ALBUM OF THE WEEK
KIRK WHALUM – EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING CD £16.95
Kirk's tribute to the late and great Donny Hathaway pays homage to one of music great songwriters, singers and performers. Whalum's soulful sax captures the spirit of Hathaway's songs especially powerful is 'Someday We'll Be Free'. Try also the breezy take on 'Love Love Love' and the smoothest of jazzy takes on 'Valdez In The Country'. The groove of the inspirational 'Voices Inside/ Everything Is Everything'. The tribute/ covers CD had started to become too formularized, but then you hear Kirk's Donny tribute and you are listening to a master interpreting a master. Brilliant.

OLI SILK – ALL WE NEED CD £16.95
British born Smooth Jazz keyboard player is rapidly gaining a reputation in the US with his brand of funky grooves. That slight edge is to the forefront on cuts such as the flowing 'LA To London' and the heavier 'Latin Haze'. The strong compositions are a feature of 'All We Need'. 'Bring Back Those Days' has a catchy chorus and an early 80's feel, whilst 'Don't Know About Love' is an infectious riff-laden cut with superb female lead vocal.

WES BERWISE’S AUGUST ALBUM OF THE MONTH
Richard Earnshaw - In Time
Good things come to those who wait, and wait we have for British producer and musician Richard Earnshaw’s debut album. Indeed it’s been seven years since the project began but as the title of the album suggests it has arrived right on time. As we seem to be slowly passing through a period of ever deepening nostalgia, it’s so refreshing to hear an album which although building heavily on the musical foundations of our soulful forefathers, this uplifting set intertwines freshness and maturity in a manner that totally belies the fact that this is his first release.
A music graduate of London University, Richard Earnshaw has established himself as an important figure in the UK soul and house music scene. And on this multi vocal release successfully mixes big groove dance, jazz funk instrumentals, ballads, gospel and even spoken word, leaving one wondering just why we haven’t heard so much more from this man before!
Guest appearances include Carleen Anderson, Roy Ayers, Joceyln Brown, Kenny Thomas and Ursula Rucker amongst others, and the quality and the refinement of the production and the song writing does all of them justice.
This album exudes class and has to be one of the highlights of 2010 so far, and contains tracks that you’ll be enjoying for a long time to come.
Highly recommended.
