Funky new offering from Gina Carey ‘Soul Singer’ sees her in a rawer mood with organic grooves such as the opener ‘Dance’, the aptly titled ‘It Better be Funky’ and the skittish ‘Roller Coaster’ among the highlights. ‘Brand New’ is a slick, mid tempo head nodder, ‘Side by Side’ has a good dance swagger while the lush ‘Through The Waters’ is a quiet storm ender. Lyrically much of the material talks about her faith but it is subtle and has broader appeal. Good soulful album with some rawer funky edges
