TOMMY TATE HOLD ON JACKSON SESSIONS AND UNRELEASED CD £14.95
Tommy is one of those great soul singers who cut many great southern soul sides but never achieved the fame or acclaim he deserved. His deep soulful voice is at home on this collection of tracks mainly recorded in 1979 although there are a few 60's and early 70's tracks thrown in. 'Friend Of Mine' is a great bluesy soul mid tempo with nice Rhodes, 'Little Boy' is an uplifting dancer, and the modern soul mid tempo 'I Cant Do Enough For Ya Baby' and 'Do You Think There's A Chance' are also highlights. The ballads 'Get It Over Anyway' and 'Hold On' and the emotive 'Peace Is All We Need' and mid tempo 'I'd Really Like To Know' are also strong. Best of the unreleased tracks are the gutsy 'Solid Straight And Sound' and 'So Hard To Let A Good Thing Go'

The bonus track 'Spoiled' is a good version of Ben E King's 2 stepper .

JERRY RAGAVOY STORY – TIME IS ON MY SIDE CD £13.95
Many of the best songs from Songwriter arranger and producer Ragovoy ‘s 50 year career. Lorraine Ellison ‘Stay With Me’ is an acknowledged classic a featuring Jerry’s trademark strings, horns and ‘big’sound. Garnett Mimms ‘Cry Baby’ is another mid 60’s ballad and Pat Thomas ‘I Cant Wait Until I See my Baby’s face’ another 60’s gem. Carl Hall is represented by two tracks his ’67 beat ballad ‘You Don’t Know Nothing About Love’ and his ’73 mid tempo classic ‘What About You’ showing what a great singer he was. Lou Courtney’s great ‘What Do You Want Me To Do’ is from his ’74 album, possibly the best Jerry produced. Dionne Warwick ‘Move Me No Mountain’ from ’75 and Major Harris lesser known ‘Pretty Red Lips’ are also classy tracks. There’s enough great tracks on this comp for everyone.

This era often gets overlooked in the history of Blue Note; that would be a big mistake as the the Mizell Brothers produced tracks sound especially fresh in 2008.
VARIOUS - FUNK JAZZ BROTHERS: Focuses on the period between 60's Hard Bop and 70's Jazz Fusion. The funky Soul Jazz includes many organ Jazz workouts such as Lou Donaldson 'Hot Dog', Lonnie Smith 'I Can't Stand It' and Jack McDuff 'Butter For You Popcorn'. Also includes 3 Grant Green cuts 'In The Middle', 'Let The Music Take Your Mind' and 'I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing' and 2 unreleased Bobby Hutcherson tunes 'Inner City Blues' and 'Family Affair'.
VARIOUS - AFRICAN RHYTHMS: Africa influenced many of Blue Note's greatest names in the Hard Bop/ Modal period. These 17 tracks document some of the most inspired including Jackie McLean 'Appointment In Ghana', Lee Morgan 'Afreaka' and 'Mr Kenyatta', Art Blakey 'Africaine' and Solomon Ilori 'Yaba E'. Also check the latter Donald Byrd cut 'Kofi' only released in the 90's, though recorded 25 years earlier.
VARIOUS - NEW YORK IS OUR HOME: Hardcore 50's Hard Bop prvided the foundation for the label's greatness and the Blue Note sound. Whilst the music sounds more raw than the 60's Bop, it has an edgy quality that the more better produced latter albums sometimes overpowered. Includes classic like Kenny Dorham 'Minor Holiday', Sonny Rollins 'Misterioso' and Horace Silver 'Doodlin' alongside lesser known contributions from Kenny Burrell, Elmo hope, Louis Smith 20 cuts in all

SUNBURST BAND- MOVING WITH THE SHAKERS CD £11.95
Fantastic mainly uptempo album combining 70's and early 80's influences with a contemporary sound, featuring the vocals of Leroy Burgess, Taka Boom, Pete Simpson and others. Highlights are the disco/funk of 'Our Lives Are Shaped', 'Sitting On Top Of The World', 'Days Gone By' and 'Put A Lyric In it' (which could have been recorded on prelude circa 79-80). 80's boogie style is represented by 'Survivin' and 'Fashion', the 4 Hero-esq 'Journey To The Sun' and 'Turn It Out' also score well. There's some good instrumentals 'Dusk' , 'Monterey' and 'Free Bass', and the 2 step title track. Best of all though is the Norman Whitfield influenced shifter 'Man Of War'. Probably the best retro-sounding album of recent times and one of the albums of the year.

Arranged by a young Bob James, the all-star band included Bob, Idris Muhammad, Eric Gale, Ron carter and Airto! The 'CTI/Kudu' sound was falling into place; Grover's debut was an integral part of that process.

Joined by trumpeter Eddie Henderson, the frontline of Leon, Gary and Eddie is an all-star cast. ‘Precious Energy (Sun Song)’ is a 13 minute cover of the song Leon recorded with Pharoah Sanders. ‘(Little) Sunflower’ captures the feel and spiritual lyrics of Leon’s collaboration with Louis Hayes – Leon’s words being particularly moving and poignant. Coltrane’s ‘Cousin Mary’ is a barnstormer with our 3 geniuses inspiring one another. Bartz is especially in fine form ably supported by Henderson and a tight band – check ‘Close Your Eyes’. The guys also immerse themselves in the blues on cuts like ‘Woman’ and ‘You Treat Me Like A yo-yo’.

BOBBY WOMACK HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS/PIECES CD £12.95 (FROM MID TO LATE DEC)
These two albums were cut in mainly in Muscle Shoals for Columbia in the mid 70's, and amongst the best that Bobby recorded..Two Prince Phillip Mitchell tracks, 'Home I Where The Heart Is' a great track , a dancer that has retained its popularity, and 'Something For My Head' another popular dancer are probably the highlights from 1976 'Home Is' album., although the ballad 'One more Chance On Love' and the cover of 'Change Is Gonna Come' are also great. The 1978 Don Davis produced 'Pieces' contains' the epic mid tempo 'Trust Your Heart' with David Ruffin on bv's, and the lovely 'Stop Before We Start' ft Candi Staton' and the great 'Caught Up In The Middle' . This 1970 set features 5 long workouts including a wonderful take on 'Scarborough Fair' that echoes Coltrane's version of 'Greensleeves'. 'The Fence' and 'Early In The Morning' are wicked grooves that straddle 60's Modal/Late Bop and 70's early Fusion (a la Brian Auger). 5 bonus tracks from his self-titled 1968 album including the aforementioned 'Hipster' and the swinging 'The Cottage' add value to this excellent mid-priced set. Essential British Jazz.

RANCE ALLEN SAY MY FRIEND CD £12.95
Probably the best album and certainly the most soul oriented album from the powerful voiced Rance and his Brothers. The Mizell Brothers produced it in 1977 and add their semi funky layered sound and each song has a positive message . Highlights are the string laden stormer 'Truth Is Marching On' , the great mid tempo two stepper 'Reasons To Survive' with its swingling strings and great guitar licks and 'Peace Of Mind' an all time classic dancer with typical Mizell rhythms that builds and builds. Also check the ballads 'Im Gonna make it After All' and 'You're My Everything' and the dancer 'Got To Be ready'. Strong album.

PIECES OF PEACE – PIECES OF PEACE CD £13.95 LP £13.95
This previously unreleased material was recorded in Chicago in the early 70’s and is a mix of Funk and Spiritual Jazz ft Derf Reklaw and EWF horns. In style, this seven piece band is not unlike the Pharoahs. ‘Pollution’ is a superb slice of leftfield Funk that echoes Exit 9’s driving street sound. ‘Peace & Blessings’ hits a wickedly jazzy groove with its walking bassline ,whilst ‘Peace And Blessings’ starts with EWF style vocal harmonies and then builds into a spritiual jazz workout. Highly recommended
LIFEFORCE – FEARLESS WARRIORS CD £13.95 LP £13.95
From 1979, this Spiritual Jazz tinged Fusion set derives its inspiration from the likes of Pharoah Sanders. ‘Fearless warriors’ is fine tough Jazz Funk groove, whilst ‘To Pharoah With Love’ adds a Bossa flavour. Previously this album was released solely as a private pressing and is nigh impossible to find. The slower ‘Atlanta Anna’ and the relaxed ‘Wow’ are archetypal late 70’s Jazz Funk a la Crusaders/ early Spyro Gyra, whilst ‘Sister Bea’ is a melodic groove.
MAIN INGREDIENT- SPINNING AROUND –THE SINGLES 1967-75 CD £13.95
Main Ingredient were one of the leading vocal harmony groups of the 70’s and here are 22 of their singles. Many are outstanding but particularly the great 70’s dancer ‘Happiness Is Just Around The Bend’,
Willie Hutch’s stepper ‘California My Way’, and the modern dancers ‘Good Old Days’ and ‘Shame On The World’. Also check the civil rights ‘Brotherly Love’ the funky soul dancer (ala Temps) ‘Black Seeds Keep Growing’, the ballads ‘Im So Proud’, ‘You’ve Been My Inspiration’ and ‘You’ve Got To Take It’ , their hits ‘Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely’ and ‘Everybody Plays The Fool’ and the semi funky orchestrated ‘Rolling Down A Mountainside’. Quality 70’s soul.
CHARLES KYNARD – CHARLES KYNARD CD £19.95
Hammond maestro released this superb funky organ set in 1971. Powered by Kynard’s driving B3 and fluid fender bass lines courtesy of Carol Kaye, tracks like ‘Greeze’ and ‘El Toro Poo Poo’ are relentless. ‘Grits’ is a bluesy affair, whilst ‘Greens’ is a tough swinging groove, with Ernie Watts starring on tenor sax. Kynard recorded a few fine organ albums for Mainstream and Prestige, this up there with the best of them.
GATO BARBIERI RUBY RUBY CD £12.95
Follow up to 'Caliente', this under-rated album is more Latin tinged than its predecessor, which is a classic Jazz funk album). Gato's earthy tenor is expressive and growls over laid-back grooves like 'Latin Reaction' and 'Nostalgia'. The breezy 'Ngiculela-Es Histoiria..' is an upbeat dancer, 'Adios' flows at an ever increasing pace. The rhythm section includes Lenny White and bassist Gary King. This Fusion album oozes class and manages to sound fresher today than when it was recorded.
FRANK FOSTER LOUD MINORITY JAPANESE CD £19.95 LP £9.95
Ex Count Basie MD, Foster's intense sax is the perfect vehicle for this great Spiritual Jazz album. The title song featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater is a definite political statement and was re-interpreted in the 90's by UFO. 'JP's Thing' is a hard left of centre funky Jazz groove, driven by Stanley Clarke's relentless bass line. Try also the gentlier 'EW Beautiful People', whose vibe is very spiritual.
BOOTSY'S RUBBER BAND STRETCHIN OUT CD £13.95
WILLIAM 'BOOTSY' COLLINS ONE GIVETH… CD £13.95
Remastered and sounding fresher than ever before, these 2 albums are probably the pinnacle of Bootsy's solo work. 'Stretchin Out', 'My Point Of View' and the infectious 'Psychoticbumpschool' are the bass player at his funkiest best. Check also the slowies like 'I'D Rather Be With You' and the spacey 'Love Vibes'. 'One Giveth is his last great set from 1981, what was the first side of the vinyl is strong throughout with Bootsy's wit to the fore on cuts like 'Landshark', 'Countracula' and '#1 Funkateer'. Also try 'take A Lickin And Keep On Kickin' and 'What's W-r-o-n-g Radio'.
