“Close Lobsters – Firestation Towers: 1986 – 1989 (Fire Records) 3LP 12″” in Wrap + Download (3 individual 12″” LPs in heavy outer sleeve wrap with download cards for all three.

Pick of the class of the NME’s C86, the Lobsters were an altogether different proposition from the rest. They were not twee. Nor were they one of those jangly indie bands whose main purpose in life was to sound like a pale imitation of The Byrds. More for them was the guitar tumble of the Flamin’ Groovies, honed down into three minute bursts of off-kilter pop songs whose closest relations are the old gems of the Only Ones. The guitars howl/bite as they should and the vocals yelp their acerbic imprint on spangling melodies, which rush at you head-long with a verve not seen since early Scottish Eighties outings. Situated quite splendidly somewhere between trash, thrash, pop and jangle, Close Lobsters made a critical impact in the US and recently reformed for a number of shows.

This package includes the original LP releases of ‘Foxheads Stalk This Land’, ‘Headache Rhetoric’ and for the first time ‘Forever Until Victory, The Singles Collection’.

“ESG – The Moody EP (Fire Records) 12″” EP (45rpm Green, Blue and yellow splatter vinyl with download code.
An exclusive 12” single of how the Moody EP was meant to be. It’s the early 1980’s in the Bronx and the Scroggins sisters are in the middle of their foot-stomping post-punk best. The ‘You’re No Good’ 7inch was spinning on the turntables and the clap beats and freaky bass of UFO was taking ESG out of this world but it was Moody’s beat that everyone was dancing to. Now on a three colour splatter vinyl pressing, ‘Moody’ and it’s spaced out edit are joined by ‘You’re No Good’ and ‘UFO’ for a one off pressing that will have DJs across the world clambering for a slice of ESG.

“Giant Sand – Beyond the Valley of Rain (Fire America) 2LP with download card (2LP in wide-spine outer with liner notes by Howe Gelb and download card. Features previously unreleased audio.

Howe Gelb has travelled many a long and dusty mile to get to his place of prominence as an elder statesman of freewheeling Americana and “”Erosion Rock””; a brand of music changing with the elements on a daily basis as nature intended, like Giant Sand, believing that continuous evolution should be a palpable element in music, as when songs were first handed over again and again, before the frozen capture of a recording studio.

Born in 1956, Howe had moved to Tucson, Arizona, as a teen in the early 1970s after his home was destroyed by a flood back in Pennsylvania. When not on the road, he lives with his family in Barrio Santa Rosa. Although “”Endlessly restlessly wanderlusted encrusted””, he’s well settled in the desert caliche where it takes him an hour to dig a small hole in the desert floor, there where the sunrise hurts.

In 1980, Gelb formed the post punk band Giant Sandworms, with his close friend Rainer Ptacek, the renowned slide guitarist and beloved Tucson icon. Rainer died from brain cancer in 1997, and you can’t talk long with Gelb without his name coming up.

Giant Sand emerged in 1983 and released that group’s debut album, ‘Valley of Rain’ in 1985. In the 25 years since, he has released an estimated 40 albums or so as Giant Sand, collecting his players and bands in Denmark and Spain, and another with a full gospel choir attached in Canada, but they call his music Americana anyway. Howe just says he’s “”from Earth””.

Now ‘Beyond the Valley of Rain’ brings you ‘Valley of Rain’ on one LP, as originally intended. The second disc features ‘Giant Sandworms’ on the radio, KXCI to be precise, back in 1993, and Giant Sand performing at Vera in Groningen, Holland in 1986 and includes two songs written and performed by Rainer, ‘Funny How Time slips Away’ and ‘Round and Round’. Two instrumental live tracks, ‘Meet Me in the Morning’ and ‘Roofs on Fire’ are too long for the LP, so are brought to you via a download, along with all the audio on wax.

With liner notes written especially for this 30th anniversary release by Howe.

“Half Japanese – Volume 3: 1990-1995 (Fire Records) 3LP 12″” in Wrap + Download (3 individual 12″” LPs in heavy outer sleeve wrap with download code. This is the third instalment of Half Japanese reissues series, which started with the RSD exclusive ‘Half Gentlemen/Not Beasts’.
This 3LP wrap set contains the 3LPs ‘We Are They Who Ache With Amorous Love’, ‘Fire In The Sky’ and ‘Hot’ in their original form contained within heavy board wide spine wrap. Featuring new original paper cutting artwork from Jad Fair and liner notes by David Fair. Half Japanese are by now as influential as can be with Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Teenage Fanclub all singing their praises, and the recent documentary bringing the band wider exposure from the underground that housed them for so many years. ‘We Are They Who Ache With Amorous Love’ is explosive and noisy, whilst 1992’s ‘Fire in The Sky’ turns at once more delicate and, dare we say, jangly. ‘Hot’ arrived in 1995 and was MTVs album of the week on release, with Michael Goldbery writing “Hot, that mixes Sonic Youth-style noise, Stooges primitivism and ’60s pop with excellent results. “Lucky Ones” is a simply charming number (“A good thing just got better/ As better as better can be”) reminiscent of Jonathan Richman, while “Drum Straight” is dose of feedback drenched skonk and “Vampire” rocks hard liken the Sonic’s “Bull In The Heather.”

A download code covers all the audio, and includes that which arrived on later CD formats.

“Jean-Paul Sartre Experience – I Like Rain: The Story of The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience (Fire Records) 3LP 12″” in Wrap + Download (Three individual 12″” LPs in heavy outer sleeve wrap with download code. Re-mastered and containing rare and previously unreleased bonus material, this comprehensive release covers the legendary New Zealand band’s work, including original vinyl releases of ‘Love Songs’ and ‘The Size of Food’ and for the first time, ‘Bleeding Star’, with CD releases of each containing singles, b-sides and demo material.

Jean-Paul Sartre Experience formed in the suburbs of Christchurch in late ’84. In 1985, they gate crashed the Flying Nun Records Christmas bash, shortly after, their demo was released on vinyl.

‘Love Songs’ arrived in 1987 and was released two years later in the US on the Communion label. Intelligent, dreamy and demonstrating melodies that most bands could only hope to write, the band moved to Auckland for the recording of ‘The Size of Food’, which saw a combined worldwide release. With a slightly darker view on things, their second album split opinion, but the talent was no less. There was more fuzz now, and the volume a little louder, but with likens to both the velvets and R.E.M. JPSE created effortless pop melodies peppered with rare, exciting new sounds.

‘Bleeding Star’ was released in 1993, and after a change in personnel, is pure pop prowess. Sumptuous sonic textures and tall layers of warming guitar made sure Jean-Paul Sartre Experience left us with their realised musical ambition. Whilst certainly not as recognised as the Jesus and Mary Chain and the likes, they definitely represent a certain time in music, and with this collection, we hope to see the music of Jean-Paul Sartre experience brought to new ears.

Bonus material via download code. ‘Masked and Taped’ EP, ‘Bo Diddley’ b-side, and all the B-sides to the ‘Bleeding Star’ singles.

“Pulp – Freaks (Fire Records) 12″” LP + Download (12” Red Vinyl. Includes Download Code.

Pulp’s 1987 album ‘Freaks’ is pressed on exclusively limited red vinyl as part of the Fire Pulp RSD 2015 collection with a special 2 disc release, with the second bonus disc packed with singles and b-sides from the Freaks era.

Pulp had changed significantly since their debut ‘It’. By this time every member bar Jarvis had moved on but the addition of Russell Senior proved to be a pivotal turning point for the band. No longer did Pulp sound pastoral, easy-natured; now they were darkly romantic, brooding, noisy and a little bit Gothic, in the way young folk who brush their hair a certain way are always a little bit Gothic. Pulp were out-of-tune with the times: but the times didn’t satisfy Pulp.

The album is quite marvellous. Most of these songs stand the distance of time: it was here, possibly even more than 1992’s Separations, that Pulp started coming into their own as a band with a fully-realised aesthetic.

The first disc is the original album, unaltered and in its entirety. The second is a bonus disc comprising of tracks from the two big non-album singles from the same era, ‘Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)’ and ‘Dogs are Everywhere’. Two further b-sides ‘Tunnel’ and ‘Manon’ complete the second disc for the definitive ‘Freaks’ period release.

“Pulp – Separations (Fire Records) 12″” LP + Download (12” Green vinyl. Includes Download Code.
Continuing the complete Pulp RSD 2015 collection, their third and last album for the Fire.
By 1992 Pulp had already transformed from their debut ‘It’ through the dark electronic phase of ‘Freaks’ and were garnering significant momentum. Now critically acclaimed and with a live reputation matched by only a few, most of the songs on ‘Separations’ sound fully-realised in that undeniably Pulp manner that was soon to be experienced everywhere. And, for the first time, there was an inescapable disco pulse. This is the transition album where Pulp, caught between a doomed romantic outsider past and an acid-bright future, made an album that brilliantly reflects both.

Beautifully re-mastered, repackaged, pressed on green vinyl, and with liner notes by Everett True, the download coad includes four bonus tracks, including ‘Death Goes To The Disco’, ‘Is This House’, as well as an extended version of the single ‘Countdown’ and the previously unreleased ‘Death Comes To Town’.

‘Separations’ spawned two of Pulps most successful singles to date in ‘Countdown’ and ‘My Legendary Girlfriend’, with the latter topping the singles of 1991 lists by major music publications.

It’s 1985 and now two years since Pulp, a little known yet determined band from Sheffield, UK, released their debut album ‘It’. Carrying in much the same optimistic tone, the 7inch single continues to show Jarvis Cocker’s playful and charismatic song writing ability that blessed an unconventional debut album. “Pulp – It (Fire Records) 12″” LP + Download (12” white vinyl. Includes Download Code.
Pulp’s 1983 debut ‘It’ is exclusively released on limited white vinyl as the starting point in the Pulp RSD2015 collection. ‘It’ comes complete with additional bonus material via download code and includes liner-notes by Everett True.

As one of their most honest recordings, ‘It’ captures a band at the very beginning of their startling career. It is a gentle, mainly acoustic album, hinting at the musical directions Pulp would later pursue. The record touches on the majestic, theatrical ballads of Scott Walker as well as the stark, folky song-poems of Leonard Cohen. Produced by a young band in the process of pinpointing their direction, the album has aged beautifully into a charming collection.

The reissue features a download code to four Bonus tracks, including single version of ‘My Lighthouse’, an alternative mix of ‘Blue Girls’, as well as the rare ‘Sink Or Swim’ and ‘Please Don’t Worry’ from Pulp’s John Peel session in 1981.

‘They Suffocate At Night’ was the first single in the build up to the release of ‘Freaks’, Pulps first album to be recorded whilst signed to Fire. By this time every member bar Jarvis had moved on but the addition of Russell Senior proved to be a pivotal turning point for the band. Sigmatropic – Every Soul Is A Boat (Tongue Master Records) 12″ + DL (12” Orange vinyl – 1,000 units worldwide. Not available on any other formats. Features Mick Harvey (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) & Jim White (US Artist). Despite the limited amount of releases under the guise of SIGMATROPIC band, the moniker for musician Akis Boyatzis, there has been a very lengthy list of guest appearances from a very diverse array of artists on most releases. On the 2003 opus ‘ Sixteen Haiku & Other Stories ‘ alone, eighteen amazing musicians graced this astonishing Folktronica Soundscape in memory of the Nobel Laureate George Seferis. To introduce yourself as a relative newcomer ,with an international release, and with guest vocalist such as Robert Wyatt, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Alejandro Escovedo, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Cat Power, John Grant, Mark Eitzel, Howe Gelb & Steve Wynn – to name a few – is no mean feat. For this limited edition Record Store Day ditty, Akis Boyatzis unveils 5 tracks, for which he sings on 3. Once again, SIGMATROPIC manage to attract guests vocalists that appear on music far removed from their customary treadmills. The other tracks have 2 great & diverse guests contributing on the vocal duties: Ex-(Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) & Australian legend Mick Harvey & US Southern Alternative Country great Jim White. Always hard to describe & pinpoint the music of SIGMATROPIC: It fluctuates from Rock to Electronica with elements of twinkled upbeat Mediterranean whirls & woozy summery melancholia. This 12-inch EP is a breezy platter, with Mick Harvey singing a commanding & very catchy tune (‘Every Soul Is A Boat ‘) & Akis Boyatzis does justice to the 12-inch vinyl vibe with a real thumper (‘Noon & Midnight’). Jim White, adds some Southern warmth, and some surprise family members on spooky vocals, with a dreamy & majestic finale on (‘The Throne In Your Heart ‘). And all this under the steady hand of Bristol resident and very accomplished all rounder, John Parish (P J Harvey) who mixed this EP; making it once again a truly international affair for SIGMATROPIC. Mastered at Abbey Road by Alex Wharton. “Various Artists – The First Rock n Roll Record (Famous Flames Recording Company Limited) 4LP + 7inch + 3CD + download Box (From the first use of the word “”rock””, to the hybrid of “”rocking and rolling””, every track tells a story at the count down to the end of the ’50s. The first release on Famous Flames, ‘The First Rock And Roll Record’ is an extensive collection that traces the very roots of the term rock ‘n’ roll, previously available on CD, and now covering 4LPs with the CD included along with a secret 7inch allowing you to discover what we believe to be the first Rock and Roll record. The journey began, we believe, at a religious camp meeting in 1916, before travelling far and wide and stealing from everyone. This set gathers together the music that first mentioned the words “”rock”” and “”roll””, alongside the many styles that were infused into the genre’s revolutionary sound to create the eventual marriage of everything from hillbilly soul to jazz, blues and RnB which culminated in worldwide hits including ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ and ‘Rock Around The Clock’. Long before Alan Freed uttered those immortal words, its formula was the stuff of much conversation. ‘The First Rock And Roll Record’ continues that trend. It is not only a hefty collection but also an ongoing debating point, a central theme to a growing online discussion. The 4LP set traces the evolution of rock ‘n roll music, from blues, jazz, swing, RnB, Gospel, bluegrass barrelhouse boogie woogie and western swing through interlinking and overlapping scenes. The 69 tracks display a lineage that was discussed at length in the out of print book What Was The First Rock ‘n’ Roll Record? by Jim Dawson and Steve Propes and in essays that have appeared over the years in MOJO, The Times and The Guardian. Each source threw up new titles and new connections which have been gathered together on this extensive set with on additional set of downloadable tracks which complete the full 50 songs from Dawson and Propes’ book’s original list alongside more than 50 additions which soundtrack the birth of a musical form. And, this epic tale will run and run. It continues to be the subject of heated discussion.

A hefty 69 track collection over 4 LPs, with 26 further tracks to consider via the 3CD release and download card makes 95 tracks in total…all of them potentially being ‘the First Rock and Roll Record’.

The Lovely Eggs – This Is Our Nowhere (Lovely Eggs Records) LP (Special black and white coloured vinyl with download code. Brand new album from The Lovely Eggs, vinyl exclusive to RSD. Surrealists of the Great British Underground scene The Lovely Eggs return in 2015 with a new single, album and two UK tours. The oddball D.I.Y punk rock pair have been selling out venues across the country without the help of management, booking agent or record label support. And true to form they return with their fourth self-produced and self-recorded album ‘This is Our Nowhere’: a title which sums up their celebration and love of a scene which doesn’t exist in the eyes of the manufactured mainstream. The Lovely Eggs have been relative outsiders to the music industry since 2006 with their unrelenting touring, single and album releases. But their “fuck it” attitude and DIY punk rock spirit has won the hearts of many fans, gaining them an increasingly loyal live following as well as huge support from DJs at BBC 6 Music, Radio One and XFM where they have recorded sessions for all three stations. ‘This Is Our Nowhere’ cements their reputation as one of the most exciting, innovative and genuine bands on the Great British Underground scene. With songs firmly set in the hum drum of everyday life, The Lovely Eggs turn normality on its head, squeezing it through their peculiar surreal mincing machine and blending it with fuzzed out guitar and crashing drums. For Holly and David being in a band is a way of life. And they approach it in a unique way laughing in the face of life’s absurdities. They are a rallying point for anyone that sees life for what it is. A mess. A wonderful, car crash of experiences, greeting each new chance with a cheeky grin, a sneer and a big fuck you to the pricks. Released on the band’s own label Egg Records on May 4th (with a special black and white coloured vinyl limited edition release for Record Store Day on April 18th) ‘This Is Our Nowhere’ brings an essential addition to an already impressive discography, with lead single from the album ‘Magic Onion’ providing a raucous punked up psyche trip of nonsensical perfection. The band will head out on a 10 date UK tour on March 19th before embarking on another set of UK dates at the start of May. Track listing : 1. Ordinary People Unite 2. Do It To Me 3.Music 4. Goofin’ Around (In Lancashire) 5. Slinking of the Strange 6. The Investment 7. Magic Onion 8. I Nearly Saw a Stabbing Last Night 9. Cilla’s Teeth 10. Forest of Memories)

Stack Waddy – Bugger Off Two (The Strawberry Studios Out-Takes) (Ozit Dandelion) LP (LP 180 gram coloured vinyl 500 units only. Record Store Day 2015 500 LPs only world wide of this previously unreleased 1970’s material 180 gram coloured vinyl. Previously unreleased 1970s studio out take material from Manchester’s Hairy legends Stack Waddy who played punk before punk was invented but were also blues , heavy rock, progressive, psychedelic etc – just music with balls. Loved by hippies, bikers, punks, plus music biz people like Steve Albini , Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and of course John Peel. A beautiful new gatefold Stack Waddy sleeve design by legendary Liverpool sleeve and music art designer Steve Jacuzzi Hardstaff ( he designed for Led Zeppelin in the 1970s) in the style of American underground comics. Andy Gill on Stack Waddy “if you’ve a penchant for sludgy proto-heavy metal in the vein of Black Sabbath. Then this is the band” // John Peel on Stack Waddy “their attitude was apalling but wonderful at the same time, they gave me a certain amount of grief but I have to say I really liked them. Their antics make even the most outrageous punk bands that came later seem so tame. They just played the same in the studio as they did live, hard loud and alcohol infused” // )

The Animals – We’re Gonna Howl Tonight (Rhythm and Blues) LP (180gm LP limited to 2000 copies worldwide. Unlike most of the London-based, middle class art school types adopting the blues, the Animals came from a tough working class area of Newcastle. Despite their somewhat scruffy appearance and what appeared to be homemade haircuts, their pure gutsy performances went down a storm around the UK. This album taken from live sessions broadcast in 1964 finds the group in fine fettle and features recordings from that first successful year when they sounded so fresh and exciting. Here they are playing blues standards by the likes of Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker and Chuck Berry, just like they did when they cut their debut self-titled LP that same year. They’re gonna howl tonight! All tracks in Mono. Side One: 1. We´Re Gonna Howl Tonight 2. Baby What’s Wrong 3. Rosie 4. I Can’t Believe It 5. Work Song 6. Gonna Send You Back To Georgia 7. Dimples.
