French band Dopegems take some great complex Funky Jazz tracks and give them contemporary instrumental workouts. Michael Longo’s ‘Like a Thief in the night’ is taken at breakneck speed and has some nice vibes playing. Ramon Morris ‘First Come First Served’ is made more psychedelic. The version of Ethel Beatty ‘It’s Your Love’ is very hypnotic, ‘I Work the whole city’ is very vibrant, and Bennie Maupin’s ‘Quasar’ intensely beautiful. Their are also good covers of soul tracks ‘Footsteps in the Dark’ and ‘One Night Affair’. This album makes you realise how great the music from the early to mid 70’s was. Really good album.
