TRIBE – REBIRTH CD £14.95 (very ltd) DBL LP £19.95
Brilliant and accessible reunion from the spiritual jazz tribe label guys Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin and Marcus Belgrave. 'Ride' is a great funky jazz, 'Living In a new Day', 'Glue Finger' and their version of 'Vibes from The Tribe' are very compelling. Many of the cuts are slow brooding jazz Funk grooves like the update of 'Vibes From The Tribe' and the heavier spacey 'Son Of Tribe' (ala Eddie Henderson). Check the groove driven 'Jazz On The Run' with its flowing bass and fender lines. The last track 'Where Am I' has a serene beauty carried by the understated grooves and solos and topped by a sublime female vocal. Whilst rooted in the Spiritual side of Jazz, this set will appeal also to lovers of Jazz Funk.
Great Spiritual Jazz.
DEEP JAZZ – HEAVEN AND EARTH CD £13.95/ LP £13.95
Excellent Jazz album from Germany, part vocal but mainly instrumental, the album is reminiscent of mid 60’s Blue Note. Even the sleeve is similar to a Reid Miles design. Includes a superb version of Coltrane’s ‘Naima’ and the ‘Maiden Voyage’ inspired ‘Orange Flower’ whose flute lead gives the piece its atmospheric feel. ‘Black Tiger’ is a fine waltz paced vocal, and try also the title song, which mixes that Blue Note sound with a Dee Dee Bridgewater like vocal. ‘Red Smoke’ is a heavier Jazz piece.

PHIL RANELIN – REMINISCIENCE LIVE CD £14.95
Phil Ranelin (Tribe) recorded these 8 tracks 'live' between 2002 and 2005. They are the modern day equivalent of the classic Tribe label from the 70's. The album consists of 3 covers and 5 originals. Deep Jazz grooves like 'Think On A Groove' and 'Shades Of Dolphy' mix great versions of Miles' 'Solar', the standard 'Nature Boy' and a wonderful led version of Ellington's 'Caravan'.
JOSE JAMES – BLACK MAGIC CD £11.95
Second album from the Outstanding Jose, whose brilliantly expressive voice has graced recent releases from Nicola Cone and Timo Lassy. 'Black Magic' takes a couple of plays to really appreciate and is more soul oriented than his debut. 'Promise In Love' and 'Greater Good' are nice soulful mid tempo 's with horn backing, 'Lay You Down' has a D'Angelo feel to it, and 'Save Your Love For Me' is a nice beat ballad. The more acoustic jazzier 'Touch' has great keyboards and 'Warrior' is heavier jazz. Strong album
also recommended 'The Dreamer' CD £11.95

Brenda Boykin’s ‘Love Is in Town’ is s great soul/jazz dancer, Shuya Okino ft Divinti ‘Sine’ and Ralf Gum ft Daniel Thomas ‘Higher High’are good soulful house. Jazz Invaders ‘Day By Day’ is great swinging jazz, Club Des Belugas ‘Un Grao De Areia’ is an afro beat/bossa dancer and Smooth and Turrell ‘Latin Groove’ is just that. Varied and interesting comp to keep you tapping your feet.
VARIOUS ARTISTS – CONTEMPORARY JAZZ CD £11.95/ LP £13.95
Excellent compilation of modern day Jazz dance tracks. Just about every cut is a winner. Bajka adds her unique vocal to Das Goldene Zeitalter ‘A Vision Pt 1’. Wayne Bartlett’s cool vocal take on Horace Silver’s ‘Senor Blues’. From Japan you have Primo And The Groupe’s ‘A Child Runs Free’ whilst The Hi-Fi Orchestra’s ‘Getting Down’ is a fine slice of 60’s style Soul Jazz. Hammond grooves like Cultures Of Rhythm’s easy paced ‘Bodhisvattva Wonderful Sound’, Eli Sunderson’s swinging ‘Rockridge Kids’ and Sugarman 3’s tough ‘Sugar’s Boogaloo’.
QUASIMODE – DAYBREAK JAPANESE CD £29.95
The Japanese Jazz groove supergroup continues to deliver quality danceable music. ‘All Is One’ and ‘Daybreak’ are archetypal Quasimode cuts, whilst the vocal ‘Happy Few’ adds a cooler approach. ‘Relight My Fire’ with its tight horns and full-on groove has more of a Jazz Funk feel. Italian Jazz trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso adds his rich tones to ‘Rules Of The Blood’ which is another pile driver of a Jazz groove. ‘Afro Blue’ is given a contemporary Jazz re-work with China Moses on vocals. Essential for Jazz and Quasimode fans.
INDIGO JAM UNIT – COLLECTIVITY JAPANESE CD £29.95
This excellent set is yet another fine Japanese Jazz album. From the bass led ‘Duffer’ to the Quasimode like ‘Pentagram’, this set is a strong selection of grooves. ‘Masquerade’ is similarly sounding, whereas ‘Sunset’ is beautifully percussive and ‘Rush’ is much heavier with a quasi Strata East/ Black Jazz feel.
PAPIK – RHYTHM OF LIFE CD £16.95
This excellent Italian Jazz album mixes the familiar sounds of Schema with a lighter breezier touch (a la Swing Out Sister or Matt Bianco at their very best) – check ‘Rhythm Of Life’. The Italian Jazz sound surfaces on ‘E La Chiamano Estate’, the upbeat ‘Staying For Good’, the interesting take on Knarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ and ‘Notes Of The Past’. Alan Scaffardi’s vocals echo those of Mario Biondi, especially on the swinging ‘Capture The Sound’ and the finger popping Sinatra-ish ‘Happy Rhymes’. ‘Lady Bug Bossa’ and ‘Summer In Rio’ add a subtle Brazilian flavour’. In these wintery days, this taste of sunshine is most welcome.
TIMO LASSY – ROUND TWO CD £15.95
Timo Lassy is the standout saxophonist with the Five Corners Quintet. This his second album for Ricky Tick contrasts with his debut in that there is a big band sound (of horns) behind him. Josie James guests on two tracks including the superb swinging ‘The More I Look At You’. ‘Fooling Roseatta’ has a 60’s Horace Silver swagger and ‘Backyard Puma’ adds more of Latin tinged Blue Note vibe. ‘Buzz beater Stomp’ has an old school Jazz feel. This is a fine, fine album proving that the Italians and Japanese do not have it all their own way when it comes to great Jazz.
