Originally recorded in 1999 and released to critical acclaim but little commercial success Nat Birchall’s ‘Sixth Sense’ CD had been out of press until this issue. ‘Indivisible’ is an energetic opener with a strong sense of the live atmosphere that pervades the whole album. Full of free improv passages the horn section vies with the urgent drums while everything breaks for the mellow piano lines before cascading into a crescendo. ‘Ism Schism’ has more of a groove with a black jazz feel to it, ‘Unity Blues’ is a great hard bop mover while ‘Redemption’ is dominated by the sax with those drums crashing through at times. ‘And So On’ has a quick tempo dictated by the pacey bass underscoring the tune while ‘Adin’ is a gentle ballad placed ideally in the centre of the set. Fantastic Jazz that will please fans of free and hard bop.
