JERRY
BUTLER - NOTHING SAYS I LOVE YOU LIKE I LOVE YOU/BEST

on top of Gamble and Huff's Philly style production. Check the breezy 'Cooling
Out' or the stomping 'Mighty Good People'. 'Sad Eyes', Would You Mind' and

is a dreamy ballad.

PHYLISS
HYMAN - LIVING ALL ALONE/PRIME OF MY LIFE
Two of the best albums from the
great late Phyllis, both recorded for Philadelphia International. 'Living' from
1986 includes 'Ain't You Had Enough Love', 'Screaming At The Moon' and her
cover of 'What You Wont Do For Love'. 'Prime' probably her best album includes
'Meet Me On The Moon' , 'When I Give My Love (this time)'and excellent tile
track plus 'I Cant Take It Anymore' and 'Living In Confusion' perhaps
illustrating her tragic state of mind. Excellent value.
TRAMMPS -
DISCO CHAMPS
This 1977, Philadelphia
International album features mixes by Tom Moulton of tracks originally recorded
for the Golden Fleece label. The extended remixes include 'Love Epidemic',
'Where Do We Go From Here' and 'Stop and Think' plus 'Trusting Heart'. The
Golden Fleece original versions are included as bonuses.
JAMES
BROWN - GREATEST BREAKBEATS
James Brown's classic Funk tunes
have provided Hip-Hop producers and samplers with countless beats and riffs.
This 24 track selection brings together some of the finest samples such as
'Funky Drummer', 'Mind Power', 'Papa Don't Take No Mess', 'Blues And Pants',
'The Payback', 'Funky President' and many more. Quality.
ETTA
JAMES - VERY BEST OF
The legendary Etta James' music on
Chess stretches back to 1960, this superb collection covers her fourteen-year
stay at the label. From her debut single 'At Last' to here all-time classics
like 'I Just Want To Make Love To You', 'Tell Mama' and 'I'd Rather Go Blind',
the album is comprehensive. It also includes 70's gems like 'You Can Leave Your
Hat On' and the 70's Ghetto imagery 'All The Way Down' surely one of Soul
music's finest tracks.
JACKIE
MOORE - SWEET CHARLIE BABE
Great gut wrenching southern style
Soul. Jackie's impassioned vocals excel on cuts like 'Darling Baby' and the
modern Soul 'Both Ends Against The Middle'. The Soul hit 'Time' is another
socio-political statement against a 60's style horn arrangement. Though
recorded in 1973, the album sounds slightly earlier (c.69/70).
OVATIONS
- GOLDWAX RECORDINGS
Lead singer Louis Williams
possessed a golden voice as close to that of Sam Cooke's as you could wish. His
fine voice glides across tracks like 'I've Gotta Go', 'Don't Cry' and 'I
Believe I'll Go Back Home' that seem to epitomise Soul from Memphis from the
mid 60's.
SOUL
EXPEDITION - SOUL EXPEDITION
One of the hardest Funk albums to
find is now out on CD and vinyl. Check the instrumental 'Night Life' with its
driving bass line and blazing horns, the typically early 70's Funk of 'Itching'
or the slower heavier 'Get Down On It'. It is back to the groove with 'I Don't
Know What This World Is Coming To'. Also try the gorgeous emotion packed ballad
'We Gonna Make It'.

INNER
LIFE - ANTHOLOGY
Inner Life’s finest moments
like ‘Moment Of My Life’, ‘Ain’t No Mountain High
Enough’, ‘Make It Last Forever’ ‘Live It Up’ and
‘I Like It Like That’. The second CD includes the sought after
mixes (Larry Levan) of ‘Aint No Mountain’ and (Shep Pettibone) of
‘Moment.’ plus the Morales mix of ‘I’m Caught Up In A
One Night Love Affair’, and the later ‘No Way and ‘Your
Love’.
|
LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY – THE ANTHOLOGY
Loleatta was probably the best
female singer of the disco era. This includes all her classics,
‘Hit And Run’, ‘Love Sensation’, ‘All About The
Papers’, ‘Runaway’, ‘Dreamin’, ‘Catch Me On
The Rebound’, ‘Mama Wont Papa Don’t’ plus some of her
great soul tracks incl her fantastic version of Sam Dees ‘Worn Out Broken
Heart’. Classic soul and disco.
|
SALSOUL
ORCHESTRA - ANTHOLOGY
27 tracks of quality Disco Soul
that mirrors MFSB albeit with a more commercial slant. EWF's 'Getaway' and
'Burning Spear' vie with vocal gems like 'Seconds' and 'Runaway' featuring
Loleatta Holloway and 'Take Some Time Out For Love' feat Jocelyn Brown. Superb
stuff that still fills dancefloors the world over
where the likes of the
Masters Of Work got inspiration
|
KLIQUE -
LETS WEAR IT OUT
Great Early 80's boogie album in a
similar vein to Change/Kleeer, partly written and produced by Michael Cooper.
'Dance Like Crazy' has a Slave feel to it, 'I Cant Shake This Feeling', 'Baby
You Can Be The One', 'Best Of Love' and 'I Cant Get Enough' have that up-tempo
'Change' sound. The duet ballad 'Feels So Good' shows off Howard Huntsberry's
voice.
|
FUTURES -
PARTY MEN (BEST OF PHILADELPHIA YEARS)
Underrated vocal harmony group
from the 70's, the Futures recorded two albums for Gamble and Huff's
Philadelphia International label, 'Greetings Of Peace' and 'Past Present and
Futures'. The latter included two very different tracks that have become
anthems - firstly the driving Modern Soul/Disco dancer 'Party Time Man' and the
lovely 2 stepper 'Ain't No Time Fa Nothing'. 'Silhouettes' from the 'Peace' is
a gentle ballad, whose beautiful harmonies takes you back to the Doo Wop days;
this track was covered (in Reggae0 by Dennis Brown.

ROY AYERS
- VIRGIN UBIQUITY II
The second instalment of BBE's
trawls Roy's unreleased back catalogue (1976-81). Check the slow paced
'Holiday', the aptly titled groove 'Funk In The Hole' or the infectious
archetypal Ayers' dancer 'Tarzan'. The mid-tempo 'Come To Me' will satisfy
those who enjoy his Soul orientated material and 'Release Yourself' hits an
early 80's Boogie vein. Check also 'Virgin Ubiquity Vol 1' still available on
CD £13.95

MODULATIONS - ITS ROUGH OUT HERE
Classic mid 70's Philly soul with
great vocals strings and horns. Title track is a true classic Funky Philly soul
and a rare groove monster. 'Head On Collision With Heartbreak', 'Love At Last'
and 'I Cant Fight Your Love' are up tempo Philly ala O'Jays/H Melvin, whilst
'I'm Hopelessly In Love' is a mid tempo modern track. Classic 70's
soul.
|
RON
HENDERSON/CHOICE OF COLORS GEMINI LADY
Reissue of extremely rare mid 70's
album plus a multitude of unreleased tracks. The album is a Modern soul
connoisseur's haven. Many tracks are in a similar vein to JR Bailey's epic 'You
and Me', like 'I'll Be Around', 'I Feel I Have It In Me', 'Baby I Want To Be
Yours', 'Gemini Lady and 'Problem Child'. Check the modern soul dancers
'Nobody Will Ever Take Your Love From Me' and 'Your Love'. 20 tracks of classic
70's soul.
|
JEAN
CARN- WHEN I FIND YOU LOVE/SWEET AND WONDERFUL
'When I Find You' is probably
Jean's best album including not only the club classics 'Was That All It Was'
and 'My Love Don't Come Easy' but some great soul tracks 'Start The Fire', and
'Lonely Girl In a Cold World'. 'Sweet And Wonderful' incl the title track duet
with Glenn Jones, 'We Got Some Catchin Up To Do' and 'Bet Your Lucky Star'.
Classic soul.
|
CARESS -
CARESS
This rare Patrick Adams
production from 1977 has a sweet Soul feel to it a la Blue Magic/ Stylistics.
Recorded in New York, the album has a 70's Philly vibe complete with falsetto
lead and strings especially on mid-tempo gems like 'I Just Want To Spend My
Life' and 'Just Like In The Movies'. This Philly feel extends to the modern
Soul dancers like 'Brand New Love' and 'Opportunity'.
|
DORIS
DUKE - I'M A LOSER/LEGEND IN HER OWN TIME
This CD features two great 'deep'
Soul albums, indeed 'I'm A Loser' is often heralded as the greatest deep Soul
album and was the favourite the late Dave Godin. Released in 1969, it includes
'To The Other Woman (I'm The Other Woman)'. 'Legend In Her Own Time' contains
'If She's Your Wife (Who Am I)' - that started the whole saga continued by
Shirley Brown/ Millie Jackson/ Barbara Mason. Both are produced by Swamp Dogg,
this two on one is an essential album for deep Soul fans.

|
PHILLIP
MITCHELL - PICK HIT OF THE WEEK
The second instalment and follow
up to 'Just The Beginning', 'Pick Hit Of The Week' unearths some more
unreleased gems from the talented singer/songwriter Mitchell. His version (the
original?) of 'Don't Do This' is anthemic Modern Soul cut later made famous by
Sidney Joe Qualls. Cuts like 'First Lady Of The Universe' and 'Pick Hit Of The
Week' underline the man's song-writing skills. This compilation is the perfect
compliment to the first volume.

|
SOUL
TORNADOS - COMPLETE RECORDINGS CD/TREBLE 7" PACK
This mini CD represents the entire
recordings of this Funk band's output. Given the quality of the Funk on this
release, this is testament to the depth of talent in 70's Black America and the
vagaries of the music industry. The blistering Hammond driven Funk of 'Hot
Pants Breakdown' kicks matters off in hair raising style, whilst the JBs tinged
'Go For Yourself' will get feet moving as its walking bass line dances all over
the place. Every track is however a winner.

|
STYLISTICS - ULTIMATE COLLECTION DOUBLE
At the pinnacle of their success
in the mid 70's, the Stylistics epitomized the more commercial end of sweet
Soul. Their tight harmonies and the light arrangements (Thom Bell/Linda Creed)
crossed over to the mainstream. In hindsight, the group's work should be
re-assessed as the quality of the songs has stood the test of time. Tracks like
'People Make The World Go Round' and 'Betcha By Golly Wow' have attained the
status of standards in Soul and Jazz. Songs like 'Stop Look Listen', 'You Are
Everything', 'I'm Stone In Love With You' and 'Can't Give You Anything' are
popular Soul songs even today.

ASHFORD
AND SIMPSON - VERY BEST OF
15 tracks that are taken primarily
from the husband and wife team's Warner Brothers period with a couple of songs
from their early 80's Capitol sojourn. As songwriters, these guys had few peers
as classics like 'It Seems To Hang On', 'Don't Cost You Nothing', 'Found A
Cure', 'Love Don't Make It Right', 'Street Corner' and 'Solid' amply
illustrate. Timeless duets that emphasize the love that this couple have for
each other.

BLUE
MAGIC - GREATEST HITS
Archetypal 70's Soul harmony group
out of Philadelphia who vied with the Stylistics in the sweet Soul stakes.
Their light and pop-orientated sound is perfectly illustrated by hits such as
'Sideshow', 'Three Ring Circus' and 'Welcome To The Club' that are among the
highlights on this 12-song compilation.

JEAN
CARNE - BEST OF : CLOSER THAN CLOSE
Jean Carne is the ultimate diva -
her voice is simply divine. This collection not only covers her most successful
period with Philadelphia International, but also touches her 80's work too.
Collaborations with Norman Connors like 'Valentine Love' helped make her name
and the duet with Al Johnson on 'Back For More' need little introduction. But
it is the Philly classics without which no 'Best Of Jean Carne' would be
complete that take the plaudits. Tracks like 'If You Wanna Go Back', 'Don't Let
It Go To Your Head' and 'Was That All It Was' are Soul classics bar none. Her
solo debut single 'Free Love' and the wonderful mid-tempo groover 'My Love
Don't Come Easy' are also included in this excellent compilation.

CREATIVE
SOURCE - CREATIVE SOURCE AND MORE
Creative Source's debut is as fine
example of where Soul was in 1974 as any. The album was funky yet still harked
back to Soul's commercial 60's heyday. Skip Scarborough's 'Can't Hide Love' is
a classy 2 stepper and has been recorded by the likes of Earth Wind And Fire
and Isaac Hayes/ Dionne Warwick, but Creative Source's remains the definitive
take. Bill Withers' 'Who Is He, What Is He To You' is Disco Soul of monumental
proportions; its solid groove is matched by harmonies and a full orchestral
arrangement that would do Norman Whitfield proud. 'Pass The Feelin On' is the
most noteworthy of the additional songs.

TYRONE
DAVIS - IN THE MOOD/ BEST OF
Tyrone has a voice that just drips
with Soul and his recording career spans five decades! The Chicago Soul man
delivers classic Soul mixing mainstream dancers with awesome ballads out of
which the late Davis squeezes every ounce of emotion. This excellent
compilation delves into his five-year stay at Columbia from the mid 70's to the
early 80's. His bluesy tones are intimate and are perfectly suited to ballads
like 'In The Mood', 'Be With Me' and 'Close To You'. 15 tracks in all.

EMOTIONS
- BEST OF
16-track compilation that covers
the Emotions' Columbia/ARC period mainly produced by Maurice White (Earth Wind
And Fire). 'Best Of My Love' is a classic song that still sounds fresh, but the
likes of 'Flowers', the gorgeous ballad 'Don't Ask My Neighbours' and the
beautiful 'Key To My Heart' are classics in their own right. These girls mixed
Gospel tones with Soul to make a richly textured sound to which Earth Wind And
Fire provide the perfect musical landscape. The pop hit 'Boogie Wonderland'
that they recorded with EWF is added as a bonus.
|
ATLANTIC
STARR - BEST OF
Classy early 80's super-group,
whose repertoire includes hits like 'Circles', 'Silver Shadow', 'When Love
Calls' and 'Touch A Four Leaf Clover', all of which are featured on this 14
track compilation. The distinctive vocals of Sharon Bryant defined Soul at that
time.
ANITA
BAKER - RAPTURE
When Anita Baker recorded
'Rapture', it was like a breath of fresh air. A voice whose purity and
resonance still reverberates today combined with a fresh soulfulness that has
outlasted any of her 80's contemporaries. Anita's voice soars, swoons and
seduces on this selection of classic songs like 'Sweet Love', 'You Bring Me
Joy', 'Caught Up In The Rapture' and 'Same Ole Love' - frequently covered but
never surpassed. This album is an all-time classic Soul album from a epoch that
did not produce too many.
CHANGE -
VERY BEST OF
The 'Change' sound came to
dominate the dancefloors of the early 80's and is revered to this day. They
helped change the music of the day with their fusing of the New York vibe with
European influences. Their major classics are here including 'Searching' and
'Glow Of Love' that features a youthful Luther Vandross. Check also the 80's
anthems 'Paradise', 'Very Best In You', 'Change Of Heart' and 'Turn On Your
Radio'.
