CRUSADERS – IMAGES CD £12.95
Possibly Images is the last truly great Crusaders album comprising seven instrumental pieces. It was bassman's Pops Popswell's last album with the group; he wrote the classic 'Cosmic Reign' for the album – a tight Jazz Funk groove with jazzy overtones. 'Snowflake' is a lighter cut, whilst 'Fairy Tales' and the popular sample 'Bayou Bottoms' and 'Marcella's Dream' are all strong tracks. In fact every track is quality. The band's ensemble playing is tight and the solos (especially Joe Sample) are fine. Brilliant.

GROVER WASHINGTON JR – A SECRET PLACE CD £12.95
From 1977, this album was a bit of change of direction for Grover. Out went the orchestrated arrangements of Bob James, and in came a sparser sound courtesy of Dave Matthews' arrangements. 'A Secret Place' is a wonderful mid-tempo Jazz Funk cut with our man and Dave Grusin delivering superb solos. 'Not Yet' has as understated intro that builds into a funky slice of Fusion. Again Grusin, Grover (on tenor) and Eric Gale share the solos, and is underpinned by Anthony Jackson's wicked bass and Harvey Mason's tight drumming. 'Love Makes It Better' is mellower, whilst Herbie Hancock's 'Dolphin Dance' adds an atmospheric Jazz feel.

From 1973, at this time Roy could do no wrong. From '72 to '80 just about every album was either 'on it' or had a classic or several on it. Grooves like the compulsive 'Brother Louie' and the instrumental belter 'Des Nudes Soul' are funky and Fusion of the highest quality. The uptempo take on 'Love From The Sun' features Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. 'Virgo Red' and the 2 Step paced 'Giving Love' (Leroy Hutson penned/Voices of East Harlem track) add variety to an ultra strong Roy Ayers album.

Gonna Be Alright' and I'm On My Way back To You' are more uptempo in an Invictus production style. There's also a few nice country soul ballads like 'Forty Days and Forty Nights' . 26 track compilation that covers his CTI classics, his own Tappan Zee work. Bob has a very distinctive and delicate piano style that presaged Smooth Jazz. Percussionist Willie's two great jazz funk albums from 1978 and '79 together on one CD. 'Hell of an Act ' was produced by Wayne Henderson and features a great line up incl Bobby Lyle, Ernie Watts etc. it includes his big jazz funk club hit and possibly definitive version of Ronnie Laws 'Always There' both in album and 12” remix versions. Also there's 'Keep That Same Old Feeling' the uptempo 'Sixty-Two Fifty' and a good vocal version of 'Dindi'. Lonnie Liston Smith personified mid 70s Jazz Funk at this time.

GLORIA JONES –SHARE MY LOVE CD £13.95
Interesting 1975 album from Motown song writer which features a combination of mid 70's semi funky soul and more traditional soul ballads. The highlights are the atmospheric heavily orchestrated mid tempo tracks semi funky 'Share my Love' and 'So Tired Of The Way You're Treating Me' on which her powerful vocals excel. There is also a great version of the ballad so co-wrote for Gladys Knight 'If I Were You're Woman', and other good string laden ballads 'What Did I Do To Lose You' , 'Old Love New Love' and 'Try Love'. The single 'Tin Can People' is a more funky track ala Yvonne Fair.

Great Memphis Soul album from 1973 produced by Willie Mitchell and featuring the Hi Rhythm section and Memphis Strings, and sounding both vocally and musically very much like Al Green's classics from that time. The mid tempo tracks like 'I've Been Searching', 'Nothing Comes To A Sleeper' and 'You Must Believe In Yourself' are in a similar style to 'Love And Happiness'. OV excels on the ballads 'He's my Son' , 'Lost In The Shuffle' , 'Please Forgive Me' , 'Are You Going Where I'm Coming From' and 'Ghetto Child' are great. This is a very under rated album and ranks amongst the best southern soul of that time.

Excellent 1974 album produced by Bobbi Eli at sigma sound Philadelphia with that distinctive Philly sound. Includes the excellent modern dancer 'Each Morning I Wake Up', 'After Loving You' and 'Two Wrongs'. The mid tempo stepper 'Loving You Is Mellow' and' Sweet Tomorrow' are also highlights, his version of 'Sideshow' is good, but it is the ballad and his big hit 'Love Wont Let me Wait' an all time soul classic that Major is best remembered for. Classic 70's Philly Soul.

Nathan Davis is one of the undiscovered or under-appreciated geniuses of Jazz saxophone (and flute). This superb collection covers his Bop/modal, freer Jazz and Fusion work. The openers 'B's Blues' and 'Sconsolato' have a Coltrane (c. 1960) feel and Nathan's playing certainly sounds influenced by 'Trane. 'a5'has a modal feel, whilst the cover of 'Theme From Zoltan' is exquisite. Hubbard's 'Up Jumped Spring' is given a free improvisational swing propelled by Art Taylor's drums. 'Tragic Magic' is revered in Jazz dance circles. Much of this album was recorded in Europe and has a slightly more flexible approach than US recordings. High quality and compliments the recent release of his classic album 'If' .

Willie's debut album for RCA from 1969 gives us the embryo of his distinctive style of songwriting, singing and production that was to really blossom in the 70's at Motown. 'Ain't Gonna Stop' is a brassy upper mid tempo track that sounds from a much later period, 'You Gotta Try' is very uplifting, and the ballad 'That's What I Call Love' is also good. The album is best known for the classic Northern Soul floater 'Lucky To Be Loved By You' a brilliant track, 'Do What You Wanna Do' has a driving beat and the mid tempo 'You Keep Lifting Me Higher' is also good.

Barbara Mason's ballad 'I am Your Woman She is Your Life' and Irma Jackson/Larks 60's dancer 'Without You Baby' but the best tracks are the unreleased gems by The Three 3P's/MFSB 'Would You Believe Me' (also Gerri Granger's version), a killer philly dancer, Barabra Cole '79 dancer 'No Other Love' and Rhonda Berg 2 stepper 'Willing To Bet Cha' and dancer 'Come Share My Umbrella'. Gerri Granger also scores on the ballad 'Why Can't You Be Nice To Me' and Weldon teams up with Dahlia for the string laden mid tempo shuffler 'Lover Man'.

RONNIE McNEIR RONNIE McNEIR (1972) CD £14.95
Ronnie's debut album from 1972 is another undiscovered Detroit gem, featuring a great rhythm section,
Inc Bobby Watson and Tony Maiden with Hodges James and Smith on Bv's. The album has that sophisticated soul (ala Dozier or Hutson) sound and the songs work as a total album rather than individual tracks. 'Extra Extra' is a great Motown-esq dancer ft Kim Weston. 'Tears In My Heart', 'Trouble's A Loser' and 'Keep Your Hands Off My Lady' have a Hutson feel to them. 'In The Summertime' has the same riff as his '75 2-step classic 'I'm Your Lover', and the beat ballads 'You Better Make Sure' and 'Daddy's Coming Home' have great harmonies. Really good early 70's soul album.

POPCORN WYLIE EXTRASENSORY PERCEPTION CD £14.95
This 1974 album from underground Detroit singer Richard Popcorn Wylie was produced by McKinley Jackson and arranged by Gene Page and Paul Riser, with Lamont Dozier co-writing most of the songs.
The album is in a similar style to Lamont's own albums of the time also recorded for ABC. The killer is the brilliant string laden modern soul instrumental 'How Did I Lose You'. The mid tempo 'Singing About Me And You', Georgia's After Hours', 'ESP', 'Lost Time', 'I Can Take The World On With You' and the ballad 'Trust In Me' are great examples of fully orchestrated 70's Soul. Another little known gem.

Strong relatively unknown second album from Betty's brother orig released on TK's Alston label in 1977.
The string laden dancers 'She Can Have Anything She wants', 'Job' and 'You Like To Dance are good, and 'Dance Have Fun' and 'Magic Music' keep the tempo up. 'You Don't Even Know Me' and 'Be With Me' are good mid tempo dancers and the atmospheric mid tempo groover 'Leave me Alone' is a standout.
'Lets Take A break' has that distinctive Miami funky groove and 'All I Know Is That I Have You' is a really nice mid tempo. An undiscovered gem.

Roy's first Polydor album in 1970 includes gems like 'Pretty Brown Skin', Nat Adderley's 'Hummin' and the psychedelic 'The Fuzz'. Roy's take on 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' has a wicked walking jazzy bass line. The funky 'Love' has a groove that later would-be known as Jazz Funk, whilst 'Can You Dig It' is funkier still. Ubiquity's members at the time included keyboard wizard Harry Whittaker.

A Song For The Children's title song is similar in musical style to 'Space Princess', whereas 'Aquarian Cycle' has a more hypnotic and funky feel. These two albums were an early outing for bassman Marcus Miller.

19 tracks either sung, written or produced by the charismatic Leon, which contains some overlooked but golden nuggets. Leon's songs have a really distinctive style with great melodies and arrangements. Highlights are his own atmospheric 'It's Your World', 'Everywhere Inside Of Me' and 'Girl Girl Girl'. Syretta 'I Don't Know' is a fantastic mid tempo stepper, Chuck Jackson 'No Tricks' a good dancer, Jerry Butler 'Thank You Early Bird' a shuffler and Michael Wycoff 'Looking up To You' a classic. The 2 steppers Shadow 'I Cant Hold Back', Thelma Jones 'I Can Dream' Minnie Riperton 'Can You Feel What I'm Saying' and Booker T 'I Came To Love You' are also very good. Great showcase of an underrated genius.

Mandrill were one of the great Funk/soul bands of the 70's and these 1978/1980 albums were their most soulful and appear here on CD for the first time. 'Too Late' is a modern soul classic, a string laden mid tempo dancer. 'It's So Easy Lovin You' and 'Stay Tonite' are brilliant soulful dancers, whilst 'Feeling Good' is a brassier and jazzier dancer. 'My Kind Of Girl', 'Dance Of Love' and 'Love Made Me \Over' are soulful dancers, 'When You Shake', 'Having a Love Attack' are funkier but soulful up-tempo grooves. The haunting mid tempo 'Getting In The Mood' , ballad 'When You Smile' and the stepper 'Coming Home' provide a nice contrast. Two really good albums from a classic period of our music.

GREY AND HANKS YOU FOOLED ME JAPANESE CD £24.95/ ORIGINAL LP £15
The debut album from the song writing duo seems to have aged like a vintage wine. 'How Can You Live Without Love' is a popular quality 2 Step and 'You Fooled Me' has always been a fine slice of danceable Soul. 'Dancin' adds an element of Disco Soul. It is however tracks like the upbeat 'Gotta Put Something In' and wonderful 'Closer To Something Real'. Earth Wind & Fire horns add brass and the overall sound is not unlike LTD, for whom they wrote songs especially noticeable on 'Never Let You Down'.

Good underground early 80's boogie comp from the relatively unknown NY Tap label. The standout is the string laden 'Philly' style dancer Jackie Stoudermire 'Invisible Wind' a fantastic unknown track to get crowd going. Jackie also contributes the modern soul dancer 'Guilty' and 80's boogie 'Don't Stop Dancing' and 'Run Away Hide'. Arnie Love and Lovettes (later known as Arnie's Love) 'We've Had Enough', 'Breakout' and 'Stop and Make Up Your Mind' are good brassy 80's boogie dancers. There are even a couple of early hip hop (ala Sugar hill gang) tracks thrown in for good measure. Nice comp.
