RAGAN WHITESIDE CLASS AXE CD £13.95
This contemporary Smooth Jazz set will appeal not only to Smooth Jazz aficionados, but will also appeal to Soul fans as the vocal cuts - of which there are several are sublime. Ragan sounds not unlike Bobbi Humphrey in her approach to the flute. The grooves maintain a relaxed yet funky vibe throughout as illustrated by 'Funktuation'. 'So Glad' and 'In Love' are fine vocal cuts but it is the mid-tempo (quasi 2 steppers) 'How Do You Know', 'Break Me Down' and 'Options' that hit the bullseye. Her wispish vocals combine well with the flute. Ragan is a class act and this will be one of the strongest Smooth Jazz reviewed here this year.
SEKOU BUNCH THE NEXT LEVEL CD £14.95
Bassman Sekou Bunch has recorded with countless headline artists and is revered in Smooth Jazz and Fusion circles as one of the finest bass players around. This 11 track set incorporates many styles he has enhanced over the years. From the cover of Ramsey Lewis' 'Sun Goddess' featuring Stanley Clarke and Rodney Franklin to the take on Isleys 'Smooth Sailin' with vocals from Angela Wimbush and sax from Boney James, this album just hits the spot. The twist on 'Take Five/In There' is inventive. Tributes to Luther on 'Essence' and to George Howard on 'Everything I Miss At Home' are complimentary to these two giants of our music. 'Ploom Ploom Ploom' adds a little Latin spice and 'Funkability' touches the Fusion tip. A strong all-round set that features many guests including George Duke, Everette Harp and Bobby Broom.
WAYMAN TISDALE REBOUND CD £14.95
The best album from Wayman for sometime, the master bassman plays a selection of fine smooth grooves like 'Rebound (that features Dave Koz) and 'Front Runna'. 'One On One' is a funkier piece as is the slower 'The Turnaround'. Toby Keith add soulful vocals to the album on a pleasant version of Barry White's 'Never Never Gonna Give You Up. Tisdale's bass is to the fore but this album is a strong Smooth Jazz set with a couple of Soul cuts too.
MARK ALLEN FELTON I DO IT FOR LOVE CD £11.95
Saxophonist's approach to the soprano is reminiscent of Grover Washington Jr at times. Dreamy mellow cuts like 'For You' and 'Love Me' add a touch of romanticism; - a feel which his playing is well suited It is however, when Mark shares the limelight with vocalists such as Makeda on the mid tempo groover 'Do It' that the album reaches its pinnacle. Also check 'I Need You' on which En Vogue's Terry Ellis add a sultry vocal. 'Love's Callin' and 'Love Jones' sustain the mellow vibe. This is a consistent and consistently tuneful set.
DANNY LERMAN MEOW BABY CD £13.95

It is however the funkier smooth cuts like 'The First Time' and 'Meow Baby', where the groove takes over that stand out.
