Trumpeter Johnny Coles’ solo career was short, but what there lacks in quantity, is more than made up in quality. ‘The Warm Sound Of Johnny Coles’ is his debut, recorded over two dates in April 1961. The band comprised Charlie Persip (drums), Peck Morrison (bass) and an impressive Kenny Drew (piano). There are two outstanding numbers – the strident Hard Bop of ‘Room 3’ and the more restrained and lyrical ‘Hi Fly’. Another fine performance is the enigmatic ‘Pretty Strange’ one of four Randy Weston tunes. There are bonus cuts that feature Coles. Highly recommended.
