HOT THIS WEEK - IN TODAY
ALBUM OF THE WEEK Maxwell – Blacksummersnight CD £13.95 CD/DVD £17.95
The long wait is over, 8 years since his last album Maxwell is back with probably his best album since that incredible debut. Like ‘Urban Hang Suite’, this album needs to be listened to in its entirety to fully appreciate it, and it sounds retro but also very contemporary. The band is very tight and the musical content is high, with Maxwell‘s soulful voice riding on the top. ‘Bad Habit’s and ‘Cold’ are horn backed semi-funky groovers. ‘Help Somebody’ and ‘Stop The World’ are groove ridden tracks that build to a crescendo, and the more upbeat ‘Love You’ will keep the feet moving. The slow mid tempo ‘Pretty Things’ allows Maxwell’s soulful voice to really shine through, and the funky horn riffed instrumental ‘Phoenix Rise’ rounds things off nicely. Great album.
Gianna – Something True CD £12.95
Nice summer feel to this album, bright and breezy, check ‘My Everything’, ‘Maybe I Can Be’, ‘Things That I Do’. Produced by Kloud 9 who appear on the orchestrated ‘Hooked On You’, love also the uptempo ‘One Step Closer’ – check this groove.
Richard Alexander Davis – Lovin You Direct CD £14.95
UK singer excels on this selection of early 80’s style grooves. 10 tracks full of a good time vibe on cuts like ‘High From Your Lovin’, ‘I Really Want You Now’ the Maxwell-ish ‘Back In Love’ and much more. Very catchy melodies, fat basslines and danceable grooves topped with a fine vocal performance.
Carmen Lundy – Solamente CD £16.95
Carmen is one of Jazz’s most eloquent female vocalists. Articulate yet full of Soul and emotion, Carmen is one of our favourite Jazz vocalists. At time of going to print, we were unable to find clips.

Lorenzo Tucci – Touch CD £15.95
Drummer Lorenzo Tucci provides the backbone for the Schema rhythm section (Nicola Conte, Mario Biondi etc- the vocal tracks will appeal to lovers of the latter) and his feel and touch is both formidable and subtle. The drums as you would expect are slightly higher in the mix on this set, but it is the songs, melodies and the free and easy vibe that evokes a bygone era. The Sinatra-ish ‘’Ensadinado’ kicks things off, whilst the popular (from the Freedom Jazz Dance series) ‘Please Don’t Leave’ kicks into a barnstorming groove. Alice Riccardi’s tasteful vocals spark the glorious ‘The Sky’, and ‘Lilemor’ is the epitome of ‘cool’. The 60’s breezy groove of ‘Wintersong’ gives the excellent horn section room to stretch, whilst the more moody and slower ‘Tropicola’ adds a funkier feel. ‘Balancao No Samba’ combines Latin with that 60’s optimistic vibe. Essential Jazz set.
Rosalia De Souza- D’improvviso CD £15.95
Italian based Brazilian chanteuse, Rosalia De Souza delivers probably he best album ever. Drawing on the musically rich Brazilian songbook, she along with Nicola Conte/ Mario Biondi’s band breathes new life into these classics. The combination of her exquisite voice and the band’s incredible musicianship is irresistible. The tracks just glide with grace, check ‘Banzo’ and he title song! Jorge Ben’s ‘Carolina Carol Bela’ and ‘Luiza Manequim’ are ridiculously catchy. ‘Opinao’ and ‘Sambinha’ fuse a jazzier vibe with the Brazilian core. The arrangements by pianist Luca Mannutza are the work of genius; this album could become the soundtrack to the summer and invoke images of Rio!
S-Tone Inc – Moon In Libra CD £15.95
S Tone Inc has been one of the mainstays of the Schema label for many years. Vocal cuts like the slinky ‘My Only Man’ and the wonderful ‘How The High The Moon’, the latter featuring Angie Brown on vocals mix that Schema magic with a Latin style. The slower more reflective ‘Stormy’ adds a more melodic inflection. It is the percussive ‘Ponta Da Pedra’ where the groove takes over with a Samba feel; Rosalia De Souza.
Christian Prommer’s Drumlesson – Plays Thediningrooms CD £15.95
Drummer/percussion Christian Prommer’s interpretation of Thediningrooms is a downbeat set of Jazz grooves with female vocal on many tracks. Try the jazzy instrumental ‘Destination Moon’, the vocal ‘Thank You’ or the Jazz groove of ‘Tunnel’. But it is the second half of the album that excels on a series of quality and atmospheric Jazz tunes.
Mario Biondi – Handful Of Soul CD £15.95
One of the albums of the decade, this jazzy set hits pinnacle after pinnacle. Mario’s vocal combines the suave and sophistication of Frank Sinatra with the soulfulness of Jon Lucien. The classic ‘This Is What You Are’ is just one of many great tracks such as the interpretation of ‘Rio De Janeiro Blue’, ‘the title cut, ‘No Mercy For Me’ and ‘I Can’t Keep From Cryin Sometimes’. Due to inconsistency of supply, we recommend that you do not hesitate to get yourself a copy.

Follow-up to the classic 'Other Directions' takes a more vocal route. The style (though not the vocal) resembles Mario Biondi's wonderful 'Handful Of Soul' from a couple years back especially on Ellington's 'Caravan' and the Eastern vibe of 'The Nubian Queens', the latter featuring Jose James. 'I See All Shades Of You' features the delectable Jazz vocals of Alice Ricciardi on a swinging groove that is on the one as they say. She also contributes on the waltz 'Song For The Seasons'. The instrumental 'Macedonia' is a jazzy instrumental piece of some gusto. For Jazz dance aficionados this is a must buy and already a contender for Jazz album of 2009.

WILL DOWNING – CLASSIQUE CD £15.95
Will confirms that when it comes to romantic soul he has few peers. His rich deep voice oozes soul throughout this great album on a mixture of original tracks and good covers. 'Ride' , 'More Time', 'Just think about it', 'I Won't Stop' , 'Love Suggestions' and 'Let's Take It Now'are jazz tinged soulful ballads or mid tempo songs to really get you in the mood. The covers of 'I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little more' and 'Baby I'm For Real' really work , but it is the more uptempo 'Something Special ' that will be popular with the modern soul dancers. Great album from a great artist now thankfully recovered from his illness.

TEENA MARIE – CONGO SQUARE CD £15.95
Teena's debut for Stax is really strong, her best for a long time. It features contemporary uptempo tracks like 'You Baby', 'The Pressure' and 'Milk N Honey' along with old school songs like the mid tem[po 'Can't Last A Day' ft Faith Evans. Mid tempo groovers like 'Congo Square' ft George Duke on keyboards, and 'Soldier' ft Shirley Murdoch, sit comfortably with the shuffling 'Baby I love You' and the ballad duet with Howard Hewitt 'Lover's Lane'. The jazzier 'Harlem blues and the ballads 'Ms Coretta' , 'Marry Me' and 'rose And Thorn give her more room to explore her vocal range, and there some nice orchestration by Paul Riser on the latter two. Really good album that will appeal to her large fan base.
ELLIS PHELPS AND WILLIAM SWANN – I'M STILL HERE CD £15.95
Excellent inspirational and uplifting gospel soul album featuring mainly mid tempo tracks with a very 'Maze' feel to it. It features the fantastic soulful voice of William Swann who even sounds like Frankie Beverley. 'Best Friends' is a brilliant slowish mid tempo track with great harmonies. 'Everybody' has more of a groove to it and a nice B-line. 'I'm Still Here is another good mid tempo groover. 'Time ft the vocals of Natalie Woodson and 'Back2U' will also keep the feet tapping amd there's an interestingly different cover of Bobby Caldwell's 'Do4Love' . Refreshingly different and more old school Soul with a capital S.
JONAS –WAITT (WE ARE IN THIS THING TOGETHER) CD/DVD £16.95
Danish soul singer Jonas scored with his last album, but 'Waitt' takes him to the next level and will really put him on the soul map. It is an excellent album with real instrumentation throughout, good songs and lyrics and featuring his great soulful voice. The mid tempo 'Two Time Love Is One' was co-written with the late David Lynden Hall has a really great feel to it. The melodic 'Electric', 'Time Is Working For You' and 'Not What You Want' are really nice, and 'crash Or Burn' , 'Hopes Are High', 'My Trust In You' and 'Too Close Too far' have good grooves. The killer track though is 'Sensational' a mid tempo groover co-written with Omar, which is a really beauty with a great hook and strings and all. Really good listening album. Contemporary Soul/R&B album filled with groove ridden tracks like 'Suns Out', 'Call It Good', 'Honeys Runnin' and the up tempo soul track 'The Tea'. The best tracks are the organic mid tempo 'The Blues' and the mellow mid tempo 'Grown Folks' and 'One Y'All'.
AINT IT FUNNY INTERLUDE/STONES SONG (HIDDEN TRACK)
HIL ST SOUL – RELEASE CD £13.95
This is basically a best of from one of the UK's finest contemporary soul singers of the past decade, with the addition of a new track the shuffling organic dancer 'Release'. The mid tempo groovers 'Hey Boy' 'Don't Forget The Ghetto', 'For Your Love', 'Wash Away' , 'Its Ok' and the more uptempo 'All That'
will keep the feet moving. The slower 'We Don't Talk' , 'Smile' and 'Broke Again' are also god but the killers are her hit cover of 'Until You Come Back To Me' and the beautiful duet with Dwele 'Baby Come Over'. Good overview of Hilary's career to date.
45 AKA SWING-O – REVENGE OF SOUL CD £29.95
This is an interesting album , a mixture of soul, hip hop and instrumentals but it does feature some great tracks. The best of the vocal tracks are 'Nothing Feels Better Than You' ft Jimmy Abney , the modern soul dancer 'I Believe' ft Stephanie Mc Kay, and the mid tempo 'The Dawn' ft Ryan Shaw. There's some good instrumentals incl the soul dancer 'Sweet Sweat (pt 2)', 'Soul 2 Sole' , the latinish 'Que Chevere' and the more laid back keyboard led 'Mysteries Journey', 'Another Place' and 'Revenge Of Soul'.
SPEEDOMETER – SOUL GROOVIN LIVE AT THE SOUL CELLAR CD £13.95
One of the best if not the best UK Funk group possess a rhythm and horn section that are almost as tight as the 70's Funk groups they base their sound on – JBs, Kool And TheGang, Mandrill etc. This live set captures the energy of their live sets, but sounds so strong that it could have been recorded in the studio. Ria Currie adds a female vocal (a la Alice Russell) on gems like 'What Am I Gonna Do' and the driving 'No Man Worries' as well as the cover of Vicki Anderson's 'Answer To Mother Popcorn'. It is the instrumentals where the band's quality shines with cuts like the Latin tinged scorcher 'Four Flights Up' the version of 'Kool & The Gang/ Let The Music Take Your Mind' and 'At The Speakeasy'. Excellent and as close to authentic 70's Funk as you can get.
FOUR 80 EAST – ROLL ON CD £16.95
Canadian Jazz Funk band release as et with an early 80's feel to many of the tracks. Check 'Roll On' and 'One Night Only'. Though not as full-on, these tracks have a not dissimilar feel to the recent Down To The Bone set.. The Hammond led Funk of 'Loosey Goosey' has a wicked sax solo and more like Four 80 East's earlier work. 'Race The Moon' has a more spaced out feel. The catchy 'Never The Same Way Twice' has a compulsive groove – wicked bass and melodic lead guitar.
MARCUS JOHNSON – POETICALLY JUSTIFIED CD £15.95
Smooth Jazz pianist Johnson has always had something else in his musical locker. He mixes up strong smooth grooves with fine Soul tunes and a funkier Fusion tinged edge. 'Poetically Justified' features four strong Soul style cuts, two feature Maysa's sultry tones ('Master Of My Heart' and the jazzier 'Hold On'). Two feature 80's Soul legend Miles Jaye and will appeal to his fans ('Capice' and 'Heaven'). Interspersed with the Soul are some fine instrumentals like 'Chillaxin', 'Ellicott City' and good covers of the Jacksons' 'This Place and John Legend 'Use to Love You'. Najee adds a delightful sax solo to the smooth 'I See You'.
VARIOUS ARTISTS – SOUND OF JAZZ FM 2009 VOL 1 DOUBLE CD £13.95
The second Smooth Jazz/ Soul compilation from the revived Jazz Fm label and this is an absolute corker of a compilation. 288 songs some not available elsewhere such as Mario Biondi's 'This Is What You Are' or hard to find like Kevin Whalum's 'Wonder Maze'. Bobby Lyle's 'Been So Long' and Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson's 'Never Wanna Say Goodnight' are hard to get on CD too. You have classics like Mystic Merlin's 'Just can't Give You Up', Ronnie Laws' 'Every Generation' and Pieces Of A Dream 'Warm Weather'. This volume is a well constructed selection of grooves.
CHICO HAMILTON – THE ALTERNATE DIMENSIONS OF EL CHICO EP £14.95
This EP/ mini album of 7 tracks comprises reworkings interpretations and remixes. The opener 'Simple Timeless' is performed by Fertile Ground and features the wonderful vocals of Navasha Daya - Soul Jazz magic personified. There are 2 great mixes of the Fusion classic 'Mysterious Maiden' the latter (Yin Yan Club mix) with a Bossa vibe that has the spirit of the original but adds a Latin spin to it. Mark De Clive-Lowe's remix of the exotic Eastern/ Spanish flavoured 'El Toro' is awesome. 'Elevation' has a Coltrane like feel, and his version of clausell's 'Je ka Jo' really works. One of the best remix projects of the past 10 years or so.
JUKKA ESKOLA – WALKOVER CD £29.95
Finnish trumpeter returns with an strong set of grooves. Jukka's inspiration as a player is Freddie Hubbard, both in tone and style. Grooves like 'Jova' and 'Chip N Charge' sound like Freddie circa early 70's CTI. 'Cadets' and the mellow swinging 'Dark Corner' are equally strong. Try also the Beni Melal version of 'El Aedaps'has a Schema like vibe to it – full on 60's style modal Jazz. A worthy follow-up to his superb debut.
QUASIMODE – GOLDEN WORKS BY QUASIMODE JAPANESE CD £27.95
The Quasimode crew return with a set of (mainly) remixes. The sound is in the tradition of Japanese Jazz/ Quasimode. Highlights include 'Take The New Frontiers' featuring Valerie Etienne, 'Love Theme from Spartacus' – vocal version and 'Love Is Everywhere'. 'Tune Up' is a exquisite track remixed by them, whilst their twist on 'New York Afternoon' is superb too.

KYLE EASTWOOD – METROPOLITAN CD £16.95
This superb Jazz album, shows why Clint's son has established a fine reputation as a bass player and jazz musician. This very Herbie Hancock sounding set traverses many different styles of Jazz. 'Metropolitan' is a powerful trumpet led, part scat vocal atmospheric upbeat cut. Eastwood infuses 'Hot Box' with a Headhunters like bass part. 'Samba De Paris' is a fine Freddie Hubbard like cut and very jazzy, whilst 'Le Balai' has a soulful Jazz Funk groove. On the vocal side, the gritty 'Live For Life' adds a dose of Funk. Exceptional.
HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE – HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE CD £12.95/ LP £15.95
This unusual album is built around a large brass horn section that plays the lead melody plus basslines. 'Alyo', 'Flipside' and 'War' are fine funky Jazz grooves. The double quick 'Party Started' has layered horn lines that interweave and the guys blow! The intricate horn arrangements drive the slower 'Sankofa' coupled with wicked on the one drums, whilst the aptly titled 'Hypnotic' is just that. Lovers of brassy funky Jazz will love this unique set.
MULATU ASTATKE/ THE HELIOCENTRICS CD £13.95
Mulatu (better known as Mulatu Of Ethiopia) recorded several collectable albums back in the 70's; he has now linked up with the Heliocentrics to record this intriguing and interesting album. The mix of East Africa flavours – horns, rhythms, themes permeates tracks like 'Cha Cha', 'Addis Black Widow' and 'Mulatu'. They also have hints of Jazz and are quite hypnotic – check also the percussive riff laden 'Live From The Tigre Lounge'. It is the horns that give the music it hypnotic flavour and nowhere is this better illustrated than on the haunting 'Dewel'. Try the Coltrane flavoured 'Anglo Ethio Suite'.
PAULA ATHERTON – GROOVE WITH ME CD £15.95
Saxophonist Paula Atherton is on point with this set of mellow grooves. 'Whenever You Come Around' and the vocal version of 'There Ain't Nothing' are smooth jazzy Soul. On the smooth side check the funky 'JB' and the flute led Latin tinged 'Marimba Island'. Even smoother grooves 'Light As Air', 'Block Party', 'Funk It Up', 'Block Party' and the slower vocal 'Say It Baby' are also on point. This album is consistently good, with strong meloides and hooks plus a groove to it. Quality Smooth Jazz.

CRUSADERS – IMAGES CD £12.95
Possibly Images is the last truly great Crusaders album comprising seven instrumental pieces. It was bassman's Pops Popswell's last album with the group; he wrote the classic 'Cosmic Reign' for the album – a tight Jazz Funk groove with jazzy overtones. 'Snowflake' is a lighter cut, whilst 'Fairy Tales' and the popular sample 'Bayou Bottoms' and 'Marcella's Dream' are all strong tracks. In fact every track is quality. The band's ensemble playing is tight and the solos (especially Joe Sample) are fine. Brilliant.
GROVER WASHINGTON JR – A SECRET PLACE CD £12.95
From 1977, this album was a bit of change of direction for Grover. Out went the orchestrated arrangements of Bob James, and in came a sparser sound courtesy of Dave Matthews' arrangements. 'A Secret Place' is a wonderful mid-tempo Jazz Funk cut with our man and Dave Grusin delivering superb solos. 'Not Yet' has as understated intro that builds into a funky slice of Fusion. Again Grusin, Grover (on tenor) and Eric Gale share the solos, and is underpinned by Anthony Jackson's wicked bass and Harvey Mason's tight drumming. 'Love Makes It Better' is mellower, whilst Herbie Hancock's 'Dolphin Dance' adds an atmospheric Jazz feel.
ROY AYERS – VIRGO RED CD £12.95
From 1973, at this time Roy could do no wrong. From '72 to '80 just about every album was either 'on it' or had a classic or several on it. Grooves like the compulsive 'Brother Louie' and the instrumental belter 'Des Nudes Soul' are funky and Fusion of the highest quality. The uptempo take on 'Love From The Sun' features Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. 'Virgo Red' and the 2 Step paced 'Giving Love' (Leroy Hutson penned/Voices of East Harlem track) add variety to an ultra strong Roy Ayers album. VIEW ALL TITLES FOR THIS ARTIST

MICKEY STEVENSON – HERE I AM CD £9.95
1972 album from former Motown Producer with two bonus tracks. Highlights are the Leon Ware written songs, the modern soul dancer 'Trouble's A Loser' , the mid tempo 'Stormy' and the ballads 'Knock On My Door' and 'What Could Make It Better'. Gonna Be Alright' and I'm On My Way back To You' are more uptempo in an Invictus production style. There's also a few nice country soul ballads like 'Forty Days and Forty Nights' . Nice little known early 70's Soul.
GLORIA SCOTT –WHAT AM I GONNA DO CD £13.95
This Classic Barry White and Tom Brock production from 1974. is available on CD again. It includes the modern soul dancer 'A Case Of Too Much Lovemaking' a fantastic uplifting track. The similar tempo 'That's What You Say' and 'What Am I Gonna Do' are also very good. Also check the ballads 'Love Me Love Me Love Or Leave me Leave Me Leave Me' and 'I Just Can't Say Goodbye'. Great soul album.

BOB JAMES – VERY BEST OF DBL CD £12.95
26 track compilation that covers his CTI classics, his own Tappan Zee work. Bob has a very distinctive and delicate piano style that presaged Smooth Jazz. The much sampled 'Westchester Lady', 'Nautilus', 'Take Me To The Mardi Gras, 'Heads' and 'Storm King' are Jazz Funk classics. Patti Austin adds a sublime vocal to Bob's take on 'Feel Like Making Love'. 'Heads', 'Angela (theme From Taxi) and the collaboration with David Sanborn 'Maputo' also feature.
WILLIE BOBO – HELL OF AN ACT TO FOLLOW/BOBO CD £12.95 NOW IN
Percussionist Willie's two great jazz funk albums from 1978 and '79 together on one CD. 'Hell of an Act ' was produced by Wayne Henderson and features a great line up incl Bobby Lyle, Ernie Watts etc. it includes his big jazz funk club hit and possibly definitive version of Ronnie Laws 'Always There' both in album and 12” remix versions. Also there's 'Keep That Same Old Feeling' the uptempo 'Sixty-Two Fifty' and a good vocal version of 'Dindi'. 'Bobo' is a more vocal album featuring Errol Knowles on the great 2-stepper 'Comin Over Me' and uptempo dancer 'Reason For Livin' with Willie more to the fore on 'Palos'.
JACKIE LEE – MIRWOOD MASTERS CD £13.95
Northern soul hero Jackie was one half the Bob And Earl, and he made some great uptempo records for Mirwood in the mid 60's. The most notable are 'Do The Temptation Walk', 'Your Person-a-l-i-t-y ' The Duck', 'Would You Believe' , 'Oh My Darlin' , 'Harlem Shuffle' and 'Dancing In The Street'. There are also the ballad duets with Delores Hall 'Whether It Is Right Or Wrong' and 'baby I'm Satisfied' amongst the 28 tracks featured here. Good uptempo 60's Soul.
At last Freddie's Columbia albums have been released on CD. High Energy is from '74 and is funky as any contemporary sets includes the heavy 'Baraka Sasa' and 'Camel Rise'. Check also the re-working of 'Crisis' in a funky style, the beautiful 'Ebony Moonbeams' and a full throttle take on Stevie's 'Too High'. 'Liquid Love' is a fine Jazz Funk set with the Fusion 'Liquid Love', the Headhunters-ish 'Kuntu' and the jazzy and funky 'Lost Dreams' being highlights – check Henry Franklin's bass on this! Serious grooves! 'Skagly' from 1980 has that Headhunters feel on the title track and features the studio version of 'Happiness Is Now'- a joyful explosive piece of Hubbard magic.
