Saxophonist and flutist Matt Wates leads his British Sextet through 11 mainly self penned tracks on this lovely album. ‘Yemanja’ and ‘The Trick’ are bustling hard bop tracks that really cook. Matt shows us what he can do with the Alto Sax on the shuffling semi-modal ‘No Way Back’ . The lively ‘Samba for Heather’ brings the South American sunshine to keep our spirits up. ‘Convoy’, ‘Hackney two Step’ and ‘There it was Gone’ are 60’s style Soul Jazz grooves. Nice album produced by the featured Double Bassist Malcolm Creese.
