Blue-eyed West Coast soul man Mayer Hawthorne lays down a set of grooves that transport us back to the future circa 1981 with his 4th album ‘Man About Town’: sort of a timewarp of endless beach summers and yacht soul with a nod to the easy knowingness of Hall & Oates (check ‘Love Like That’ – clearly a study of the 80’s legends sound) or the sass of Michael McDonald and Steely Dan. ‘Cosmic Love’ is an instant classic, ‘Book Of Broken Hearts’ and ‘Lingerie And Candlewax’ are continuations of the vibe he laid down as Tuxedo (with Jake One) while ‘The Valley’ and ‘Out Of Pocket’ tread that afternoon private disco feel of July in the early 80s so well. Fantastic album for 30 minutes of turn of the decades eighties nostalgia.

This is a really good album. The only downside is it could do with a few extra tracks, probably because the quality leaves you wanting more.
