Husband and wife duo Fatin and Aja make their third album and it is quality mainly mid and down tempo Soul /R&B love songs. with great harmonies. 'Can't Help It' is a really great beat ballad that gets better each time you hear it. 'Alright' and 'Pressure' are mid tempo 's with good grooves, 'Just The Way You Are' melodic mid tempo, 'Rightfully So' and 'No Limit' are good beat ballads, 'Love We Share' is a mid tempo with a fuller sound, 'House Of Love' and R&B ballad and the spoken word 'Always Be Arriving' ft Malik Yusef gives an interesting take on 'Rocking You Eternally. This album takes a couple of plays to fully appreciate but is worth the effort.

Best known for their more electronic and jazzy dance tracks, Jazzanova make more of a soul album with a full sound and featuring vocalists Jose James, Bembe Segue, Clara Hill, and Ben Westbeech amongst others.'Let Me Show You' is a string laden modern soul dancer, 'I Can See' and 'Look What You've Done To Me' are also uptempo dancers. 'What Do Ya Want' is a string laden mid tempo, 'Lucky Girl ' a nice shuffler and Leon Ware guests on a cover of his own 'Rockin You Eternally'. On the jazzier side the Brazilian shuffler 'Gafiera' will delight. Strong album

Really nice jazzy funky soul album with good lyrics and unique female vocals from Sunta Africa, real instruments and a very 'live' sound, in a style which could be compared in places to both Rebirth or Fertile Ground. 'Break Away' is a good funky soul uptempo groover, and the groove ridden 'universal' and funkier 'Raised Right' which has a nice organ backing are good uptempo tracks. The flute backed 'Stay The Night' , 'Not Used To' and 'Unity' are nice mid tempo floaters, whilst 'Working For The Weekend' has a fuller sound that builds to a crescendo. 'Soul Tango' shows some Cuban influence, and even the inoffensive raps on a couple of tracks don't detract too much from this uplifting album.

Quality mainly down tempo soul album from a very accomplished female vocalist, which will appeal to lovers of more traditional soul. 'Music' is a really nice part spoken word mid tempo groover and along with the catchy mid tempo finger popper 'For A Moment In Time' are the albums most 'up' tracks.
The rest of the album are quality ballads like 'Romantically', 'Precious Friend', 'Missin You', 'Take Time Out For Love', 'Can't Settle For Less' , 'I'm In Love' and 'That's How Much' . Really good listening album.

9 track mini album from former Erykah Badu backing singer, who graced our 'Organic Soul 2' comp. 'Four Alarm Fire' is a sample dancer, 'Oooh Baby U' is a really good mid tempo dancer and the upper mid tempo 'U Turn Me' all have a 70's feel to them. The highlights though are the haunting and melodic slowies , the duet with Raheem DeVaughn 'Come To Me', the Bob Baldwin produced 'Natural' and 'Tired Of Watching' which allow her delicate voice the space to shine through.

In my view remix album's rarely live up to the original album , in places this one could be the exception as it is done so well keeping it musical as well as dance friendly, but then the original was so good anyway. 4 hero's mix of 'Outta Love' ft Omar is given a more percussive almost bossa treatment and sounds fantastic. Rasmus Faber add's some latinish grooves to the outstanding 'Alibi' ft Darien and this also stands up well to the original. Best of the rest are 'Upside (Karizma's olds kool), Love IS Where You Are (Realm and Orto) are more soulful house, 'It Will Be (Kyoto Jazz Massive) grooves nicely and 'Anything You Want' (Domu) and Upside (bugz) edge towards Broken Beat

Very retro raw 60's sounding album from Australia's finest soul/funk band. Kylie Auldist features as vocalist on the modern soul upper mid tempo dancer 'Make It Real' and the 60's dancer 'Tears Cried' , there are some good organ backed horn led funky instrumentals incl 'One Man Entourage' and 'Funky Buttercup'. 'Sidestepper' an instrumental shuffler and 'Nightsport' is a 60's stomper, but the killer track and worth the price of the CD alone is 'Move On' ft Paul MacInnes an Isaac Hayes influenced early 70's style slinky mid tempo funky soul groover.

Robin possesses a very soulful voice and this excellent album will fully establish him in soul circles. ‘Magic' is a string laden modern soul dancer with a Curtis like groove to it and has been a monster track for sometime. 'Sidestep' and 'Something Else' are also modern soul dancers. 'You're my Baby' a nice shuffling mid tempo with great harmonies, which along with 'Mr Harmony' and 'the slinky 'Loverman' have a strong Marvin influence. The ballad's 'Sweetest Love' and 'Cry No More' are also good.

Foreign Exchange are Phonte (vocals) and Nicolay (all instruments) and their second album is a very atmospheric hypnotic mid tempo affair, that will appeal to those you like the musical style of Eric Roberson etc. The guest vocalists Darien Brockington on the heavier beat of 'All Or Nothing Coming Home To You' and Yahzarah on 'This Is Love' and the good cover of Stevie's melodic 'If She Breaks Your Heart' provide a nice contrast. The title track has a nice shuffling groove, 'Daykeeper' and 'Take Off The Blues' are mid tempos with subtle grooves and 'I Wanna Know' is a beat ballad.

Incognito's brilliant 'Tales From The Beach' album is given the remix treatment which will appeal to those who prefer their music more uptempo. The best of the remixes is 'Step Aside' (Dimitri from Paris) which whilst being more dance floor friendly retains its musical values with great strings and really works? ‘I Remember Time' (Francis Hylton's Black Moses) is an ice mid tempo groove, and 'I Come Alive' (DJ Day)is jazzier and funkier than the orig but still with a groove. 'Feel The Pressure (Mark De Clive Lowe) is jazzy house, N.O.T. (Physics) , 'Love Joy And Understanding (Tortured Soul) and 'I've Been Waiting (ski Oakenful) are harder house tracks.

Raphael Saadiq associate and former lead singer from Art N Soul and renowned producer, Sam is part of the Atlanta soul movement. The album has a Raphael Saadiq sound (unlike his own current album) to it. 'Break Up 2 Make Up' has a 70's Stylistics feel to it, the mid tempo groove 'Get Away' and the beat ballad 'This Is Your Way' show a Curtis influence. Maysa makes her first album of new material for several years and it's one of her very best albums.
Her so soulful voice captivatingly glides over an extremely well produced jazzy soul album, that oozes quality throughout. 'My Destiny' is a delightful flute backed mid tempo groover, 'Simpatico' a mid tempo floater with a groove whilst the hypnotic 'Take Me Away' and 'Never Really Ever' are slightly slower.
'Happy Feelings' is a great uptempo jazzy soul groover that really swings, and the semi instrumental 'Let's Figure It Out' (tribute to Bluey) that starts slow then kicks into a real stormer are similar to the kind she records with Incognito. 'I Need A Man' is a lyrically strong mid tempo and there's a couple of melancholy ballads. This album just gets better with each play definitely one of the albums of the year.

Raphael changes gear and makes an incredible 60's Motown esq album that reflects the excitement and rawness of that era but with a contemporary feel. 'Sure Hope You Mean It', '100 Yard Dash', 'Keep Marchin', 'Big Easy', 'Love That Girl', 'Staying In love' and 'Lets Take A Walk' all have that 60's uptempo sound, but are all quite different. 'Just One Kiss' (ft Joss Stone), and 'Sometimes' are beat ballads in a 'My Girl' style,' Calling' is a slower ballad. and the heavily orchestrated 'Never Give You Up' has a more 70's mid tempo sound and feat Stevie Wonder on harmonica and is real stand out. This album is a bold project that really works, and could be a future classic.

The annual Soul Togetherness album mixes some of the best recent ‘modern soul’ dancers with some classics from back in the day. Of the new tracks Bennson ‘Let The Love’ , Reel People ‘Amazing’, Peo Ft Mirjam ‘Tonight’ , Sheree Brown ‘I Adore You’ and the in demand Teddy Pendergrass ‘My People (500 years)’ are modern dancers. Excellent follow-up to the wonderful 'Up And Out' that is quite different but equally strong. The album is more diverse with the addition of vocal tracks and modal/ Latin flavours rather than just 60's Hard Bop. The musicianship is of the highest calibre. The opener 'The Sun In Motion' kicks matters off in more typical Invaders style with full horns and a galloping rhythm. 'Day By Day' and 'Perugia' have a Nicola Conte/ Schema vibe, the former with Frank Montis' vocal in the Mario Biondi vein. The percussive Latin/ Afro Beat tinged 'Art Mbekie' features a fine guitar solo from Eddie Roberts. The Brazilian vocal cut 'Cancao Pequena' is a joyful groove. Every track is strong. ESSENTIAL.

The Jazz Funk sound propelled by Alex Malherios unique bass glows on the funky 'Avenida Rio Branco' and on the wickedly groove laden 'Hole In One'. 'Triagem' has a breezy vibe with Jose Roberto's Bertrami's fluid fender Rhodes setting the mood. 'Morning' is a beautiful cut and is a typical Azymuth mid-tempo groove. Of all the Far Out recordings, 'Butterfly' most closely recreates the magic of the early 80s Azymuth albums.

Interesting album from Brighton based jazz vocalist on the usually reliable Tru Thoughts label. 'Raise The Roof' is an excellent foot taper with a strong rhythm. 'Take Care' is an orchestrated upper mid tempo with a strong rhythm. 'Spring Changes' has more tempo and scat vocals, 'Seven Day Fool' is a 60's style beater, 'Ode To St Cecile' is really groovy jazz, and 'All Jazz' is a nice modal track. The jazzy and more acoustic ballads 'Time' and 'Soul Bird' (with some nice trumpet background' are also good. Nice album that will appeal to those you like Elizabeth Shepherd etc.

Atlanta’s singer/songwriter Heston who made that great track ‘If’ featured on ‘this is soul 2005’ makes his debut album and what a fantastic one it is. Real songs well sung with great real instrumentation, the quality just oozes throughout. ‘My Baby’ is a singalong brassy uptempo dancer that really kicks, ‘Distant Lover’ is Marvin-esq mid tempo with a great hook  (but a different track) and ‘Easy’ also has a Marvin feel to it. ‘Radio’ and ‘Hello Sunday’ are catchy mid tempo’s , ‘Sunny Days’ is an uptempo groover and ‘Something In The Water’ a hypnotic mid tempo groover.  ‘Dreamy Eyes’ ft Angela Johnson is a beautiful ballad and ‘No Way No How’ and ‘Your Perfume’ are gentle ballads that really work. Very strong album that will appeal to you if you like the Atlanta sound (Anthony David/PJ Morton) , one of the best so far this year.

Eric makes a welcome return to the style of his first two albums after his last somewhat downbeat album. 'Love Patience Time' is a good horn backed mid tempo dancer , 'Weekend Girl' is a brassy uplifting dancer and 'Don't Let Go' and 'The Hunger' also have that 'handclapping' effect beat that keeps the feet moving. 'You're The Only One' is a really nice beat ballad and 'Chocolate Legs' is an interesting slowie whilst the latin tinged shuffler 'Spanish Fly' and soulful R&B dancer 'Iminluvwichoo' are also good.This will please his fans of his 90's work, welcome back.

Leon's unique style of smooth soul and vocal phrasing is an aquired taste but his Stax debut benefits from fuller live instrumentation and stronger production than his recent independent albums and will have a wider appeal. 'Moon Ride' a seductive bass heavy mid tempo groover with multi layered vocals. 'Smoovin' is a great 2 stepper with a nice hook and probably the albums standout track, this and 'To Serve You (All Of My love)' another mellow groover, both feature James Ingram on BV's. 'Just Take Your Time'co written by and featuring David T Walker is a quality slowie with a great hook which could easily have been taken from his classic 'Musical Massage' album. 'Hold Tonight' and 'Soon' are typical Leon atmospheric slowie's with acoustic instruments., whilst 'A Whisper Away' is a more percussive midtempo with nice sax backing, and 'From Inside' is co-written and ft Amp Fiddler on keyboards. Great down tempo album to chill to.

Superior southern soul album that is aptly titled as it features good songs with real instrumentation throughtout. Jeff has a great 'gruff' deep soul voice and the music here complements it perfectly. ‘Lock My Door' is an upper mid tempo chugger, 'Shake Something Loose' and 'Last Call' are good uptempo dancers, 'Do You Wanna' and 'How Do You Want It' are nice 2 steppers. On the ballads Jeff excels 'That Body' is a classic southern soul slowie, 'Woman's Worth' is a good duet with label boss William Bell and 'Wrapped' Up In You', 'Planning My Weekend' and 'Where Do You Go' are also nice.
Really good album probably the best of it's style so far this year..

Nice new album from new female artist with a smoky voice , which straddles both soul and jazz genres. 'Music' is a quality mid tempo head nodder that will get the neo-soul folk going, 'Cold In LA' is slightly slower but still has the groove. 'All This Love', 'Free Fall', 'Same Game' and 'Who What Why' are good soul mid tempo tracks. 'Have It Your Way' and 'Sick Of Fools' are horn backed jazz ballads and the bluesy 'I'm Leaving You' adds another dimension to this varied album, well worth checking out.

The brainchild of Neal Conway the musical genius behind early Basement Boys products from Ultra-Nate, Crystal Waters etc makes a very good varied album featuring many different vocalists. Robyn Romele ads her slinky vocals to the chugging 'Love Like That', the Bossa 'This Love Of Mine' and a couple of mid tempos. Dana Weaver's great vocals grace 'Stop and Go' an upper mid tempo groover, 'The Drive' a nice breezy mid tempo dancer and 'Understand Me' a atmospheric mid tempo and Sharon Adams belts out the dancer 'When the World Gets In The Way'. One of the best male/female soul groups of the 70's reforms with the original line up of J Blackfoot, Norman West, Queen Ann Hines and Cassandra Graham. Recorded in Memphis and produced by Larry Dodson and Archie Love this album highlights their vocal abilities which shine throughout. 'Long Ride Home' is a nice southern soul mid tempo ballad typical of their Stax output. 'Lil House Big Party' is a semi funky dancer, 'Tell Me How To Please You' a nice mid tempo dancer whilst 'The 3 Of Us' is a jerky mid tempo 'Love Triangle' song. The Soul Children always excelled on ballads and 'Love You For Life', 'More Than A Woman' and their retake of Hayes and Porter 'I'll Understand' (from their debut album) illustrate this.The programmed horns and drums unfortunately do distract a little from what otherwise would have been a really good comeback album, but their vocals are still brilliant.

Now here is a discovery. Jimmy has produced and recorded with El DeBarge, Kenny Lattimore, Brandy and others, and recorded this album over many years . 'Is There Anybody Here', 'more Of You' and 'Hello' are nice nice mid tempo shufflers, and the bright 'Guardian Angel' ft Chante Moore is really good. 'Open Your heart' has a two step feel, and the slower tracks 'Darlin', 'You Bring Me Joy', 'Crazy love' and 'Let Yourself Go' are also quality. Theres also a couple of good covers Leon Ware/Marvin's 'Come Live With Me Angel' and Heatwave's 'Star of The Story'. Really good album that should put Jimmy on the map.

'My Apology, 'Paper Doll' and 'Keep On' (ft Brian Culbertson on piano) have more a groove to them to provide so variety. This album may be too acoustic in places for mainstream soulsters but its well worth checking out.

Soul has come full circle with this brilliant album his best since his classic in the early 70's, which recreates the Willie Mitchell style and finds Al in fine voice backed by an all star band inc James Poyser , The Daptone Horns and strings arranged by Larry Gold. The standout is 'You've Got The Love I Need' a brilliant duet semi funky mid tempo dancer with Anthony Hamilton and the best new track of the year so far. 'Lay it Down ' is a beautiful string laden ballad ft Anthony on BV's. The horn backed mid tempo 'Just For Me',the beat ballad 'No One Like You' the ballad duet with Corrine Bailey Rae 'Take Your Time', the more uptempo 'I'm Wild About You' and the mid tempo duet with John Legend 'Stay With Me' are also excellent on this phenomenal album. Classic 70's soul , 2008 style.

LINA MORNING STAR CD £11.95
Lina makes her third and to my ears best album to date. The stand out is the modern soul dancer 'Feel The Love' a surefire winner, but there's plenty more within the 19 tracks. The upper mid tempo floater 'Everyday', the head nodder 'I'll Stick Around' , the hip-hop soul 'Wake Up' and 'Breakthrough' and funkier 'Joy' and 'Between Us' , mid tempo 'Get It Right' and the slower 'Good Day' which allows her sweet voice to shine are also highlights on this album which encompasses many styles.

TY CAUSEY BODY LANGUAGE CD £9.95
Ty has created his own distinctive style over his past 3 albums and continues in the same vien of mainly relaxing mid tempo grooves featuring his so soulful vocals. Typically Ty are the slinky mid tempo 'Body Language' , 'Hot Tonight', 'You'll Never Be Lonely', 'Are We Vibin' and 'Youre The Love Of my life'. Its Just A Fantasy' is slightly faster but still mid tempo and the slower 'Set You Free', 'When Your In love', 'Lovin You Aint So Easy' and 'Nice And Slow' set the mood for this quality soul album. 

MALIK ALSTON THIS MUSIC IS LIFE CD £11.95
Diverse and innovative mainly uptempo album with deep grooves from Detroit based singer/keyboardist who has worked with Amp Fiddler, Glenn Underground etc. whose influences are heard here. He is joined by other detoit artists like Piranahead, John Arnold and Allan Barnes. 'Beautiful Day' , 'Reach The Sky' and 'Just Close Your Eyes' are dancers with a slight EWF off beat infl. 'This Music Is life' has a shuffling beat and interesting horn arrangements. 'Groove' is a piano led inst with great guitar whilst 'Tie It Up' with a slight latin feel, the Trumpet led 'Hot' with scat vocals and 'Badeya' a syncopated rhythm are more uptempo. The killer track though is the brilliant horn backed 2 step groover 'You Are'. One to get into.

DEJAYE AND THE GOOD NEWS IS CD £12.95
More uptempo than most recent albums Dejaye puts the funk back into new soul. 'Play This' and 'Better Than Not' are dancers with a Rick James feel and beat to them. 'Skate Through Life'and 'If U Wanna Dance' are a bright catchy dancers, and 'U Should Let Me'; and the catchy shuffling 'Never Gonna Give U Up' are upper mid tempo groovers. 'Gotta B N 2 U' is a nice foot taper and the ballad 'Cant Live Without You' are also good, but check the killer slow jam 'Have U Ever' Nice uplifting album.

SIR WICK- AN INTERPRETATION OF A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE CD £12.95
Great album with an Incognito feel to it featuring a 10 piece band and strong female singers Sedalia Marie and Sarah D'Angelo.  'Seal My Heart', 'Thank You Lord' and 'You Are my Everything' are good uptempo tracks, whilst 'Uncomplicated', 'Moon Light Serenade' and 'What Am I To Say' are nice mid tempo floaters. The dreamy 'Without You' is a trumpet (Marcus Belgrave) led instrumental with background vocals and 'I Cant Wait' an uptempo horn led instrumental . Strong album throughout.

MARY J BLIGE  GROWING PAINS CD £12.95 LP£13.95
The first half of Mary's new album is more mainstream R&B withy tracks like 'Work That' and 'Hurt Again'.  The second half is more soulful , the dancers 'Fade Away' , head nodding 'What love Is' work well and there a nice ballad 'Work In Progress' and beat ballads 'If You Love Me' and the highlight 'Talk To Me'.
