TOP SOUL ALBUMS OF 2004

ANTOINIQUE - INTRODUCING   Review

This sassy lady combines strong vocals, with hard hitting lyrics and a funky attitude. The music fuses contemporary Soul with 70's influences (Funk, Philly and jazzy undertones).
There are so many outstanding tracks, but check the awesome 'Phenomenon', the lovely 'Fell In Love', the 'tell how it is' 'Blue' and the gorgeously seductive 'Sweeter'. The bouncy 'Sunshine' concludes an album full of strong songs and wicked bass lines. THIS ALBUM IS ESSENTIAL.

JILL SCOTT BEAUTIFULLY HUMAN  Review

Jill's most complete musical statement to date, this fine album oozes class, strong lyrics and a 'down home' feel that lives up to the title. Neo/organic grooves 'Golden', and the funky Jazz style of 'Bedda At Home' compliment tracks like the warm mid-tempo Soul ballad 'Family Reunion' and the riff laden 'Rasool'. And the album gets better every time you listen to it. View all Jill Scott Titles

AMP FIDDLER WALTZ OF THE GHETTO FLY   Review

Amp's Soul tunes enjoy an infusion of 70's Funk (tinges of Sly, P Funk & Prince). Songs like 'I Believe In You', the quirky 'Superficial' and the infectious 'Eye To Eye' are incessant Soul grooves whilst 'Love And War' adds a Latin flavour and 'Possibilities' takes a mellower almost Blackbyrds influenced route. Inventive, brilliant work of genius View all Amp Fiddler Titles

TRINA BROUSSARD SAME GIRL  Review

Her first 'released' album has been long awaited. In part produced by Steve Harvey and that assures quality on this mix of Soul with slight RnB touches. Check the lovely 'Dreaming Of One', the riff laden 'Joy' the jaunty 'Thinking About Cha' and the organic 'These Are The Days'. Her powerful vocals seem perfectly at home regardless of the style.

GWENDOLYN JOY LOVE IS   Review

Super album that just gets better every time you listen. Her sweet voice, not unlike Jean Carne at times, is perfectly suited to tracks like the gorgeous jazzy floater 'What I See In You', the organic 'Vanilla Tree' and the Marvin tinged 'Up And Down'.

MAYSA SMOOTH SAILING  Review

Incognito's premier female lead delivers her fourth album that is full of strong songs and performances. 'Hypnotic Love', 'Smooth Sailing;' and the duet with Ledisi 'Scat World' all hit the spot, whilst the Bluey produced 'Where Have You Been' adds an Incognito flavour, but also check the Club 1600's tracks 'Angel and 'Give Love A Chance'.

TEMPTATIONS LEGACY  Review

Steve Harvey produced several tracks on the Temps strongest album in decades. 'Still Tempting' the 2 step 'Something Special and the Whitfield-esq 'Round Here' are highlights on this fine album that shows the world's greatest vocal harmony group at their best.

VAN HUNT  Review

Van has been compared to the likes of Curtis, Marvin and Prince! A pedigree that this talented singer and songwriter lives up to. 'Hello Goodbye', 'Seconds Of Pleasure' and the groove driven 'Down Here In Hell' are testament to this young man's talent, who has managed to forge a unique style of his own.

INCOGNITO - ADVENTURES IN BLACK SUNSHINE   Review

Incognito's 2nd Dome album is a gem. Bluey excels as only he can (Incognito only record great albums). Check 'Everything Your Heart Desires', 'Principles Of Love', the brilliant mid-tempo 'Fences And Barriers', the Afro-Beat 'Mindin My Business', and the dancer 'The World Is Mine'. Superb album finds Maysa returning to the fold.

VARIOUS ARTISTS SOUL TOGETHERNESS 2004  Review

Fifth in this excellent series based upon the tunes that are at the 'Togetherness' weekenders. Tunes like the late and great Rick James' 'Taste' plus classics like Flowers' 'For Real' are modern Soul gems, whilst contributions from Trina Broussard, the Sunburst Band, Mike Jimenez and Bill Harris sustain the high standard this series has set. LEROY HUTSON - HUTSON 1  Review

One of the top five or six Soul albums ever! High praise but when you listen to the orchestrations on 'All Because Of You' or the Rare Groove anthem 'Lucky Fellow' it is hard to fathom how Leroy isn't mentioned in the same breath as Marvin, Stevie or Curtis. His touch, songwriting and arrangements are mercurial; every Soul collection should have one! View all Leroy Hutson Titles

MTUME & LUCAS - BEST OF   Review

Mtume and Lucas were hot in the early 80's and this 15 track comp documents some of their most impressive productions including Stephanie Mills 'What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin', Phyllis Hyman 'You Know How To Love Me' & Mtume's 'Juicy Fruit'. Lesser known gems incl Mtume's 2 Step giant 'Love Lock', Lou Rawls 'Now Is The Time For Love', Spinners 'Got To Be Love' & Gary Bartz 'Keep On Goin'.

ANN SEXTON - ANTHOLOGY   Review

Fine appreciation of this under-rated and under-appreciated singer. If you want to hear the kind of Soul from which Joss Stone (Joss sounds uncannily like Ann) has derived inspiration. Northern Soul, Deep Soul, 2 Step and Funk gems litter this excellent compilation. Soul with a capital S.

INTUIT  - INTUIT Review

This album combines Latin, Afrobeat and Spiritual Jazz elements in a kaleidoscope of styles. Andy Bey adds his soulful bluesy vocals to the version of Doug Carn's 'Western Sunrise and on 'Planet Birth'. Doug Carn guests on the Afrobeat tinged 'Fenytola', whilst 'Let It Flee' is a soulful cut. This album hits on the Latin side, Afro fused funky Jazz and on a spiritual level and encapsulates Jazz in 2004.

GERARDO FRISINA - HI NOTE  Review

Inspired by the sounds of 60's Blue Note, this album is full of strong Jazz grooves. So many great tracks like the hard-hitting 'Inviolatin', 'Cubana', 'Zambele', 'Sophisticated Samba' and 'Heading For What I Know'. If you like Horace Silver, Hank Mobley and Art Blakey…this album is Jazz Dance heaven

ROY HARGROVE - STRENGTH EP   Review

Follow-up to 2003's fabulous 'Hard Groove', this funky Jazz set is a favourite at Soul Brother towers! Not hard to hear why, with the barnstormer 'For Fun' featuring Omar, the awesome party track 'Universe', the Afrobeat 'Rich Man's Welfare', the great soulful title song and a wicked take on 'Listen Here'. This band is as tight and funky as any contemporaries. Awesome.

NICOLA CONTE - OTHER DIRECTIONS   Review

Inspired by 60's Blue Note, this album takes you on a musical journey through Hard Bop, Modal and Latin Jazz. The Koop-like vocal 'Kind Of Sunshine' is probably the stand-out, but check the tough 'Impulso', the driving 'Nefertiti', and the wonderful 'Aphrodite's Dream', plus the tight 'The Dharma Bums'

DOWN TO THE BONE - CELLAR FUNK  Review

Typically funky Jazz dance from DTTB with blistering cuts like 'I'll Always Hold You Close' and the Latin tinged 'Dancing To A Samba' feat Guida Da Palma and 'The Flow' feat Flora Purim taking the groove higher, also check the JB tinged 'Global Village'.

FERTILE GROUND - BLACK IS   Review

'Black Is' is probably the finest Jazz track of 2004, but this album is an inspiration with the dancer 'Livin The Light', the beautiful 'Yellow Daisies', the riff laden 'Changing Woman' and the Afro influenced 'Spirit World' lifting the listener to an higher plane. Natasha Daya's vocals personify Soul, Jazz. Awesome.

BONEY JAMES - PURE Review

Boney's pedigree when it comes to Smooth Jazz leaves no question. His soulful sax playing is equally at home on funky takes like 'Stone Groove' and the smooth 'Pure' as it is on Soul orientated songs like 'Better With Time' (feat Bilal) and the dreamy 'Break Of Dawn' with Dwele.

NORMAN BROWN WEST COAST COOLIN  Review

Guitarist Brown strikes a fine balance between Smooth Jazz, classic Fusion and 'neo' Soul. Brown's Benson like playing finds itself in war surroundings on 'Up N At Em', the flowing 'Let's Play' and the pleasant cover of 'What's Going On'.

Combination of the highly talented Dego, Kaidi and Dazique, this album has everything literally eclectic from the dancefloor orientated 'Getaway' to 'Future Rage' and 'Super Amazing' + Bembe Seque (Sleepwalker/Two Banks Of Four) on 'You Know It. If you like the experimental end of Agent K?

TOP JAZZ REISSUES OF 2004

VARIOUS - AFRICAN SPIRITS   Review

This album was 5 years in the making, the album derives its title from the inspiration that Jazz musicians have received from Africa. As Afro American's awareness of their roots spread in the 60's/70's then Jazz reflected this development. Tracks like Nation's urgent 'Children' or Archie Shepp's reflective 'Song For Mozambique' and Pharoah Sanders seminal 'Our Roots began In Africa' and Moe Koffman's 'Days Gone By' (sampled by Jill Scott) emphasize the intensity of this inspiration.

GARY BARTZ - ANTHOLOGY   Review

This major figure in progressive funky Jazz in the 70's, Gary recorded tunes that seemed to epitomize their epoch. Andy Bey's vocals on 'Celestial Blues' seem not of this world, whilst 'I've Known Rivers' accentuates the eternal character of this music. Gary's 'Music Is My Sanctuary' transcends Soul, Jazz and everything else. 12 tracks that pay homage to this under-appreciated artist. View all Soul Brother Records Titles

ROY AYERS VIRGIN UBIQUITY   Review

Its says something about the Roy's recording career that these tracks and versions remained on the shelf for 25 years until BBE released them this year. From grooves like 'Boogie Down', 'Sugar' and 'What's The T' to floaters like 'Brand New Feeling' and merry Clayton's wonderful performance on 'Oh What A Lonely Feeling. Check also the version of 'Mystic Voyage' and the instrumental 'Green And Gold'. Brilliant. View all Roy Ayers Titles

MARCUS BELGRAVE - GEMINI  Review

Typically enigmatic Spiritual Jazz that features many of the Tribe label's finest musicians. The anthem 'Space Odyssey' is a gem, but this album bristles with tough, funky & jazzy grooves. Check the breakneck 'Glue Fingers' with walking b-line & the eastern flavoured 'Gemini II'.

One for Blue Note Connoisseurs, the characteristically flowing arrangements and fine tune selection set Duke Pearson from many of his label contemporaries. HORACE SILVER - UNITED STATES OF MIND  Review

Horace's early 70's vocals albums 'That Healin Feelin'/'Total Response'/'All' on one double CD. Andy Bey's vocals combined with Silver's compositions and arrangements make this essential. 'Acid Pot And Pills', 'I've Had A Little Talk' and 'Won't You Open Up Your Senses' are classics.
