WEEK 11- INCOGNITO/TINA JENKINS CRAWLEY
Incognito are the leading British Jazz –funk /Soul band and their new album ‘Surreal’ has been eagerly anticipated. The new album maintains their quality of sound, but has a slightly fresher sound, check their cover of Queen Yanha’s Aint It Time’ and the brilliant instrumental Rivers Of the Sun .Also check the really strong soul/jazz/gospel debut from Tina Jenkins Crawley whose voice has a touch of Ledisi in it.
There’s also some good reissues this week from Linda Clifford, Vicki Sue Robinson, Melisa Morgan, Tavares, Wah Wah Watson and a superb compilation of the works of Regional Garland from Michigan whose tracks from the 70’s deserve to be heard be a wider audience than the inner circle.
The Acid jazz EP includes a really nice late 60’s track from the Fantastics ‘we got good lovin’ which I am sure will gain attention in the modern/crossover scene.
We've also started putting special mixes on our mixcloud page - we'll be updatig these every Monday with new mixes from records drawn from our vinyl racks - be sure to check it out and follow us for regular updates. Click here to check it out.
Have a good soulful and jazzy weekend
best regards

ALBUM OF THE WEEK - week ending 23rdMarch2012
INCOGNITO - SURREAL - CD - DOME - NEW - £12.99
Incognito are established as the premier UK soul/jazz-funk band, their full production sound and that horn section having graced us for over 30 years. ’Surreal’ builds on that legacy and whilst it is instantly recognisable as an Incognito album, it has a slightly different feel to it. The barnstorming cover of Queen Yahna’s ‘Aint it Time’ gives this underground dance floor classic a contemporary feel. ‘Rivers of the Sun’Has to be one of the best instrumentals they have ever cut. It has an early Roy Ayers rhythmic approach topped by blistering horns. The Breezy ‘Don’t Wanna know’, ‘The Way You Love’ and the urgent ‘The less you know’ and the mid tempo ‘This Must Be Love’, ‘Above The night’ and ‘Capricorn Sun’ will keep their fans happy. As you would expect this is Quality music throughout.

TINA JENKINS CRAWLEY - THE LONGEST JOURNEY - CD - TJC - NEW - £13.99 Really good debut album from Tina Jenkins Crawley which mixes contemporary gospel, Neo Soul and Jazzy soul elements to really good effect. The bossa influenced soul of ‘Set You Free’ is a really uplifting shuffler, ‘Don’t Give You Up’ is a bright and breezy upper mid tempo soul track, ‘It Comes To You’ has a mildly funky soul feel, and ‘Fruit of The Spirit’ and ‘Lord You Came For me’ are organic soul steppers. The more gospel influence ballads are also good. Tina sounds in places a little like Ledisi. This is a strong album.
