Lizz Wright set us alight with her debut ‘Salt’ a decade ago, now teams up with Ace producer Larry Klein and returns with a very together and more Soul and Blues oriented album ‘Freedom and Surrender’, backed by a great tight band featuring Pete Kuzman on B3 and Kenny Banks on Fender Rhodes. ‘Freedom’ is an urgent upper tempo Soul/Jazz groove. ‘The New Gone’ a good mid tempo Bluesy/Soul shuffler, ‘Lean In’ is a lovely haunting mid tempo song and ‘Right Where you are’ a lovely ballad duet with Gregory Porter. Till Bronner plays a mournful trumpet solo on the atmospheric ‘River Man’. Nice album.
