MAY 2007

JIMI TENOR/KABU KABU

JOYSTONE

Recorded in Helsinki, this album is a joyous mix of Jazz styles from the Funk of ‘Hot Baby’ to the mysterious ‘Arlane’ and menacing ‘Smoking’. The vibe of this album is eclectic as ‘Sunrise’ encapsulates many styles during its 8 minutes. ‘Hermetic Man’ is a breezy jazzy groove, whilst ‘Anywhere Anytime’ floats gently based on a Rhodes piano riff and then builds to a fast jazzy crescendo. The album features members of The Five Corners Quintet.

METROPOLITAN JAZZ

BIRD OF SPRING

Excellent swinging Jazz dance out of France, that grooves in a relaxed vein and grows on you after a few spins. ‘Bird Of Spring’ is a mid-tempo floater a la Blackbyrds/Mizell, whilst ‘Drifting’ has a nu-Soul meets Jazz. ‘Find A Way’ is a bright and breezy cut reminiscent of Koop, where as ‘Escapism’ and ‘Everybody Knows are fine pieces of contemporary European Jazz dance; ‘Swagger and ‘Turned To Clay’ are equally strong Jazz tunes. Overall this is a fine European Jazz set that will appeal to Jazz Funk fans too.

FOUR80EAST

EN ROUTE

Contemporary Fusion band, Four 80 East will appeal to lovers of Down To The Bone or Yada Yada. Sleek grooves like ‘Five By Five’ or the upbeat guitar led ‘Noodle Soup’ are foot tapping beats. ‘Double Down’ hits a heavier atmospheric groove built around an infectious guitar fill and Hammond riff. The title song is a fast groove laden percussive dance cut. Check also the moody mid-tempo cuts like ‘Waterline’ and ‘Closer’.

KEITH ANDERSON

LETS ROLL

Keith Anderson is the sax player with Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor and a similarly funky vibe permeates this excellent CD. ‘Funk Storm’ and ‘Collared Greens’ in particular carry that feel and a real barnstormer they are too, whilst ‘Trance’ is a heavier and slower. ‘Treasure City’ is more melodic yet still funky, and ‘Mr Fela’ infuse a taste of ‘Afrobeat’. On the mellower side check ‘Niagra Falls’ feat Dave Sanborn. At times there is a hint of Grover about Keith’s playing. Features the RH factor band with guest appearances from Marcus Miller, Bernard Wright, Kirk Whalum and Karl Denson!

NATIVE

PRUSSIAN BLUE

Japanese Jazz courtesy of the Infracom label that has a light yet groove driven feel. Cuts like ‘Diva’ and ‘Upstairs’ characterise this easy on the ear style, whilst ‘Prussian Blue’, ‘Beyond The Border’, ‘4 Corners’ and ‘’Step It’ have a harder edge, though the flute/ sax lead rounds the edges nicely. Of the vocal cuts, the strongest is the dreamy ‘A Wish For You’.

One of two albums that capture the magical musicianship of one of the US’ finest self-contained Fusion outfits. The full horns, lush percussion and funky grooves scream out from these performances. Comprises of 22 shorter tracks, but Latin workouts like ‘Low Insider’ and the moody ‘Griers Near’ highlight the tightness of the band. ‘Sabrosona’ touches a Salsa beat on which the percussion and flute stand out, also try the Roy Ayers-ish ‘Lapsang Souchang’ and the funky ‘Great Escape’. Other standouts include ‘Flute Juice’ and the vibes led ‘Hide Where’.

{short description of image}JUNE APRIL WHAT I AM
Inspirational Spiritual Jazz album, brilliantly produced by Teddy Crockett which spans Soul . Jazz and Gospel has some great live instrumentation but the main focus is on April's beautiful crystal clear voice.
Of her originals 'Tick Tock' is a jazzy soul track with some nice trumpet backing reminiscent of Badu and Fertile Ground. 'What I Am' is a big production jazzy gospel and 'Fear Vs Faith' is pure Spiritual jazz with scat vocals and the excellent band really stretching out, whilst 'Weeping Mary' is more freer but still very together. Of the Afro- American Spirituals the breezy and jazzy 'At The Cross' and 'Ready' work best. This album has elements of the kind of thing that appeared on black jazz/strata east in the 70's and makes a refreshing change from today's more formulated music, and what a voice !!

LANU THIS IS MY HOME
'Dis-information' has those fusion qualities that 4 hero & Agent K do so well, which is a mixture of beats & the live touch. 'Mother Earth's' roots lie in Afro Beat in which lyrics have a political slant, but conscious. 'Don't Sleep' has an mid 80's influence which would appeal to more than the broken crowd. Soul is in full swing here on tracks such as 'Runaway' feat. Cherie Mathieson with a nod to Roy Ayers in the vocal arrangement & the ballad 'Let You Glow'. Worth a listen.

More Latin/Jazz magic from Italy’s premier label – Schema. This musical journey touches hard driving Afro-Cuban themes like ‘Antigua’, Blue Note influences such as Horace Silver tinged ‘Cool Plan’ and swinging Latin Jazz such as ‘Lead The Way’. The percussion horns and piano intertwine in a mesmerizing fusion of styles that will appeal to lovers of Nicola Conte’s last set and Gerardo Frisina two recent albums. Strong and consistent.

{short description of image}ROY HARGROVE - DISTRACTIONS

Roys third RH Factor album features some top names , Renee Neufville on vocals, David Fathead Newman on Sax and Flute and Reggie Washington on bass. The vocal highlights are ‘Crazy Race’ a jazzy funky l track that swings, ‘On The One’ a heavy funky groove , ‘Family’ a slower jazzy number (ala Roy Ayers Sunshine)and the funky ‘Cant Stop’. The Instrumentals ‘Kansas City Funk’ and especially ‘Distractions 4’ re also great where they are all really going for it, but its Roy’s trumpet playing that holds the whole thing together and despite D’Angelo and a couple of self indulgent P Funk tracks its still a good album.

{short description of image}ROY HARGROVE - NOTHING SERIOUS

Second (and best) new album from Roy this week is more straight ahead featuring Ronnie Matthews and Slide Hampton amongst others. Title track is a great uptempo latin tinged jazz track with great trumpet and piano. ‘Day In Vienna’ is a good modal dancer, ‘The Gift’ a good mid tempo track that goes through changes, but the highlight is the killer modal jazz dancer ‘Salima’s Dance’, with Roy blowing better than ever, probably the best new jazz track you’ll hear this year. Magnificent.

{short description of image}GROOVE COLLECTIVE – PEOPLE PEOPLE MUSIC MUSIC

Return to form for the Collective who release their best album since the classic ‘We The People’. Check ‘Forgotten Travellers’, the organ led ‘6 for Fred’ plus the Afrobeat ‘DFU’ feat Fred Wesley. The Latin cuts kick hard such as ‘Tito’ and ‘Mambomongo’ and don’t miss the straighter Jazz cuts such as the Hancock cover ‘Speak Like A Child’ that is truly brilliant.

{short description of image}MOTIV - MOTIV

UK jazz band featuring former members of Cymande and Jazz Warriors, produce an interesting album of mainly laid back jazz grooves with a West Indian feel. ‘Next Impressions’ and ‘Beat Drez’ are laid back grooves with sax and trumpet. Covers of ‘The Message’ (especially good) and ‘Brothers On The Slide’
Feature the sweet vocals of Kat (aka Anyah). ‘Return Of The Fro’ is a more fiery track with a driving rhythm and blistering horns, ‘Sure Thing’ is also a good beaty instrumental. There is rap on some tracks from Leon Johnson (ala Guru/Common) which might put some people off, but overall it’s a solid and interesting album well worth checking.

Out of Belgium, this album is a mix of warm soulful grooves and contemporary influences. VISIONEERS - DIRTY OLD HIP HOP

Ignore the title, (and the first track), this is quality jazz funk from Mark Mac of 4 Hero. ‘Running’, ‘The World Is Yours’ and ‘Rollin For The Ride’ are great instrumentals with backing vocals similar in style to a Mizell Prod from the 70’s. ‘Run For Cover’ is a clavinet led inst, ’55 Dollars’ a funky beat with brass and ‘Paul’s Guitar Story’ a guitar led jazz funker. Also check the nice covers of Moe Koffman’s ‘Days Gone By’ (orig on our ‘African Sprits’ album),’and Isaac Hayes breakbeat anthem ‘Ikes Mood’, appropriately titled ‘Dirty Old Bossa Nova’ and the old school hip hop (ala ‘Rappers Delight’/’Kim Tim 3’) ‘Funk Box’.

NEW COOL COLLECTIVE - TRIPPIN'

Dutch Latin/ Afro Latin band deliver their finest album to date. Cuts like the driving ‘Perry’ and the Boogaloo tinged ‘Propeller’ typify their approach, whilst ‘Conga Yeye’ is a percussion led belter. It is the second CD that focuses on Afrobeat that is the real corker, aided by legendary Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. Check the funky ‘One More Time’ with its incessant guitar and bass riffs and the more deliberate dirge like ‘Matoke’.

SCHEMA SEXTET - LOOK OUT
{short description of image}
Recorded in 1999, Schema have re-promoted this album and will enhance the reputation of the label. 'Look Out' has a more of a Hard Bop/ modal Jazz feel than the excellent sets from Gerardo Frisina and Nicola Conte. The title song is blessed with a mellow groove a la Miles' 'So What', whilst the furious 'Agitazione' has a Jazz dance leaning. On the modal side the beautiful 'Before Ten O'Clock' stands out as does the swigning 'Time Was'. 'Lothar' sounds like mid 60's Horace Silver mixing the Hard Bop beat with a Latin feel, and Silver's own 'Preacher' is given a reverential and joyous vibe. Seven or eight outstanding cuts from some of Italy's finest Jazz musicians.

MARK WHITFIELD & PANTHER FT SY SMITH

This set encompasses Jazz Funk, Latin, Soul even Jazz Rock. The two tracks featuring Sy Smith 'Ordinary Love' and 'Runnin Round' is the perfect mid-tempo vehicle for this lady's sensual vocals. The D'Angelo tinged 'Always Up' is another highlight, whilst The Benson-ish 'Isis' adds a jazzier vibe. 'Oblation' and 'Bitter Gift' have a Latin feel accentuated by the understated vocals of Gabriela Anders.

POST MODERN JAZZ FEAT ROY AYERS - LOVE NOT TRUTH
Post Modern Jazz is the brainchild of ex Brand New Heavies man Jim Wellman and heavily features vibes legend Roy Ayers. Many of the cuts were previously recorded by Time And Space in the mid 90's but these are new versions. Check the update of 'Crazy Love Songs' and the awesome 'Good Vibrations'. Vocal duties are handled by Judy La Rose on the jazzy title song (plus several other cuts) and try the kicking Jazz Funk of 'Love Once More'. For lovers of British Jazz Funk a la BNH or Light of The World/early Incognito. '

VARIOUS - HIDDEN BEACH : UNWRAPPED VOL 4

The Hidden Beach label (Jill Scott, Kindred etc) has quickly established a reputation for excellence. The 'Unwrapped' series reaffirms that rep with albums comprising Urban Jazz, contemporary Fusion or the funkier end of Smooth Jazz, call it what you will. Check 'Hate It Or Love It' and '21 Questions' both featuring the keyboard skills of Frank McComb, the JB tinged 'Treat Em Right' or the funky cover of 'Rappers Delight', but this is only a brief synopsis of its great tracks. Superb.

GERARDO FRISINA - THE LATIN KICK
Afro Cuban Jazz of the highest calibre with cuts like 'Gods Of The Yoruba' and 'African Seeds' hitting the bullseye. 'Latin Kick' lives upto its title and has more Latin/Afro Cuban/Brazilian flavours than last year's highly acclaimed 'Hi Note'. Check the Brazilian 'Costo De Que E Bom' or the Bop tinged 'Cohete'. Hubbard's '7th Day' gets a reverential rework keeping the Coltrane feel of the original. Please note the vinyl does include 'Gods Of The Yoruba' - please ask for track listing if unsure.

VARIOUS - FREEDOM JAZZ DANCE 2
Second volume of Quality Italian Jazz is actually better than the first one. Soulstance 'Lead The Way', Dalindeo 'Solfer Lento', Invisible Session 'Heroes Of The Conquest' Quintetto Lo Grego 'Yes And No' and Gerardo Frisina 'Gicas Dance' are all great uptempo instrumentals that represent a 2005 update of the classic Blue Note sound. Luis Ferri 'My Love Samba' is a really nice horn lead semi-vocal Brazilian tinged dancer. Also check S-Tone Inc 'Some Kind Of Blues (jazz mood inst)', and Paolo Fedreghini/Marco Bianchi 'Circus In C Minor' and 'Stars', and whilst Jukka Escola '1974' shows why it's the year of Finnish Jazz, the Italians have given them a good run for their money. Great comp.

RSL - EVERY PRESTON GUILD
Contemporary UK Jazz Fusion has rarely sounded this good. The awesome twelves 'Wesley Guild', the atmospheric 'The Mast' and 'The Magic Of Spain' shine as does the title song with its simmering feel. This is a fantastic set of Jazz grooves. Preston, Lancs getting funky! And jazzy!

OCTOBER 2005
JUKKA ESKOLA - S/T
Trumpeter from the Five Corners Qt produces what could be the Jazz album of the year, heavily influenced by Freddie Hubbard, this is Jazz Fusion at its best and sounds like it could have been recorded Freddie for CTI in the early 70's. '1974' is a great uptempo fusion track. 'Kulo' is more mid tempo with some great fender rhodes and Jukka sounding incredibly like Freddie, 'Duddamdej' and 'Timber Up' have a jazz dance feel to them with great arrangements. This is great throughout and totally essential.

SOULIVE - BREAK OUT
Excellent Hammond Organ led fusion/jazz groove set features archetypal Soulive grooves like 'Reverb' and 'Freedom'. Vocal guests include Chaka Khan on thesingle 'BackAgain'andIvan Neville on both the heavy 'Got Soul' and funky 'Take It Easy'. Funky Jazz ofan exceptional standard that is consistent from start to finish. Also recommended 'Turn It Out' 2CD £14.95

COLONEL RED - BLUE EYE BLAK
Mix of Soul and Broken beats that excels on the title track with its thought provoking lyrics and nice female vocal. 'Gotta Be A Place For Us' is a catchy jazz influenced dancer, whilst 'Save A Prayer' and 'Everyday People' have a funk vibe throughout. 'Sanctify' is another strong dancer and is heavy on the horns combined with lovely Hammond and guitar. Well worth checking.

SEPTEMBER 2005
VARIOUS - DEF JAZZ
This Def Jazz production brings together the likes of Gerald Albright, Roy Hargrove, Rick Braun and Kevin Toney. Standout is the vocal 'The Rain' that features Ledisi. Try the mid-tempo head-nodder 'All I Need', the riff laden 'Ghetto Jam' or the heavier 'Give It Up'. Also try the nice cover of 'Get U Home (Tonight)'. If you liked T.H.U.G or the Urban Jazz Ensemble this slightly raw set of grooves is for you.

FIVE CORNERS QUINTET - CHASE THE JAZZ GONE BY
This fine Jazz dance album includes the in-demand singles like 'Trading Eights' and 'The Devil Kicks'. Inspired by 60's Hard Bop, Latin, cuts like 'Lighthouse', the ultra fast 'Unsquare Bossa' and 'Three Corners' hit a Jazz groove that will appeal to lovers of recent Gerardo Frisina and Nicole Conte sets. Legendary Jazz vocalist Mark Murphy guests on 3 songs.

DWIGHT TRIBLE - LOVE IS THE ANSWER
Dwight possesses a deep spiritual voice in a similar vein to Leon Thomas and Andy Bey. Here he teams up with Life force Trio to produce a slightly more commercial/left field album than his own brilliant 'Living Waters'. Highlights are the killer jazz dancer 'Freedom Dance' which features some nice rhodes . 'Try Love' is a more soulful mid-tempo dancer, and the brilliant title track has a 'rare groove' feel, a strong hook and powerful message in these troubled times. The mid tempo 'Music' and the spacey 'Antiquity' also hit the spot, and whilst there's a couple of tracks which aren't up to it, overall this is an inspiring album.

Incognito's talented keyboard player delivers an intriguing and interesting album that covers an eclectic selection. Take the soulful Garage of the infectious 'Let Me Be' featuring Amp Fiddler or the jazzy vibe of 'So Beautiful'. 'Let It Ride' is a compelling dance groove with an Incognito feel, whilst the flute led Jazz Funk barnstormer 'A State Of Grace' is the stand-out cut on this varied album.

JAGUAR - JAGUAR
Incredibly recorded in Iceland, this album is a throwback to late 70's horn led Disco Funk a la Sun/ Brass Construction. The vocals are an acquired taste but the grooves on cuts like 'Body Party', 'What's Going On' and the infectious 'It's All Over' are full-blown dancers. Hints of P Funk and early Patrick Adams style Disco floor fillers ('Funky Junky') will also keep the dancers happy. Check the driving and familiar sounding 'Must Be Good'. If you liked the Sunshine Band album from 2004 then this is up your street - albeit stronger.

JULY 2005
KEVIN YOST - FUTURE FLASHBACK
Kevin Yost has built a reputation for 'electronic' Jazz grooves and whilst 'Future Flashback' has that electronic influence it is much more 'organic'. If you enjoyed groove driven Jazz like St Germain or Marc Moulin, then this set of very funky tunes such as 'Deep Inside My Soul' and the Latin vibe of 'Close To You'. 'What Is Cool' is a Jazz groove that will get finger popping and 'Free' is slinky and riff-laden. This album is in danger of being overlooked, unfortunately.

TEDDY ROK 7 UNIVERSAL FOUR
Fine eclectic Jazz album from Finland includes the standout jazzy Soul of 'Feel' with its infectious bass line and the heavy groove driven 'Askaa' among the standouts. 'Steady' is a fine mid-tempo piece, whilst 'Inujam' and 'Around The Clock' add an Afro Beat vibe to the mix. Refreshingly strong and different. Teddy is one of the main driving forces behind the Nu Spirit Of Helsinki and the Five Corners Quintet.

VICTOR DAVIES - HOXTON POP STARS
UK Soul/Jazz vocalist delivers a fine acoustic sounding set that brings Terry Callier in his prime to mind. Cuts like the gentle breezy 'Morning Sun' and the made for summer 'Fly Away' are a joy. The dancer 'Fire' ups the tempo, it is however the laid back grooves like 'Walking In The Rain' that enchant. Nice set.

S TONE INC - LUZ Y SOMBRA
Schema on point again, this strong Jazz set includes several fine Latin tinged dancers like the shuffling 'Emotional Dancing', the foot tapping 'Dreamer' and the gorgeous 'Beira Do Mar'. Check the smokier 'Con Mi Sombra' with its slower tempo and infectious piano riff.

JUNE 2005
DOWN TO THE BONE - SPREAD LOVE LIKE WILDFIRE
Possibly DTTB's best album so far! Check the pulsating Jazz Funk of 'Memphis Groove' or the blistering 'Hammerhead'. The Latin pile driver 'Latin Sagebrush' or the slightly more restrained 'Wildfire Woman' that has a late 60's West Coast feel add spice, whilst the down right dirty 'Pure Funk' adds some grit. 'Angel Baby' features the distinctive vocals of N'Dambi on what is a funky slice of contemporary Soul. The addition of a full brass section adds punch and an harder edge on this superb album.

SABRINA MALHEIROS - EQUILIBRIA
Daughter of Azymuth member Alex Malheiros, Sabrina who guested on 'Brazilian Soul' delivers a super fine Brazilian Jazz set this perfect for balmy summer days. Optimistic cuts like 'Terra De Ninguem' and the jazzier 'Love Sorte' walk that fine line between the best Brazil has to offer and soulful Jazz. The hypnotic 'Vibrasom', the funky Jazz flavoured 'Eu Sous Mais Eu' and the riff-laden 'Passa' are all gems. This is music to smile by.

RON BLAKE - SONIC TONIC
(ltd edition with remix cd) Sax player at the recent Me'Shell Ndegeocello gigs, Ron has a great tone infl by John Coltrane. The album is a mixture of Spiritual, lightly funky and straight ahead jazz. Highlights are the funky 'Tom Blake', which has a great hook, the two parts of the epic 'Invocation' a tough spiritual workout and the title track with its Caribbean feel. Produced by Me'Shell with Christian McBride bass in evidence throughout this a refreshingly different album.

APRIL 2005
POVO - WE ARE POVO
Fine dance Jazz that mixes sultry vocal tracks with outstanding instrumentals like the awesome single 'Uam Uam' (ART Farmer's 'Mau Mau', the driving 'Bee Da Bau' and the modal 'We Are Povo'. Also try the quirky 'Good & Bad', the slow swinger 'Ed The Bull' or the smoochy vocal 'Perfect Day'.

JAZZTRONIK - SAMURAI
The title track was a huge keyboard led Jazz house track that set the dancefloor alight, when released on a Jap 12" a year ago. 'Nana' is a samba style dancer with nice percussion , sax (ala Sadao Watanabe) and Rhodes, whilse 'Arabesque' is an unusual mystical dancer with nice flute and a heavier beat. 'Dance With Me' is a more straight forward jazz house dancer. The standout is 'Colour Of Days' (not on vinyl) a modal jazz dancer with great scat vocals from Yurai sounding a little bit like Bembe Segue. Interesting albeit inconsistant album.

U-NAM - PAST BUILDS THE FUTURE
French musician U-Nam teams up with some heavyweights to produce a good soul/jazz album. The stand outs are 'Love's Taken Over' feat Rahsaan Patterson , a great driving uptempo dancer , and the mid tempo 'Right Here Right Now' feat Phil Perry and Jeff Lorber. 'Blue Mood' is another good soulful dancer feat Leedia, whilst 'Take Da Time' feat Abiodun of Last Poets is a great spoken word led groove. The rest of the album is quality slightly funky smooth jazz with Lorber featuring on four more tracks.

GEORGE DUKE - DUKE
'Duke' is probably George's finest album in 20 years! This eclectic mix traverses many of the diverse styles of the man's music. Standout is the Jazz Funk opus 'Hybrid', but check the dancer 'Saturday Night', the beautiful 'No One' featuring Rachelle Ferrell and the smooth 'Trust'. On the Soul side check the haunting 'Somebody's Body' or the breezy Brazilian flavoured 'Sausalito'. 'Duke' is an exceptional strong album that will appeal not only to the diehard George Duke fans.

MARCH 2005
BAH SAMBA - 4
Excellent mix of Fusion, Soul, Funk and Boogie. This album takes the sound pioneered by the Sunburst Band to another level. Their take on 'Portuguese Love' is already creating waves, but check the (potential) weekender anthem 'Let The Drums Speak' featuring Bill Curtis (plus other members) of the Fatback Band. 'You! You! You!' is a blistering Latin/West Coast workout, whilst 'Doober' is classy made for a summers day instrumental. Also check the Curtis-ish arrangements on 'Far Away.'

{short description of image}
HIPNOSIS - CARROUSEL
European Jazz is enjoying something of a revival. Hipnosis comes from Germany and boy can they play. Whilst sharing some of the Jazz dance flavours that groups from Italy's Schema label and Ricky Tick in Finland, the group's approach is different if not quirky. They are also very much in the tradition of Germany's MPS label (60s/70s), absorbing and interpreting a wide range of musical styles. Try 'The Opposite Of Hamburg', the Eastern flavoured 'Proscuitto Di Fama' or 'Nimm Mich Mit' that enjoys a compelling dance groove. On the modal side 'A Mad Angel' is an exploratory and inventive piece. This album takes you on a 60's Jazz style journey that is never less than enthralling and always exciting.

{short description of image}
MESHELL NDGECELLO/SPIRIT MUSIC OF JAMIA DANCE OF THE INFEDEL
Deep jazz album, mainly downtempo featuring some great playing from the incredible line up feat Roy Hargrove, Kenny Garrett, Jack Dejonette, Don Byron etc, and Me'Shell on bass. The most accessible tracks are 'Aquarium' feat Sabina Scuba on vocals an eerie mid tempo number that builds and really grows on you, 'The Chosen' feat Cassandra Wilson and 'Heaven ' feat Lalah Hathaway. This album takes a few listens to really get into but is worth the patience.

SILHOUETTE BROWN - SAME
Excellent album produced by Dego (4 Hero) and Kaidi Tatham (Agent K) that fuses Neo-Soul with Nu Spirit Beats, think Jill Scott Meets Agent K. Featuring two top U.K. soul/jazz vocalists Bembe Segue and Deborah Jordan who has a sweet voice similar to Sy Smith. The music soaks up 70's and 80's Jazz Funk (Roy Ayers, George Duke, Patrice Rushen)and 80's soul (Loose Ends). 'Who's In Charge' is a barnstorming dancer with heavy bass, 'Check It (Calling You) with some great drumming, 'They Cant Tell Us' a breezy uptempo jazz dancer, and 'Just A Little More' a nice mid-tempo soul track are the highlights but the album is very strong throughout.

FEBRUARY 2005
CASBAH 73 - MOODS AND GROOVES
Jazz funk and Jazz House album from Spain that includes some nice grooves like 'Cabo Verde Strut', 'Still Going On', and the horn and keyboard led floor filler 'Kaldis Brew'. Sounds like something a cross between mid 70's Groove Merchant label and MFSB/Peoples Choice updated to todays beat, well worth checkiing out.

LARS BARTKUHN - DREAMLAND
Instrumental jazz fusion and jazz house from Norway, but in a style similar to that of recent Jap Jazz. 'Thought Of You' has a Pat Metheny influence but grooves along. The more uptempo and haunting 'Discover The World' and 'Dreamland' are floorfillers, butbthe highlight is 'Treasure Everywhere' reminiscent of George Benson's MAW outing 'You Can Do It Baby'. A varied and interesting album.

LOUIE VEGA - EXTENSIONS
The remix set to Louie's EOL set of 2004 is just asimpressive as its predecessor. Inc Kenny Dope's superb mix of 'Cerca De Mi', which starts off as a mid tempo soul joint then builds into a huge dancer. Blaze guest on the latin tinged 'Sunshine' and the berautiful acoustic version of 'Love Is On The Way'. DJ Spinna gets his hands on 'Better DAy' bringing it down a notch and pushing Raul Midon's vocal to the fore. An album for soul and latin fans, Superb

ALEXANDER ZONJIC - SELDOM BLUES
Flautist Zonjic delivers the best Smooth jazz album for some time. With guests like Jeff Lorber, Kirk Whalum and Peter White - what else would you expect! Try the 80's Jazz Funk groove of 'Sweat' or the delicate Peter White co-written 'Isabela'. Angela Bofill adds vocals to a cover of her own 'Under The Moon Over The Sky'. A refreshing slice of Smooth Jazz.

DWIGHT TRIBLE - LIVING WATER

Magnificent deep spiritual jazz album from the voice of Build An Ark. Vocally and musically Dwight is reminiscent of Leon Thomas and Andy Bey. He brilliantly covers Clifford Jordan's modal 'John Coltrane' and Hubbard's 'Little Sunflower'. The highlight is his take on Coltrane's 'Africa', which he turns into a jazz dancer. He also covers Bartz/Bey's 'Celestial Blues' and add lyrics to 'Footprints' which really works. A very special, mesmerising and uplifting album. Highly Recommended.

PAOLO FEDGRIGHINI - SEVERAL PEOPLE
This consistant 'cool'jazz album will appeal to those who dug Nicola Conte and Gerardo Frisini's recent albums. Mainly catchy uptempo dancers and modal grooves with the two keyboard players leading and vocals from Ermanno Principle on 'Please Don't Leave', 'Another Face' and the great 'Oriental Smile'. Sweet voiced Claudia Bernhard leads on the uptempo 'Spread Your Love' and the jazz dancer 'Blu Night In Africa'. Also check the instrumentals 'Circus In C Minor' and 'Urban Savage'

DECEMBER 2004
ROSALIA DE SOUZA
Produced by Nicola Conte and remixed from the Garota Moderna sessions comes classy cuts such as 'Adriana' with the Five Corners Quintet, 'Bossa 31' is re-worked by Gerardo Frisina and the fantastic 'Zona Sul' handled by Raw Deal. Strong Latin Jazz, Bossa and 80's Groove.

AZYMUTH - BRAZILIAN SOUL
This album celebrates Azymuth's thirtieth year and it is an absolute gem. Cuts like 'Retro Visor' and 'O Lance' are wickedly funky yet accessible grooves. Their distinctively melodic but rhythmic approach is highlighted by the breezy 'Biaozinho Carioca' or the atmospheric 'Sem Destino. This is one of Azymuth's strongest albums.

FERTILE GROUND - BLACK IS
Fertile Ground is probably the best full band of their generation, and their live sound and horns add an extra dimension to their music. 'Black Is…' is strong a candidate for album of the year that will appeal to lovers of 'neo' Soul and Jazz. Navasha Daya's vocals drip with Soul and she shines on tracks like the lilting 'Yellow Daisies' and the soulful 'You'. Check also the brooding slow Funk of 'Changing Woman'. The uplifting 'Live In The Light' with its danceable mix of Soul and Jazz is fantastic, but it is the beautiful hypnotic title song, which is truly outstanding and is one of the songs of this (indeed any) year. Please note the vinyl has 7 of the 14 album tracks.

NICOLA CONTE -OTHER DIRECTIONS
Another great latin tinged cool jazz album from Italy following on the heels of Gerardo Frisina's epic 'Hi Note'. The vocal tracks have shades of Koop, but the instrumentation is far better and it really swings. 'Impulso', 'Dharma Buma' and his version of 'Nefertiti' really kick, but the standout is the dance floor killer 'Kind Of Sunshine'. Think classic 60's Blue Note, but with a very 'Now' sound.

INCOGNITO - ADVENTURES IN BLACK SUNSHINE
A new Incognito set is like breath of fresh air & 'Adventures..' is no exception. Maysa makes a welcome return & reaches sublime levels on 'The Principles Of Love', 'True To Myself' & the Latin tinged 'Everything Your Heart Desires'. Check also the Fela tribute 'Listen To The Music' on which George Duke guests. Also try the Jazz Funk instrumental '25th Chapter'. Fantastic A must buy.

ROY HARGROVE - STRENGTH EP
Roy's 'Hard Groove' was one of THE albums of 2003, and 'Strength' carries on magnificently where that masterpiece left off. Trumpeter Roy is fast establishing himself as the funkiest jazz man of his generation (like Herbie in the 70's). 6 tracks of tough, funk jazz grooves, highlighted by 'For Fun' featuring Omar, the soulful almost two stepper title track, the Incognito-ish party dancer 'Universe' and the Afro beat 'Rich Man's Welfare'. Brilliant and contender for Jazz album of this year. We still have copies of 'Hard Groove'

BUILD AN ARK - PEACE WITH EVERY STEP - CD/ DOUBLE VINYL
The concept behind Build An Ark - building a bridge between cultures and faith - is much needed in our strife torn world. The music is heavy and echoes the great music of Strata East, Black Jazz, Nimbus and the Tribe labels from back in the day. Indeed several of the musicians such as Nate Morgan and Phil Ranelin were a part of those labels. The killer covers of 'You Got To Have Freedom' with Dwight Trible's deeply emotive vocals (a la Leon Thomas) and Ronnie Laws' 'Always There' are truly awesome. Deep.

SOULIVE - TURN IT OUT DOUBLE CD (ORIGINAL/REMIX)/ DOUBLE VINYL (REMIX ONLY)
When it comes to live performances, Soulive have no peers. Their all-action funky style seems to know no limits and the UK reissue of their debut album from 1999 captures that energy perfectly. Paired with a Hip Hop remix of that set, it is the original album that reflects the trio's Jazz roots and sounds not unlike a late 60's Blue Note/Prestige Hammond set. Check the blistering live version of 'Uncle Junior', the driving title song or the gritty 'Tabasco'. Standouts on the remix are the single 'Doin Something' & the beautiful mid-tempo vocal 'Arruga'. Hot stuff.

MARCO DI MARCO - MY LONDON FRIENDS CD / DOUBLE VINYL
Marco Di Marco will be a familiar name to connoisseurs of Italian Jazz. This inspired musical marriage with London based saxman/flautist Nathan Haines is a delight with Haines in particular fine form, whilst Di Marco's gentle piano style provides the perfect backdrop to the energetic saxophonist. The feel is distinctly late 60's echoing the brightness and optimism of London's Kings Road in that era. This is joyful stuff - jazzy with hints of Latin as the modal 'Brazilian Waltz' illustrates. The bass led 'Solaria' & the slinky percussive 'Take Off' are strong 60's Jazz pieces that underline the uplifting vibe.

JAVI P3Z ORQUESTA - SPORTS CD
Using the Olympics as the inspiration for this quirky, quizzical and tongue in cheek selection out of Spain. The full band including horns the album works well on the Afro-beat barnstormer 'Safari' and the Jazz dancer 'Ping Pong'. This eclectic musical delight takes a wide-ranging journey through jazzy and funky grooves.

SPANISH HARLEM ORCHESTRA FEAT RUBEN BLADES - ACROSS 110TH ST CD
Lovers of Salsa and Afro Cuban rhythms will adore this album; the sensual cross rhythms will seduce and entrance you. The album kicks off at a moderate pace and builds to a crescendo on 'Te Cantare'. The full horn section and layered percussion give a lush backdrop to the romantic vocals and fine solos.

AL JARREAU - ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE CD
Al Jarreau most Jazz orientated album for years. This selection of standards (primarily) allows Al to demonstrate the elasticity of his vocals. Eddie Harris' 'Cold Duck' hits a jazzy groove, whilst the beauty of his voice is particularly striking on the ballads 'The Nearness Of You' and 'My Foolish Heart'. It is however the new material that standout, such as the idiosyncratic 'Scootcha Booty', and 'Groovin High' which features Al's trademark scat.

TERRY CALLIER - LOOKIN OUT CD / SINGLE LP
Terry Callier possesses a unique voice that blends Soul, Jazz, Blues even Folk. His music transcends genres, styles and fads. 'Lookin Out' is an inspirational set of mellow downbeat songs that is a window into Terry's Soul, as the wonderful 'Africa Now' shows with its poignant message. 'Jazz My Rhythm & Blues' and the blues tinged 'Midnight Mile' plus the reverential tribute 'Blue For Billie Holiday' are typical Callier songs full of insightful lyrics and delicate yet delicious melodies. His best album since Timepeace. The vinyl includes all the tracks mentioned but contains 8 of the 17 cuts from the CD.

A BOSSA ELETRICA - ELETRIFICACAO CD /DOUBLE VINYL
The raw Fusion label out of Sweden is responsible for some of the most infectious Jazz grooves of the last couple of years. A Bossa Eletrica is a six-piece Swedish combo whose sound is more reminiscent of Rio than Malmo, will enhance the label's reputation still further. This joyful album skips through a selection of Brazilian themes effortlessly. 'Quem Vai Devolver Meu Dia' is a Samba piece worthy a place in any collection. 'Veja O Sol' starts mellow then ups the tempo. If you are into the modern sound of Dalata or respect Marcus Valle, Joyce et al. And don't miss their take on Viva Brazil/Alive's 'Skin Do Le Le'. This is music to make you smile, dance and uplift.

GERARDO FRISINA - HI NOTE CD / DOUBLE VINYL
Candidate for Jazz album of the year (2004), 'Hi Note' combines 60's Blue Note influences with Latin and modal sounds. This album kicks off with the infectious 'Inviolatin' and never lets up the pace. The furious pace is sustained on cuts like 'Bluesanova' and 'Saeta 03'. On the Latin side, check 'Cubana' & 'Sophisticated Samba' that owe more than just a nod towards mid 60's Horace Silver. This fantastic album seems to achieve the impossible by sounding both retro and brand spanking new and fresh simultaneously. The Italian musicians pay homage to 60's Jazz through their sheer exuberance and the standard of their ensemble playing and solos. In our opinion this album is essential listening.

MARCUS JOHNSON - JUST DOING WHAT I DO
Marcus Johnson is a Fusion pianist/keyboards man in the tradition of legends such as Ramsey Lewis. A series of funky Smooth Jazz albums (like 'Chocolate City Groovin' and 'Urban Grooves') have earned Marcus the reputation for finely balanced synthesises of Jazz Funk, Soul and Smooth Jazz. 'Just Doing What I Do' continues that fusion. The title song is a gentle mid-tempo groover, whilst the bouncy 80's Fusion of 'Just To Get By' (shades of Rodney Franklin) will get feet tapping and moving. The relaxed & compelling 'Sunday @ Seqouia', the heavier 'Yellow Cup' & the RnB flavoured 'I Wanna' add variety and spice to this fine set.

BEBEL GILBERTO - BEBEL GILBERTO CD
Bebel's musical heritage cannot be questioned. Bebel' style is firmly in the tradition of Astrud Gilberto/Joyce and its waspish qualities is the perfect expression of the Brazilian reputation for the sensual and sexy. She sings softly in both Portuguese & English floating across a series of seductive rhythms. It is difficult to pick tracks as the album reflects a romantic mood, but 'River Song', 'All Around' & Baby' are perhaps the most impressive songs.

INTUIT - INTUIT CD / DOUBLE VINYL
Another contender for the Jazz album of 2004, and probably the Compost labels' most complete project to date. Guest such as Andy Bey, Doug Carn and Airto/Flora Purim steal the show. Carn's 'Western Sunrise' is re-invigorated by Bey's bluesy lead vocal, whilst the Afro-beat 'Fenytola' is a real barnstormer. The evocative 'Planet Birth' strikes a chord, but this album maintains a high standard track to track and is another essential purchase, especially if you like albums that takes you on a musical journey rather staying within a single theme. Intuit touches Afro-beat, Soul, Spiritual Jazz (a la Strata East/Black Jazz) and Brazilian flavours along the way.
