Primarily a Jazz label, New York's Mainstream label also released fine Soul albums notably Alice Clark classic self titled set featuring 'Don't You Care' and 'Never Did I Stop Loving You'. Afrique, comprising the label's studio musicians such as Chuck Rainey, Paul Humphrey and Charles Kynard deliver a funky set: 'Soul Makossa' that includes the Manu Dibango classic plus 'Hot Mud', 'House Of The Rising Funk' and 'Kissing My Love'.
Trumpeter Blue Mitchell's 'Blues' Blues', 'Last Tango = Blues' and 'Graffiti Blues' are 3 wicked funky Soul Jazz albums. 'Blues' Blues' features 'Granite And Concrete' and 'Just Made Up' two groove driven gems. 'Last Tango' includes Mitchell's take on 'Soul Turnaround' and Cymande's 'The Message' and several other killer cuts. The title cut on 'Graffitti Blues', 'Yeah Ya Right', 'Express' and 'Dorado' are wickedly funky Jazz grooves. Just get all three superb!
If funky organ is your thing then Charles Kynard's self-titled set and 'Your Mama Don't Dance' fit the bill. The latter includes wonderful covers of 'Superstition', and 'I've Got So Much Trouble In My Mind', but is revered for the Afro Funk-Jazz of 'Zambezi'. The lesser known Charles Kynard set is wickedly funky organ featuring cuts like 'She', 'Grits' , the heavier 'Greeze', the infectious 'Greens' and 'El Toro Poo Poo'.
Also on the Jazz side check the spiritual Jazz of Frank Foster's quasi symphonic 'Loud Minority'. The album also includes the elongated heavy groove of 'JP's Thing'. On the Latin tip check the late 60's Boogaloo of Mauricio Smith's 'Bitter Acid'. With its upbeat hip walking and carefree vibe, this has that 60's latino Soul feel.
Sugar Billy's 'Super Duper Love' is renowned for the title song (covered by Joss Stone), but check the funky 'Too Much Too Soon' and various southern style Soul gems. And if you are looking for a real gem of an album check out Ellerine Harding's album 'Ellerine' featuring the modern Soul anthem 'Get Up Daddy' and two bonus cuts 'Tonight Let The Other Woman Cry Some' and 'We'll Cry Together'.
Also don't forget the various artists compilations reviewed previously A Man Needs A Woman, Gonna Have A Good Time, Talk To The Rain, Free Soul Mainstream, excellent 70's soul.
