slowish, plodding beat propelled by the drums and synth riff with wicked understated horns, the track was co-written and co-produced by Nick Martinelli (with Fat Larry)– it has his stamp all over it.
INCOGNITO – PARISIENNE GIRL ENSIGN FRENCH 12” £15
The track launched a band that became one of the icons of our music. At the time, Incognito were viewed as an off-shoot of Light Of The World, Bluey being a member of the group. The identifiable ‘Incognito’ sound which later emerged is not apparent at all on this instrumental that reflects the ‘Brit Jazz Funk’ sound of its day. This wicked slice of Jazz Funk filled floors and still does. Inexplicably ‘Parisienne Girl’ was released on the Ensign label only in France, and did not make the original vinyl of Incognito’s debut album ‘Jazz Funk’, though it is on the current CD version.
BLACK GOLD MASSIVE - STORIES CD £14.95 Black Gold Massive comprise Chris Morgans (ex Down To The Bone), Afro Elements’ bass player (his playing is superb) Simon Bramley and Soul vocalist Cindy Mazelle. From 2005, interest in this typically British sounding group (Brand New Heavies, Incognito etc) has been re-ignited by the Mr Gone remix of ‘Sometimes It Snows In April’ which is just out on 12” and is also on the Future Soul CD compilation on Freestyle.
'Don't Give Up Now' is a strong dancer with a driving bassline, and 'Set Me Free' is a nice mid-tempo plodder with synth strings. 'Call Me Anytime' is an irresistible soulful funky dancer and probably the best track. 'Just Make A Move' is an early 80’s sounding upbeat floor filler (not unlike the Sunburst Band). 'Introduce Me To Love' are both Good dancers and the cover of Camille Hinds’ 'Let It Flow (Sausalito Calling) is also great. This British sound is very much in vogue at the moment – Reel People, Satya Project, Sir Wick and this set ranks alongside those current strong releases.

O’JAYS – SHIP AHOY PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL US LP £15
Fresh from the International Pop success of ‘Love Train’ the O’Jays had become the definitive Philadelphia International vocal group. They were also the voices of Philly Soul’s social conscience in the 1970’s and this magnificent 1973 Gamble And Huff produced album was the O’Jays at their pinnacle. Lyrically strong, backed by MFSB at their peak and the set is superbly sung by Eddie Levert and co. It includes the stomping hit single ‘Put Our Hands Together’ and the distinctive much sampled bass led ‘For The Love Of Money’. The original version of ‘Now That We Found Love’ is taken at a slightly slower pace than Third World’s hit but it is its equal. The slower tracks are especially poignant; the powerful ‘Ship Ahoy’ (a slave ship anthem), the jazzy ‘Don’t Call Me Brother’ (hypocrisy) and the mellower ‘You’ve Got Your Hooks In Me’ give some contrast. This essential album is one of few Philly ‘Concept’ albums and probably the greatest the City Of Brotherly Love made.
JAMES BROWN – PAYBACK POLYDOR US LP £40
Quite simply James’ finest album, a double vinyl recorded just after the death of his son in 1973, every track is strong. The hypnotic funk anthem title track with its driving bass line and funky guitar riffs has been sampled many times is arguably the greatest Funk track of all-time. The punchy shuffling 10 min epic ‘Stone To The Bone’ and the social consciousness of the 12 min ‘Mind Power’ are funk anthems. The horn backed super funky semi instrumentals ‘Shoot Your Shot’ and ‘Time Is Running Out Fast’ are essentially JB’s tracks with Fred Wesley’s arrangements elevating relatively simple Funk into an art form. The ballads ‘Doin The Best I Can’ and ‘Forever Suffering’ are also very good. This is James at the top of his game both vocally and lyrically and the JB’s at their tightest and freshest. Probably the best funk album ever made, and this writer’s choice of disk to take to a desert island.
QUINCY JONES – MELLOW MADNESS A&M US LP £15
Quincy Jones, arranger writer and producer is truly a legend. He produced the biggest selling album of all-time – Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, wrote countless film and TV scores (including ‘Ironside’, ‘Roots’ and ‘In The Heat Of The Night’). But in 1975, when ‘Mellow Madness’ was released, Q (as he was known) was at his creative peak. The album introduced two new recording artists: the Brothers Johnson and Paulette McWilliams and features the likes of Minnie Riperton, Leon Ware and Hubert Laws. George Johnson sings the award winning single ‘Is It Love That We’re Missin’, whilst Minnie duets with Leon on a fine take of Stevie’s ‘My Cherie Amour’. Harvey Mason’s drums drive the funky ‘Tryin to Find Out About You’ and ‘Mellow Madness’ is a super laid-back groove with McWilliams singing lead. Though ‘The Dude’ and ‘Sounds & Stuff..’ may have sold more, this is quite possibly the finest piece of work from Quincy’s illustrious career.
ALEEM feat LEROY BURGESS – GET LOOSE NIA US 12” £20
By its release in 1984, Leroy Burgess had been recognized (at least on the underground UK club scene) as King of Boogie. ‘Get Loose’ was a massive tune on that scene and its syncopated stop-start rhythm touches on the electro sound, but this track retains its own identity. Leroy is in fine vocal and with the song’s positive message; the track has lost none of its raw power.
JOHN HANDY – HARD WORK ABC IMPULSE UK 12” £15
Mainly a straight ahead Jazz saxophonist, John Handy recorded this superb Jazz Funk cut that almost became a pop hit in the UK on its 1976 release, which is incredible, when you think of it! The catchy refrain and the clipped rhythm provide a solid backing for John Handy’s smooth sax solo. One of very few Fusion tracks that he recorded of any note.
MASS PRODUCTION РSHANTE ATLANTIC UK 12ӣ15
Excellent slice of instrumental Jazz Funk, this track was initially overlooked but was picked by the UK Jazz Funk scene. The 12” re-mix is superior to the album version and flows easily. Mass Production, whilst out of the Brass Construction mould regularly cut great jazzy dancer’s like this – their classic ‘Cosmic Lust’ being case in point. Sax, vibes and keys solos drive this epoch defining tune along.
MYSTIC MERLIN – MR MAGICIAN CAPITOL US 12” £30
From 1982, this Rare Groove classic is one of Freddie Jackson’s early vocal outings and never did he sound in such fine fettle. No doubt, his membership of Mystic Merlin helped him secure a recording contract with the label. This upbeat dancer gives Freddie free range to show his vocal prowess, EWF style horns and groove to make you move.

LORI PERRY – WROTE THIS SONG CD £9.95
Lori Perry is blessed with one of the finest and most powerful voices in Soul. Along with her sisters (Perri), Lori provided Anita Baker with backing vocals for many years and there is more than a hint of Anita’s smooth delivery about Lori’s voice (touches of Aretha too). ‘Wrote This Song’ was released in 2004. Listening to the album in retrospect, (though it received many plaudits), may be it was not given due props. The title song kicks off the album in fine style with George Duke providing a superb piano solo. The Gospel influence is strong both in message and style, but it is not so overpowering or intrusive to put off secular ears. There are two truly outstanding cuts – the forceful ‘Majesty Reigns’ and the infectious and beautiful ‘I Found It In You’. Also try the infectious ‘I’ll Follow You’, ‘Kingdom’ and poignant ‘Nine Eleven’. Throughout, Lori’s voice is in top form and the album is worth it just for the soulfulness of the voice alone.

GENE CHANDLER – 80 CHISOUND US LP £15
Gene Chandler had been one of the key players in the rise of Soul music in the sixties; his suave sophistication earned him the title of the ‘Duke Of Earl’. By the time this album was released in 1980, Gene was already a legend (and a veteran). The previous year he had released the Disco classic (and album of the same name) ‘Get Down’, the Duke was back on form. ‘80’ includes the hit single ‘Does She Have A Friend’, the 2 Step ‘Lay It Gently’ and the lilting ‘You’ve Been Sweet To Me’. The 70’s style Soul duet ‘I’ll Be There’ is a real gem and features Joni Berlmann on vocals, whilst ‘Let Me Make Love To You’ is a finger popping mid-tempo number. On the uptempo side, check the Disco Soul of ‘Do It Baby’ and ‘All About The Paper’ made famous by the Dells in the same year. This album is frequently
Tracks ‘Rainbow 80’, ‘You’ve Been Sweet To Me’, ‘All About The Paper’, ‘Let Me Make Love To You’ and ‘Does She Have A Friend’ included in ‘Rainbow 80 – A Golden Classics Edition’ CD £13.95. (click here for all Gene Chandler titles in stock)
CYMANDE – PROMISED HEIGHTS JANUS US LP £70
Cymande remain something of an enigma. Based in South London, they achieved much more recognition stateside than in the adopted homeland (England). ‘Promised Heights’ was the third and arguably their strongest album. The band’s mix of Funk, Jazz, Soul and Afro Rock defies easy categorisation other than it is great music. The influences fuse naturally in to a potent yet relaxed brew. ‘Brothers On The Slide’ is a Funk masterpiece, whilst reflective pieces like the beautiful ‘Changes’ show their mellower Jazz tinged side. The warm bass (Steve Scipio), fluid guitar (Patrick Patterson) and lush percussion gave the music a deceptively laid back feel, whilst the horn section that had three woodwinds but no brass gave their tunes a subtle and unique sound and vibe. Every track on this set is worth checking managing to sound like it was laid down yesterday not 30 odd years ago. ‘Promised Heights’, ‘Equatorial Forest’ and ‘Breezeman' are three of the sublime tracks on what is possibly the greatest UK Funk album, and one of the finest of all-time. Cymande have since reformed and gig regularly to an appreciative audience. Apparently the live show is dynamite!
Also the complete ‘Promised Heights’ album is on ‘The Messages’ CD £13.95 (along with ‘Cymande’ and ‘Second Time Around’ & various singles). (click here for all Cymande titles in stock)
FREDDIE HUBBARD BACKLASH ATLANTIC US LP £20
Freddie Hubbard’s Atlantic debut is a joyful explosion of mid 60’s Soul/Jazz. The album kicks off with two exuberant cuts ‘Backlash’ and ‘Return Of The Prodigal Son’ that combine a finger popping Motown groove with a righteous Baptist Beat. ‘On The Quee Tee’ and ‘Up Jumped Spring’ offer more challenging time signatures and show the jazzier side to Freddie. Standout is however the original version of Freddie’s ‘Little Sunflower’ that is one of the most beautiful pieces in recorded Jazz. Hubbard’s restrained solo is complimented by James Spaulding’s flute to evoke the feeling of coming across a flower in the desert – wonderful. Freddie was at his creative peak at this time and establishing the reputation as the finest trumpet player of his generation. ‘Backlash’ is man in his musical prime
GQ – DISCO NIGHTS ARISTA US 12” £15
This track almost defines a musical era and style (Disco), and it is certainly as good a Disco dancer as you will hear. 28 years on it still fills just about any dancefloor. GQ (previously known as the Rhythm Makers) created an all-time good-time groove with ‘Disco Nights’ hook line, simple guitar riff and compelling bassline. Check the phenomenal percussion breakdown half way through!
Also on Arista UK 12” £10 And on ‘Disco Nights’ LP £15 And on ‘Disco Nights’ (Best Of) CD £6.95
CHARLES EARLAND – LET THE MUSIC PLAY MERCURY UK 12” £15
Charles Earland (alongside Lonnie Smith and Jack McDuff) was probably the funkiest Hammond organ player of the 70’s and earned himself the title of the Mighty Burner. By the late 70’s economics and the logistics of moving Hammond B3s around ended the great 50s/60s era of funky Soul Jazz organ. By 1979 when this Disco cut came out Charles had abandoned the B3 in favour of the Fender Rhodes and synths. Hooking up with Brass Construction’s Randy Muller was a masterstroke. Incessant groove topped by sax and Rhodes with Skyy providing backing vocals, the pace is unrelenting and this track builds especially during the long instrumental part
AQUARIAN DREAM – YOU’RE A STAR ELEKTRA UK 12” £15
This band, put together and produced by Norman Connors featured Sylvia Striplin and saxman Claude Bartee Jr. This barnstorming cut infused with a positive message has long been a favourite in the UK. The arrangements are wonderfully orchestrated and compliment the driving beat. The track was later re-cut by another Norman Connors group – The Starship Orchestra, but it is Aquarian Dream who recorded (in our opinion) the finest version.
LINDA CLIFFORD – RUNAWAY LOVE CURTOM US PROMO 12” £75
Originally a B side to the title song of her ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’ album, this promotional 12” is well sought after for the extended version of this Disco Soul classic. The album version is about 7 minutes long (as was the UK 7”), but this 12” is extended to just under 10 minutes. The warm bass line underpin Linda’s sassy and dismissive vocal performance, and the Gil Askey arrangement has that classy late 70’s feel. The song regained popularity during the Rare Groove period and sounds better than ever.
JEAN CARN – WHEN I FIND YOU LOVE LP £20
‘When I Find You Love’ is her third and arguably best album for Philadelphia International. ‘My Love Don’t Come Easy’ and ‘Was That All It Was’ are all-time classic Philly tracks – you never tire of hearing Soul music of this quality. Jean is also on top form on Philly grooves like ‘Lonely Girl In A Cold Cold World’ and the Disco flavoured ‘What’s On Your Mind’. ‘Give It Up’ has funkier groove, whilst the slower ‘Start The Fire’ gives Jean a chance to show her vocal range and dexterity. Arrangers include Dexter Wansel, Dennis Williams (O’Jays) and John L Usry Jr. This is Jean and the Philadelphia Sound at its best. It is somewhat amazing that the album did not fair too well on the US R&B charts not even getting in the billboard top 40. The passage of time and the legendary cult status Ms Carn has attained subsequently has given this album the adulation that its music richly deserves.
WAR – WORLD IS A GHETTO UNITED ARTISTS US LP £15
War were at the top of their game when they released ‘World Is A Ghetto’. Their previous set ‘All Day Music’ that included the awesomely funky ‘Slipping Into Darkness’ broke through into the mainstream. ‘World Is A Ghetto’ hit Number 1 on Billboard and was apparently the biggest selling album of 1973! War’s mix of Funk, Latin and Blues was (still is) intoxicating. The single ‘The Cisko Kid’ remains the archetypal Latino Funk cut, whilst the dirge like ‘World Is A Ghetto’ resonates with the feel of urban America that we can still recognize today. War were also the masters of funky Jazz and the 13 minute opus ‘City County City’ is a potent mix of Jazz, Funk and Latin – check the bass and the percussion. Along with its follow-up ‘Deliver The Word’, ‘World Is A Ghetto’ is War at their most powerful – a timeless classic.
HERBIE HANCOCK – HEADHUNTERS COLUMBIA US LP £15
Probably the most influential fusion of Jazz and Funk, this million selling album from 1973 ‘crossed Herbie over to a much broader and wider audience. The hit single ‘Chameleon’ has inspired Jazz Funk artists, Hip Hop producers and music fans alike. This 15 minute cut driven by Harvey Mason’s drums and Paul Jackson’s growling bass mutates into so many segments that it sounds like 3 or 4 tracks in one. The tribute cut ‘Sly’ and ‘Vein Melter’ are more intense pieces but maintain the Funk. With ‘Headhunters’ Herbie re-invented himself after the post ‘Bitches Brew’ heaviness of his albums like ‘Sextant’ and Mwandishi and thus crossing Jazz over to an entire new audience. ‘Headhunters’ is the work of genius and it sounds more contemporary than ever and of course the famous Headhunters group were born.
ARCHIE BELL AND THE DRELLS – DON’T LET LOVE GET YOU DOWN PORTRAIT UK £15
This track is the archetypal Philly sound track. It became extremely popular in the 80’s and on the Rare Groove scene and it is easy to see why. Compelling groove, sweet harmonies and Archie in fine vocal form, this McFadden/ Whitehead/ Carstarphen song is pure Soul magic.

From ’81, this catchy song with its vocal hook line and synth riff will keep any dance floor moving – I defy anyone with an ounce of Soul to refrain tapping your foot. Lamont achieved his legendary songwriting status whilst at Motown as part of the Holland Dozier Holland trio, set up the Invictus label (with the Holland brothers) and became a recording artist in his own right. ‘Going Back To My Roots’ (a hit for Odyssey), inspired by the Roots phenomena is a 9 minute opus (6 minute UK 12” version on the flip) that is truly symphonic and tells the story of man in search of himself. From the keyboard intro this song has you hooked.

BARBARA MASON – LOVE’S THE THING LP £20
Barbara Mason holds a unique place in Soul music’s rich history. Seemingly, the perennial other woman in a love triangle, Barbara expressed through her music the feelings of being in that tricky situation (auto-biographical perhaps ?). Tracks like ‘Shackin Up’, ‘One-Two-Three’ and the answer to Shirley Brown’s ‘Woman To Woman’ – ‘From His Woman To You’ exemplify this theme. Her rich yet rugged vocals play the part perfectly – perhaps she should have taken up acting! The album comprises mainly ballads and slowish 2 Step groovers except the dirge like Funk Soul of ‘What Am I Gonna Do’. The lyrics seem tame compared to today’s RnB, but were considered racy and edgy at the time. Michael Henderson appears on bass in the band whose playing is sympathetic to the theme and representative of the mid 70’s era. Tracks quoted also on ‘Best Of The Buddah Years CD £9.95 (click here for all Barbara Mason titles in stock)
GRANT GREEN – LIVE AT THE LIGHTHOUSE BLUE NOTE DOUBLE US LP £50
Grant Green is best known for a series of fine Bop/modal and Organ albums on Blue Note recorded in the early 60’s. Sadly his funkier late 60’s/ early 70’s Blue Note work is at times overlooked, which is a shame, as this James Brown/ Sly inspired funky Jazz is fantastic. This live set recorded at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach CA in 1972 sees Grant in top form. The fluidity of his playing is breathtaking and the band well tight and funky. Wilton Felder (Crusaders) on bass and Claudee Bartee (later in the Aquarian Dream) on tenor sax excel. Highlights are the blistering ‘Windjammer’, ‘Jan Jan’ and the cover of Jr Walker’s ‘Walk In the Night’.
SLAVE – SLAVE COTILLION US LP £15
When the track ‘Slide’ was released as a single in 1977, the Funk hit the fan. This heavy duty number complete with growling bass, burning guitar and syncopated horns, Slave had arrived. This was Funk with a capital F. Slave reached their commercial pinnacle with the softer ‘Just a Touch Of Love’ and ‘Watching You’ sound of the 80’s but at this time they were up there with the iconic Funk groups like Ohio Players Parliament etc. Cuts like ‘Screw Your Wig On Tite’, ‘Party Hardy’, the thumbed bass led ‘Love Me’ and the flowing ‘You And Me’ (a UK favourite) are killer Funk cuts. Hard as nails, which even the sleeve reflects.
UNDISPUTED TRUTH – YOU + ME = LOVE WHITFIELD US 12” £15
This wonderful Disco Funk track from 1976 sees producer Norman Whitfield at his creative prime. Guaranteed to get you grooving and any crowd moving, this 11 minute thumping dancer is propelled by the emerging Rose Royce and Undisputed truth featured Chaka Khan’s sister Taka Boom on vocals at that time.
NEW JERSEY CONNECTION – LOVE DON’T COME EASY CARNIVAL UK 12” £15
This 1982 Soul/ Boogie cut remains a firm favourite on the dancefloor and an absolute classic. Driven by an infectious hook, and driving backbeat plus (P Funk inspired) synth line, ‘Love Don’t Come Easy’ is as catchy as a dance tune can be. No nonsense four to the floor heaven, topped by soulful vocals and tongue in cheek lyrics. Possibly, the group’s only recording, but what an epitaph.
Also on US 12” CARNIVAL US 12” £30 And on Groove On Down Vol 1 CD £13.95/ Double LP £14.95
WILBERT LONGMIRE – BLACK IS THE COLOR TAPPAN ZEE US 12” £15
Superb club orientated Jazz Funk track arranged by Bob James and released on Bob’s Tappan Zee imprint. Longmire’s Benson like guitar take this track to another level, but it is Harvey Mason’s drum work that gets the tune cooking. This was one of the UK’s Jazz Funk scene’s iconic tracks, and it still sounds fresh.
SYLVIA STRIPLIN – GIVE ME YOUR LOVE/ YOU CAN’T TURN ME AWAY UNO MELODIC US 12” £60
Two great sides to this 12” that Roy Ayers produced for his Uno Melodic label in 1981. ‘Give Me Your Love’ is a full-on dancer, whilst ‘You Can’t Turn Me Away’ with its chopped liquid bass remains popular with the 2 Step/ Rare Groove crowd. There is a quirkiness about Sylivia’s vocal (also in Aquarian Dream) that is quite unique. But these 2 tracks have a timelessness about them.
