Ultra sassy, strong voiced Rene Marie returns with a great vocal jazz album that puts her up with the best in the biz. At times highly personal the 11 tracks here shimmer with immaculate playing complimenting Rene’s smokey but always defined vocals. ‘The Sound of Red’ has a sneaking jazz blues feel, ‘If You Were Mine’ is an irresistible finger klicker, ‘Lost’ really kicks on after the bass has felt around for the tempo while ‘Stronger Than You Think’ has a wonderful cascading feel on the intro before it slides into a breezy groove with a ton of atmosphere. ‘This Is (Not) A Protest Song has a wonderful soulful-folk air with a dose of Americana thrown in that will give it wider appeal – the message and story are engaging too. ‘Joy Of Jazz’ is just that – a playful, off beat tempo with the band and Rene really having fun while she ends the set in reflective and celebratory mood with another radio friendly tune that branches out wider than just jazz. Good set, faultless voice!
