Albums of The Month – May 2016

Some great releases again this month headed by the inimitable Gregory Porter who once again delivers a faultless set that will expand both his existing fan base and those yet to fully discover this unique talent. The ever busy Snarky Puppy provide us with yet another top album while Natasha Watts has followed up her debut with another sparkling set of well  crafted tunes. Soul Brother favourite Marcell Russell teams up with Teddy Douglas to produce a great bit of ‘Retro Soul’ while Tristan are back with their third album.

The Doggett Brothers have come back with a stunning set of bright, mainly dance grooves, Mayer Hawthorn lays down a set of breezy, west coast inspired 80s throwback grooves that we are loving at the moment while vintage Texan act The Relatives are back with a new album of old style funk and soul. Don’t miss Al Castellana’s VINYL only Souliedoscopic Love offering while Corinne Bailey Rae and Robin McKelle produced mature and long awaited follow ups.

On the reissue and compliation side, Chuck Brown’s ‘Bustin Loose’ is a good revisit, there’s a great focus on the Independents’ Wand output while the ‘lost’ Rasputin’s Stash album is now here to be enjoyed. Eleanore Mills is a rare album on original so nothing better than an affordable reissue and also on our label (due in a few weeks) is the rare Madcliff album from Players Association man Chris Hills – cooming on CD and Ltd Edition LP.
The expansive Emotions anthology is a great spotlight on how many killer tunes the girls were involved with, Giles Peterson looks into the MPS vaults and pulls out some gems while the Mainstream Modern Soul collection focuses on that label and it’s offshoots on a great compilation.
