KIM WATERS – LOVE STORIES CD £15.95
A mellow set of smooth groves from one of Smooth Jazz’s most consistent performers, the title suggests a romantic slant and that’s what is delivered on cuts like ‘For Lovers Only and the vocal ‘One More’ that features Kenny Lattimore on vocals.  Try the slick ‘Hanging Out’ with its deep jazzy bass line.  Slow cover of Rose Royce’s ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ shows a soulful side to Waters’ playing.

MICHAEL ROSS – A SPECIAL THING CD £12.95 (ANTICIPATED 9 FEBRUARY 2010)
Michael Ross is a Smooth Jazz guitarist of repute in the playing style of George Benson or Norman Brown.  On this excellent album full of smooth grooves, it is vocal tracks that take centre stage.  The opener ‘A Special Thing’ is a beautifully crafted song whose vocal has a touch of Jon Lucien and Will Downing to it.  ‘Don’t Make Your Move So Fast’ has a dreamier ambience, whereas ‘Come On Over’ is a strong ballad.  Smooth Jazzers will love the languid ‘The Blaze’, whilst ‘The Secret Door’ is funkier and ‘The River Walk’ is another strong groove. Excellent.

EVERETTE HARP – FIRST LOVE CD £16.95
This quality album produced by George Duke and featuring some of Smooth Jazz/ contemporary Jazz's finest musicians is an exquisite selection of instrumentals. It has Duke's classy production stamp all over it. Harp's alto playing is sweet and soulful especially on mellow jazzy tracks like 'Central Park West' and 'First Love'. On the upbeat side check the Fusion groove of 'Soul Fries' that has a touch of the Crusaders to it or the bass led funky groove of 'Departure'. 'The Council Of Nicea' is fine sleek smoothish groove. Welcome return from the evergreen saxman.

EUGE GROOVE – SUNDAY MORNING CD £15.95
Popular saxman returns with a superb set of mellow Smooth Jazz grooves that will re-establish Euge Groove as one of the music’s finest sax players.  Cuts like ‘Say My Name’, ‘All For You’ and ‘The Gospel Truth’ emanate a Sunday morning vibe.  As does the title track!   On the funkier side check ‘Babylon’ – very Bone James-ish as well as the sleek ‘On Your Knees’.  If you like 80’s style Soul then try ‘Yes’ featuring a vocal performance Dax Reynosa.  An excellent Smooth set.

SAX PACK – PAC IS BACK CD £13.95
Sax Pack comprises three highly accomplished Smooth Jazz sax players: Kim Waters, Steve Cole, Jeff Kashiwa. This, their second CD, compliments the debut with a selection of sax led instrumentals like the easy going 'Can't Help Myself' and the flowing 'Wanna Get Closer'. The Grover tinged 'Smooth As Silk' has a strong funky smooth groove as does the heaver, more free 'Are You Ready'. This set is fine Smooth Jazz that will appeal to lovers of the genre and in particular those who love the saxophone

SHAKATAK – AFTERGLOW CD £12.95
Over the years Shakatak have developed a distinctive sound based around 'smooth' gently funky grooves that radiate their own charm and warmth. Jill Saward's fresh vocals compliment the grooves – check 'Afterglow' title track, the pleasant 'In My Heart' or the highly infectious 'Giving Up'. The Latin tinged shuffler 'Freefall', the funkier 'Tower Of Babel' adds a slightly different approach, whilst 'Groove Me Tonight' has that catchy British Jazz Funk era sound that is still so popular. Of the instrumentals 'Domino Dance' is the strongest with its warm fender keys and nice bass line. This is a strong Shakatak album whose appeal will be primarily to their many fans, though it is definitely worth a listen.

GEORGE ANDERSON – POSITIVITY CD £12.95
Shakatak’s bass player George Anderson releases a solo project.  More Soul tinged than the Shakatak set, the album includes a number of strong 80’s style vocal tracks like ‘Lay Ur Hands On Me’ that sound a bit like the kind of track Luther might have recorded early in his career.  Check the jazzier ‘It Ain’t Over’ or the Shakatak influenced ‘Beauty Inner Smile’.  ‘Positivity’ is a nice groove infused set which lives up to its title.

BRIAN CULBERTSON – LIVE FROM THE INSIDE CD + DVD £21.95
Recorded at the legendary Capital Studios in Hollywood (where Frank Sinatra and the Beatles recorded), Culbertson recuts some of his most popular tracks such as ‘Get It On’ and ‘Back In The Day’ with a full band including a horn section live in the studio.  There is one new track ‘Go’ – a solid Smooth Jazz groove that typifies Culbertson’s lively approach to his music.  Tracks like ‘Get It On’, ‘Do You Really Love Me’, ‘So Good’ and ‘On My Mind’ are archetypal Culbertson groves.  His playing (like Ramsey or Rodney Franklin) is expressive and the band’s musicianship exceptional.  The live feel The CD contains 12 songs whilst the DVD has 26.  The supporting cast – a who’s who of smooth Jazz includes Dave Koz, Eric Marirenthal, Eric Darius, Michael Lington, Ray Parker and many more.

Down To The Bone – Future Boogie CD £13.95
Excellent album from Stuart Wade and the boys, the musicianship is top notch with tight horns and wicked rhythm section.  Grooves like ‘Future Boogie’ and ‘Spiderlegs’ are full-on funky Jazz barnstormers.  Try the infectious riff laden ‘We’ve Always Got The Music’, the heavier ‘Smash And Grab’ and slower ‘In The Pocket’. There are 2 quality vocal tracks – ‘Should’ve Been You’ and the gorgeous ‘The Brighter Side’ feature the awesome Hil St Soul, whilst ‘Good To Me’ has a scat from Roy Ayers, who also adds a vibes solo on a Brand New Heavies style cut.  All-round this is DTTB’s best album for several years.  Must also mention Neil Angilley’s keyboard work and Tony Remy’s ultra funky rhythm guitar.

TOM BRAXTON – ENDLESS HIGHWAY CD £14.95
Smooth Jazz saxophonist, Tom Braxton established a reputation for funky groove driven music with his last two CDs: 'Bounce' and 'Imagine This'. 'Endless highway' and 'That Wayman Smiles' continue in that vein. 'Soul Purpose' has a mellow soulful feel and 'Home Sweet Home' is equally laid-back but has a dreamier vibe. The 80's Soul infused vocal track 'Ventura Highway' adds a different dimension, but this album is consistent throughout with Braxton's tenor sax sounding both soulful and highly melodic and easy on the ear.

GABRIELA ANDERS – BOSSA BELEZA CD £16.95
Great to hear Gabriela's classy and sultry vocals again. 8 covers including Brazilian gems like 'Aqua De Beber', 'Amapala' and 'Dindi' suit her sensual approach, whilst an interesting take on Earth Wind & Fire's 'September' and the Rolling Stones' 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction'. Anders penned the gentle 'Fantasia', the subtle 'Siempre Asi' and the upbeat 'Sexy Ride'. 'Bossa Beleza' is a pleasant and welcome return.

MATT BIANCO – HIFI BOSSA NOVA CD £13.95
This charming album has a bright optimistic feel to it. Love the title song with its gorgeous flute led percussion break. Breezy songs like 'Always On My Mind 'Natural' and 'Lost In You' are simplicity personified. The soft Latin percussion provides a subtle and complimentary backdrop. Also check the atmospheric 'Matt's Chill' and the wonderful 'Angel Divine'. This album will appeal especially to those that enjoyed the recent Swing Out Sister album.

SEAN HORSEY – ROUTE 44 CD £11.95
UK based saxman Horsey has hooked up with Oli Silk to release an independent and strong smooth set of grooves. The album works best on the tracks like the firing 'Fusion Union' and the opener 'Aruba'. On 'Rio Grande', the slightly Latin tinged Jazz Funk continues to flow effortlessly. 'Aurora' is a mid-tempo highly melodic tune, which Horsey's straightforward tenor sax playing respects. There is a simple joyfulness to the playing and to the grooves that is highly infectious. Silk's keyboard work especially enjoyable especially one electric piano.

PETER WHITE – GOOD DAY CD £15.95
This is Peter's first album of 'new' material for quite a few years. 'Good Day' will please his legion of fans who appreciate his relaxed playing, tight grooves and strong melodies. His optimistic 'sound' shines on cuts like 'Just Give Me A Chance'. The lilting '(Un)forgiven has a delicate melodic beauty that White excels with. 'Mission 2 Mars' ups the tempo with a solid groove. His exquisite touch is evident throughout but check 'Bright', 'Always Forever' and 'Good Day'. A welcome return.

NAJEE – MIND OVER MATTER CD £16.95
Excellent return from the (now) veteran Smooth Jazz saxman, Najee knows how to deliver a balanced mix of contemporary Jazz grooves, funky beats and Soul tunes. On the Soul side, Gary Taylor gives an exemplary vocal on the beautiful 'Move Over Carolina' and Eric Benet joins the party on the more current 'We Gone Ride' that has hints of D'Angelo/ Musiqsoulchild to its vibe. 'Mind Over Matter' has an infectious smoothly funky groove, whilst 'One More thing' has hints of Grover to the overall feel. 'Forever And A Day After' sees Najee especially gentle soprano sax glide over this lilting slowie. 'Stolen Glances' is a very smooth workout, both Najee's alto and the support provided by Jeff Lorber and full rhythm section. This Najee's finest for sometime and 'Mind Over Matter' is one of the finest Smooth Jazz albums of 2009.

BRIAN BROMBERG – IT IS WHAT IT IS CD £15.95
Master bass player (electric and upright) is equally at home on all styles of contemporary Jazz. This album sees him on both electric and acoustic and he plays all the guitar melodies/solos too (on a modified bass). Listen to his work on the pacy 'Love Shack' – hints of Stanley Clarke and Louis Johnson about his various bass work here. The title song kicks things into gear with a stomping Jazz Funk cut with Randy Brecker outstanding on trumpet. 'Mr Miller' has a great groove and horn fill and 'Elephants On Ice Skates' is more bass player's heaven. 'Slap Happy' speaks for itself. Great stuff.

DEE BROWN – A LITTLE ELBOW ROOM CD £14.95
Mellow Smooth Jazz from this accomplished guitarist. Dee Brown's playing is in a similar style to George Benson or Norman Brown. His playing is clean highly melodic, fluid and sensitive – try the slowish mid-tempo 'Believe It Can' or the understated 'More Than Real'. The funkier 'A Little Elbow room' gives Dee the opportunity to display his dexterity on the guitar as does the slower 'True Reality' and 'It's Just A Good Thing'. The vocal 'Just Say I Do' and 'and 'I Don't Know' add a more soulful dimension. Aficionados of Benson/ Norman Brown should enjoy Dee Brown's approach to guitar playing.

ANDREW NEU – SOMETHING NEU CD £14.95
Saxophonist Neu is a new name, but this highly pleasant Smooth Jazz album should change all that. Neu is an accomplished alto player; he has a free flowing sound with a good ear for the core melody. On 'South By Southwest', you can hear a Boney James influence in the phrasing and the silky delivery, whereas the funkier 'The Nut' Neu switches to tenor and has echoes of Grover. 'Chez Cool' hits a fine smooth groove, whilst the quality of Neu's songwriting shines through on the title song. Bobby Caldwell sings the ballad 'Next Time I Fall In Love' and adds a West Coast soft Rock vibe to the song. Production chores are shared by Neu himself with Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb, and Gerald Veasley all of whom guest on the album. The presence of a full horn section adds another dimension to the album's overall sound.

JONATHAN FRITZEN VIP CD £12.95
Swedish Smooth Jazz pianist is a new name to us, but this his second album is a finely sculptured selection of highly melodic slick tunes likes 'VIP' with its catchy theme and infectious riff. 'Stay' and 'If You Want It' have a vocal chorus. 'Standard' and 'In Motion have similar laid-back vibe, held together by simple melodies played by piano. 'The New Vibe' is a nice mellow groover and on 'Coast Line' Michael Lington's sax shares the spotlight with Fritzen. The production is clean and the relaxed feel runs through this classy album from start to finish.

JESSY J – TRUE LOVE CD £16.95
Outstanding set from this fine young sax player, after the brilliance of last year's best Smooth Jazz set 'Tequila Moon', Jessy succeeds in sustaining the quality'. 'Forever' is a beautiful slow track on which her soulful playing shines, but this track is surpassed the absolutely fabulous 'Somewhere In A Dream' on which her sax is the smoothest and sweetest ever. 'Tropical Love' has seamless smooth feel to the groove and there are favourable Grover/ Boney James comparisons. On 'True Love', Jessy's mastery of a simple yet gorgeous melody is there for all to hear. Jessy includes a couple of Latin gems like the mid/uptempo dnace 'Morning Of The Carnival'. 'Bailal' combines the Latin spirit with some fast and fluent sax play and 'Jessy's Blues' is another fine smooth tune. On second or third hearing this album is stronger than its predecessor. Awesome – Smooth Jazz album of 2009…so far.

PAUL TAYLOR – BURNIN CD £15.95
Follow-up to 'Ladies Choice' – his best to date ?, 'Burnin' has a retro feel with hints of Motown especially on cuts like 'Revival' and the handclapped beat of 'Groove Shack'. The title song, the early 80's inspired groove of 'Side Pocket' and the Grover sounding 'It's Like That' are very strong smooth and funky grooves. 'Juke Joint' and a fine cover of War's 'Me And Baby Brother' keep the vibe going. Paul plays mostly tenor rather than alto or soprano sax and supported by a tight band including Michael White or drums, production is by Rex Rideout and Barry Eastmond.

RICK BRAUN – ALL IT TAKES CD £15.95
Master of the Smooth Jazz trumpet releases a more relaxed set of grooves than usual. The beautifully melodic 'Christiane' is case in point, and his playing conveys the feeling perfectly. 'Tijuana Dance' is a more typical upbeat smooth groove. The title song is a moody piece with Braun muting the trumpet, as is the slow dirge like 'I Got Your Back' 'She's The One' is another fine piece of upbeat Smooth Jazz, whilst the 80's style Jazz Funk dancer is full of infectious guitar and bass riffs with Rick blowing cool. This fine album, co-produced by Rick and Phillipe Saisse takes a play or two to hit home, but this is the finest Braun solo album for a couple of years.

On the smooth side check the funky 'JB' and the flute led Latin tinged 'Marimba Island'. Even smoother grooves 'Light As Air', 'Block Party', 'Funk It Up', 'Block Party' and the slower vocal 'Say It Baby' are also on point. This album is consistently good, with strong meloides and hooks plus a groove to it. Quality Smooth Jazz.

TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON – MORE TO SAY CD £16.95
Highly respected drummer delivers a fine album featuring some of Jazz's finest contemporary musicians. Terri mixes many jazzy orientated styles on a selection that ranges from the cover of Angie Stone's 'Everyday' to the smouldering Jazz vocal of 'Imagine This' with guest vocalist Nancy Wilson. 'Sherwood Forest' is a slowish Funk workout with George Duke and Christian McBride on top form. Les McCann's bluesy vocal lights up the dirge like 'Hold Me Again'. The smooth 'Mesmerized' is graced by Walter Beasley's warm sax and Chuck Loeb clean guitar playing. Strong album.

BILL ORTIZ – FROM WHERE I STAND CD £13.95
Bill Ortiz is a fine trumpeter from the San Francisco and is a member of the Santana group.   This varied selection has that languid west coast feel to its jazzy grooves.  The two vocal tracks are strong, especially the groove laden ‘Slip Into This’ and the 80’s style mid-tempo gem ‘Ease My Mind’.  ‘Ayejaya’ is a nice smooth Fusion groove as are ‘Full Circle’, ‘Word Play’ and ‘Little Sister Little Brother’.  Ortiz has a rich full tone to his playing, which gives his solos a soulful feel.

ALEXANDER ZONJIC – DOIN THE D CD £16.95
Excellent Smooth Jazz/ 80's Fusion album from the veteran flautist, Alexander shows a deft touch. Check the Fusion 'Top Down' that has writer/ co-producer Jeff Lorber's stamp all over it, as does the slower 'Tongue Twister'. 'Passion Island' has a Latiny vibe with Chieli Minucci and Bob James guesting. The only vocal cut 'Undun' features Maysa and is gorgeous. Rick Braun stars on 'Tourista' and 'Doin The D' is a driving more funky affair. There is even a nice smooth take on 'Little Sunflower' with Kenny G sharing the solo spotlight. Zonjic's flute playing is superb. Excellent stuff.

BOB BALDWIN – LOOKING BACK CD £15.95
A retrospective looks back at Bob's 20 years+ as a solo artist. Really like his take on Kool And The Gang's 'Summer Madness' with James Robinson on vocals. 'Summer Breeze' is given a pleasant instrumental workout. Two tracks feature Will Downing: his wordless vocals grace 'Wishing You Were Here' primarily instrumental with a soulful sax from Marion Meadows and the gorgeous ballad 'I Only Do Those Things'. The smooth Soul of 'Last Call' is a warm mid-tempo and features a fine vocal from Zoiea. The late Grover Washington Jr adds her distinctive sax to the 80's sounding 'It's Not Enuf'.

The rounded sound much like Lin Rountree or a mellow Rick Braun glide across the smooth grooves of tracks like the title cut 'Bloom' and the funkier 'Seing Set'. The gorgeous laid-back 'Sycamore Soul' is a treat and the aptly titled 'Brooklyn Bounce' has an upbeat groove. Try also the head nodder 'Uptown Drive' or the mellow 'Before I Go'. Excellent Smooth Jazz album from this in-demand session guitarist, 'Feeling It' is his second album. It is packed with relaxed grooves played by a full band with bass and drums. Smooth Jazz pianist Johnson has always had something else in his musical locker. He mixes up strong smooth grooves with fine Soul tunes and a funkier Fusion tinged edge. 'Poetically Justified' features four strong Soul style cuts, two feature Maysa's sultry tones ('Master Of My Heart' and the jazzier 'Hold On'). Two feature 80's Soul legend Miles Jaye and will appeal to his fans ('Capice' and 'Heaven'). Interspersed with the Soul are some fine instrumentals like 'Chillaxin', 'Ellicott City' and good covers of the Jacksons' 'This Place and John Legend 'Use to Love You'. VARIOUS ARTISTS – SOUND OF JAZZ FM 2009 VOL 1 DOUBLE CD £13.95
The second Smooth Jazz/ Soul compilation from the revived Jazz Fm label and this is an absolute corker of a compilation. 288 songs some not available elsewhere such as Mario Biondi's 'This Is What You Are' or hard to find like Kevin Whalum's 'Wonder Maze'. Bobby Lyle's 'Been So Long' and Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson's 'Never Wanna Say Goodnight' are hard to get on CD too. You have classics like Mystic Merlin's 'Just can't Give You Up', Ronnie Laws' 'Every Generation' and Pieces Of A Dream 'Warm Weather'. This volume is a well constructed selection of grooves.

KYLE EASTWOOD – METROPOLITAN CD £16.95
This superb Jazz album, shows why Clint's son has established a fine reputation as a bass player and jazz musician. This very Herbie Hancock sounding set traverses many different styles of Jazz. 'Metropolitan' is a powerful trumpet led, part scat vocal atmospheric upbeat cut. Eastwood infuses 'Hot Box' with a Headhunters like bass part. 'Samba De Paris' is a fine Freddie Hubbard like cut and very jazzy, whilst 'Le Balai' has a soulful Jazz Funk groove. On the vocal side, the gritty 'Live For Life' adds a dose of Funk. Exceptional.

SPYRO GYRA – DOWN THE WIRE CD £16.95
Veteran Jazz Funk/ Smooth Jazz group have recorded their best album in ages.  The title cut is a fine 80’s style Fusion cut, whereas ‘Island Pond’ is a lilting jazzier cut. Jazzier still, ‘the Tippin Point’ is a sublime vehicle for Jay Beckenstein’s expressive sax solo.  ‘Ice Mountain’ sounds like classic Spyro Gyra c. 1983 and has lovely Latin tinges.  The Latin flavour returns on ‘La Zona Rosa’ – another excellent instrumental.  ‘What It Is’ returns to the 80’s Jazz Fusion vein and ‘Unspoken’ is more reminiscent of their smoother groove. For something different try the Tower Of Power like ‘Make It Mine’.  Spyro Gyra at their best.

U-NAM – UNANIMITY CD £16.95
Guitar man U-nam sounds like a younger George Benson especially on the storming Jazz Funk groove of ‘Shine On’.  The title song sees u-Nam in full guitar flow.  ‘Soul Boy Reincarnation’ is a strong Fusion cut featuring Najee as well as U-Nam prominently.  U-Nam bases ‘(Hang On) I’m Comin' on the similarly titled Sam and Dave tune, whilst the authentic and rousing cover of Martha Reeves’ ‘Dancin In The Street’ features Marva King on vocals.  U-Nam is an exceptional guitarist as the breakneck paced ‘U Could Make It Happen’ and equally fast ‘Soul..ism’ proves.  ‘Viva la Revolucion’ adds a different slant.

JACKIEM JOYNER – LIL MAN SOUL CD £16.95
Talented young Smooth Jazz saxman returns with his follow up to the popular ‘Babysoul’.  The relaxed grooves like ‘J Street’ flow allowing him space to express the melody and to improvise.  On ‘Where’s The Love Gone’, Jackiem shows a mellow plaintive style to his playing, equally laid-back is the more joyful vocal ‘Let Me Love You’.  ‘Step With Me’ has that compelling stepping groove that was prevalent a couple of years back.  But it is Jackiem melody writing that impresses – check the pretty ‘When The Time Is Right’ or the closing ‘When We Come Together’ where the notes simply pour from the horn.. A nice set will enhance the young man’s reputation within the Smooth Jazz community.

RICHARD ELLIOT – ROCK STEADY CD £16.95
Smooth Jazz sax legend returns with his first solo set for sometime.  With Richard what you hear is what you get, his expressive tenor sax has Soul and the grooves are smoothly funky.  Cuts like ‘Straight Up’, the heavier ‘Spindrift’ and the aptly titled ‘Retro Soul’ are typical Elliot sounding instrumentals.  Strong smooth interpretations of ‘Rock Steady’, ‘Move On Up’ and ‘Keep On Truckin’ add familiarity of song to the sax man’s magic. The production is clear and compliments the smoothness of Richard’s playing and the warmth of the grooves.  High quality stuff. CANDY DULFER – FUNKED UP CD £16.95
Candy has carved a niche for funky Smooth Jazz/ Fusion and ‘Funked Up’ will endorse that reputation and is her best album for ages.  Cuts like ‘First In Line’, the head nodder ‘Finger Poppin’ and the smoother ‘CD 101.9’ are fine grooves.    ‘Roppongi Panic’ and ‘On And On’ are equally fine groove laden cuts. Check also the jazzier ‘Be Cool’. The gentle ‘Don’t Go’ and highly melodic and ultra mellow ‘Still I Love You’ add a different dimension.

GREGG KARUKAS – GK CD £16.95
Gregg Karukas' delicate piano style is perfectly suited to relaxed Smooth Jazz. On grooves like 'Daylight' and the sublime 'Manhattan' Gregg is joined by an unnamed sax player and by Michael O'Neill on guitar. 'Napa Road' has an 80's Fusion feel complete with horn section. Similar in feel is foot tapper 'Coyote Party'. Jessy J adds her wistful sax to the laid-back 'Soul Kisses' Tracks like 'Jamba Samba' – love Ricardo Silveira's guitar solo - and 'Floating In Bahia' have subtle and smooth Latin textures, the latter features Rick Braun. Overall, 'GK' is a fine wholly instrumental Smooth Jazz album.

CHUCK LOEB – BETWEEN 2 WORLD CD £16.95
Smooth Jazz guitarist Chuck Loeb proves his versatility on this broad selection of relaxed Jazz grooves. Whilst undeniably smooth, Chuck explores other parts of his musical persona. 'Let's Go' has a Larry Carlton type of feel, whilst 'Mittens' swings softly with Chuck in particularly eloquent form supported some excellent trumpet and sax work from Till Bronner and Eric Marienthal respectively. 'Let's Play' has a Benson feel – like one of his jazzier CTI pieces. Carmen Cuesta adds a sultry vocal to the Brazilian tinged 'So Tinha de Que Ser Com Voce'.

PAUL BROWN AND MARC ANTOINE – FOREIGN EXCHANGE CD £16.95
This fine selection of relaxed smooth grooves is a great backdrop for the guitar playing of Paul Brown and Marc Antoine. Wholly instrumental, slick grooves like 'Wine Night, the clipped rhythm of 'Brother Earl' and the title track flow seamlessly. It is however the quality of the simple melodies that stands out – 'What About Bob' illustrates this – nothing fancy or complex, yet the music is most enjoyable. Paul Brown's production is as easy on the ear as ever; his style almost defines Smooth Jazz. Paul's playing is exquisitely smooth too, whilst Marc Antoine adds a touch of French/Spanish flavours too – check 'French Connection' and 'Bridges Of Paris'.

RECOMMENDED NEW SMOOTH JAZZ - MARCH 2009

NILS – UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL CD £15.95
Nils has a deserved reputation among Smooth Jazz fans for producing albums of the highest quality. This, his third will please those who appreciated his first two. Grooves like 'Jazz Cruise'. 'Getting Hooked' and the breezy 'Happy To C U' are typically West Coast style smooth tunes. Vocal choruses add another dimension to 'Soul Mates' and '60 10 29'. Nils' playing shines on the mellower 'Catalina' and again on the lovely melody on 'Until I See You Again'. Try also the pleasant 'East Bay'. The use of a real drummer (Ricky Lawson) and bass guitar give the album a vibrant feel that a similar set with programming would not have.

PIECES OF A DREAM – SOUL INTENT CD £16.95
Pieces Of A Dream sustain their consistently high quality Smooth Jazz albums with this entirely instrumental set. After 30 years making music together, drummer Curtis Harmon and keyboard maestro James K Lloyd have an almost telepathic understanding. Grooves like 'Sway On' and 'Soul Intent' and 'Vision Accomplished' are right on that PoD vibe. 'Step On It' is a catchy foot tapper, 'Stand Up' gets funkier and 'Things Are Looking Up' has a 'Mister Magic' feel to the groove. 'Soul Intent' is a real treat for their fans and fans of Smooth jazz.

JEFF KASHIWA – BACK IN THE DAY CD £16.95
Popular Smooth Jazz sax player releases a set of ultra smooth mainly instrumental grooves. 'You're The One' and 'When It Feels Good' combine accessible melodies with straight forward head nodding grooves. There is a welcome feel good factor to these tunes with cuts like 'Meet You The There' and 'Free Flyer' have an optimistic vibe. 'The Attraction' has a wonderful melody and exemplifies Jeff's fine tuned ear for the melody. 'Back In The Day' is in the mainstream of Smooth Jazz and appeals primarily to lovers of that genre.

ERIC ESSIX – BIRMINGHAM CD £15.95
Guitar player Eric Essix records his first album in years – and it is a superb set of Smooth Jazz grooves. The title song, the highly melodic and percussive 'Hang Time' and the smouldering 'Big Valley' that builds up a head of smooth steam are among the highlights. An excellent smooth interpretation of John Handy's Jazz Funk 'Hard Work' gives the classic a new lease of life. Eric's playing possesses an exquisite clarity to it – hints in style of Grant Green. Must also mention the sax work of Kelley O'Neal and it is nice to have a 'real' drummer on board in this case Lil John Roberts.

DARREN RAHN – TALK OF THE TOWN CD £15.95
Highly melodic Smooth Jazz stylist, Darren Rahn is quickly establishing himself as a serious player on the scene. His sax playing is reminiscent of Euge Groove, Steve Cole or Warren Hill. This selection of self-penned melodies and Soul/ pop classics suits that style effortlessly. Of the covers check Chaka's 'Whatcha Gonna Do For Me', Hall and Oates 'I Can't Go For That' and Patrice Rushen's 'Forget Me Nots'. Of the originals try the easy on the ear groove of 'With you By My Side' featuring guitarist Tim Bowman. Bob James adds his delicate keyboards to understated 'Easy Does It' and Jeff Lorber's funky touch ignites the slowish 'Secret Crush'. The standout is the funky Smooth Jazz opener 'Talk Of Two Cities'.

DOMINIC AMATO – FRESH FROM THE GROOVE CD £15.95
New name to us, saxman Dominic Amato has a fresh optimistic sound. Cuts like 'Exciting Times', 'Nico's Smile' and the driving 'Fresh From The Groove' have a vibrancy all their own. 'Jamaica' has a Caribbean/ Latin feel with Dominic in good form over the catchy groove. 'Out Of The Gate' continues the feel good factor, whilst 'Jazzy's Flow' slips into a mellow groove accompanied by a simple melody. 'Letsjuschill' is a nice slowed down groove.

PHILIPPE SAISSE – PHILIPPE SAISSE CD £16.95
Classy Smooth Jazz pianist releases a typically stylish and largely instrumental album. Smooth grooves like the jaunty 'From Nowhere To Now Here' and the highly melodic 'The Rover' showcase his talents perfectly. 'Roppongi Blues' adds a jazzier flavour. 'Billy's Blues' has a Larry Carlton type feel. It is the more straightforward Smooth Jazz such as 'Topanga Moon Dance' that suits his playing. The supporting cast includes appearances from Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Marc Antoine and Jeff Golub.

BONEY JAMES SEND ONE YOUR LOVE CD £15.95
Boney returns with a romantic Smooth Jazz album that has a very soulful feel, not just from the material covered, but due to the overall vibe. Boney's playing is exquisite and highly melodic especially on Stevie Wonder's 'Send One your Love' and the groove driven Barry White classic 'I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby'. It is the original songs that are most inspirational such as the lovely, smooth and soulful 'Wanna Show U Sumthin'. 'Hold On Tight' is a vintage Boney instrumental and 'Butter' keeps that magic going. The king of Smooth Jazz sax is back!

WALTER BEASLEY FREE YOUR MIND CD £15.95
Probably Walter's best album for somewhile. His playing is fluid as ever and the grooves solid, but there is a greater variety in styles than of late. 'Steady As She Goes' is Walter at his best, whilst his vocal on 'Love Calls' is soulful ably supported by Lynne Fiddmont. Try also the funkier 'Oh Yeah', but it on the jazzier (Fusion) 'Message To Mark' and the bright, breezy and slightly Brazilian tinged 'Dukezilla' that he hits the spot. 'Barrack's Grove is a fine smooth groove too with Walter's playing right upfront.

KIM WATERS I WANT YOU LOVE IN THE SPIRIT OF MARVIN CD £15.95
Kim Waters releases a typically relaxed set of quality Smooth Jazz grooves inspired by the music of Marvin Gaye. The album includes 2 Marvin covers an excellent take on 'I Want You' with Vivian Green supplying vocals. 'Distant Lover' is a nice smooth interpretation of a Marvin song. 9 other instrumentals including 'Smooth Sailing', 'Some Dreams Come True' and 'Groove With Me' will appeal to Kim's existing fans and lovers of strong Smooth Jazz., as whilst Marvin provides the inspiration this is still very much a Kim Waters set.

RANDY CRAWFORD AND JOE SAMPLE NO REGRETS CD £12.95
This highly polished vocal Jazz set, consisting of fine interpretations of standards and covers is beautifully crafted, arranged and produced. Randy has rarely sounded better and her powerful voice glides gracefully across all the tracks like 'Every Day I Have The Blues' and 'Today I Sing The Blues'. Standout is the take of the Staple Singers' 'Respect Yourself' which adds a funky groove, whilst 'Lead Me On' is a heavy slow blues. Throughout Joe Sample's expressive piano takes most of the instrumental solos on piano and shows just what a master of the instrument he still is. This straight ahead Jazz set with a slight blues tinge is masterful.

ALTHEA RENE NO RESTRICTIONS CD £13.95
Excellent Smooth Jazz album from this exceptional flautist, Althea's music has a more funky edge than most smooth albums. Take the title song and 'Ladies Night Out' two strong instrumental grooves, which suit Althea's full flute playing style. 'Come My Way' is a mid-tempo vocal Soul/Jazz tune as is the mellow 'Never Givin Up'. She gives a lovely spin to the Rose Royce ballad 'Wishing On A Star' and to the standard 'Summertime'. Her expressive flute playing dominates the most of the tracks.

JASON MILES 2 GROVER WITH LOVE CD £15.95
The second volume of Jason's tribute to Grover Washington Jr focuses on some less familiar Grover tunes. 'Summer Nights' captures the spirit of the man's sax playing perfectly. 'Reed Seed' is a fine slice of laid-back Fusion, whilst Oliver Nelson's 'Stolen Moments' is given a smooth yet jazzy working with Jason on Hammond organ. Maysa adds her distinctive vocals to a beautiful slow rendition of 'Mr Magic'. Equally stunning is the cover of 'Moonstreams'. Miles' arrangements are tasteful and reverential staying true to the album's concept. Guest players include Jay Beckenstein, Kim Waters and the excellent Andy Snitzer.

The vocal cut 'Feel the Love' is a delicious riff-laden affair that floats with along with grace. Can't Get Enough' has the catchiest piano melody (echoes of Jazz Fm heyday). On which Nate is joined by talented guitar man Jay Soto. 'What's Happenin' and 'Give It Up' are fine Smooth grooves that are complimented by the high quality production sound.

GORDON JAMES INJOY CD £14.95
Trumpeter Gordon James is a new name to us, but if this set co-produced by James Lloyd (Pieces Of A Dream and Bob Baldwin) is anything to go by we should hear more. Mellow Smooth Jazz, his playing is rich like Rick Braun's with a touch of Herb Alpert. 'In Joy' is typical of the album understated slow/mid-tempo grooves with the warmth of James' fine trumpet playing riding the groove. Roberta Flack's 'Back Together Again' is covered well, retaining the vibe of the original, whilst 'One Nation Under A Groove' is given the Smooth Jazz interpretation and it works!. 'Drivin' is a funky Smooth Jazz tune in a Rick Braun style as is the head nodder 'G's House'. 'Sunshine' is a wonderfully atmospheric song and 'Keep It Real' is slowish funky tune.

Of the new cuts check the upbeat 'Life In The Fast Lane' and the riff laden 'Bada Bing' that uses real drums and sees Koz on tenor sax. NEW SMOOTH JAZZ - AUGUST 2008

SHILTS JIGSAW LIFE CD £14.95
Ex Down to The Bone tenor sax player releases his third solo album. If you like instrumental sax led Smooth Jazz then this consistent and solid CD will appeal to you. At times Shilts' tenor playing resembles Grover rich and soulful. 'Piece By Piece' illustrates this point perfectly. Shilts really goes for it on the funkier tracks like 'Back On The Hudson', whose full-on groove hints of our man's DTTB roots. Lovers of the melodic side of Smooth Jazz will love 'Listen Up', the gentle “A Promise Is A Promise' and 'Smile For Me'.

PLUNKY DRIVE IT £13.95
Saxman who was one of the main men behind 70s Afro Funk group Oneness Of Juju and he returns with a mixed bag of tracks that touches Soul, Funk Jazz, Hip Hop even hints of Go Go. The Fusion title song is a superb slice of Jazz Funk. A slower take on Oneness' 'Every Way But Loose' is an interesting twist on the classic. Equally intriguing is the re-working of 'African Rhythms' retitled 'Drop African Rhythms'. The album works best on the mellower grooves like 'More Than Meets The Eye', 'A Favourite Place and 'Where There Is Love'. If you like a broad selection of jazzy styles then 'Drive It' will do the trick.

NEW SMOOTH JAZZ - JUNE 2008

NICK COLIONNE NO LIMITS CD £14.95
Nick Colionne's guitar playing has been compared to George Benson and from style and tone standpoint you can hear why. Cuts like 'No Limits', the mellow 'The Big Windy Cat' and the ultra fast 'Godfather J' are uptempo funky/smooth gems. 'Steppin Back' has that steppers feel, whilst 'Headin Wes Before Dawn' takes a melodic route in paying homage to Wes Montgomery. There are 3 vocal cuts and whilst Colionne is no Will Downing, his crooning style works on the laid-back 'Melting Into You'. This is a fine exhibition of Smooth Jazz guitar.

DIXON RHYNE PROJECT REINVENTION CD £12.95
Rob Dixon is a sax player not unlike Karl Denson in approach to the instrument. Melvin Rhyne is a veteran Hammond organist who played with Wes Montgomery! This collaboration sounds like a Prestige Soul Jazz organ set circa 1970. 'Repub Club' is a mid-tempo burner with Dixon in especially fine form, whereas the dirge like Funk of 'Mel's Groove is slower still. The swinging 'Carousel' is a fine slice of organ Jazz as is the kicking title song. 'Fantastic Prizes' and 'Mind's Eye' are fine Soul Jazz pieces. The organ playing is clean, smooth and not too heavy, whilst Rob Dixon's sax playing is soulful, warm and deep. Highly recommended.

RAGAN WHITESIDE CLASS AXE CD £13.95
This contemporary Smooth Jazz set will appeal not only to Smooth Jazz aficionados, but will also appeal to Soul fans as the vocal cuts - of which there are several are sublime. Ragan sounds not unlike Bobbi Humphrey in her approach to the flute. The grooves maintain a relaxed yet funky vibe throughout as illustrated by 'Funktuation'. 'So Glad' and 'In Love' are fine vocal cuts but it is the mid-tempo (quasi 2 steppers) 'How Do You Know', 'Break Me Down' and 'Options' that hit the bullseye. Her wispish vocals combine well with the flute. Ragan is a class act and this will be one of the strongest Smooth Jazz reviewed here this year.
