MAXWELL – BLACKSUMMERSNIGHT CD £13.95 CD
The long wait is over, 8 years since his last album Maxwell is back with probably his best album since that incredible debut. Like 'Urban Hang Suite' , this album needs to be listened to in its entirety to fully appreciate it, and it sounds retro but also very contemporary. The band are very tight and the musical content is high, with Maxwell 's soulful voice riding on the top. 'Bad Habit's and 'Cold' are horn backed semi-funky groovers. 'Help Somebody' and 'Stop The World' are groove ridden tracks that build to a crescendo, and the more upbeat 'Love You' will keep the feet movin. The slow mid tempo 'Pretty Things' allows Maxwell's soulful voice to really shine through, and the funky horn riffed instrumental 'Pheonix Rise' rounds things off nicely. Great album.

VICK ALLEN – TRUTH BE TOLD CD £16.95
Superior southern soul album from Birmingham Alabama. Vick has one of those classic southern voices in the Tyrone Davis/Willie Clayton style and has made consistently good albums for the past 10 years. The upbeat 'You Stay On My Mind', 'I'm Hooked' and 'Brand New Woman' hit home, as do the mid tempo beaters 'As Long As I Got My Baby' and 'I Need Attention' . There's a couple of nice 2-steppers’I Know You Got A Man' and 'If They Can Beat My Rockin' ft Omar Cunningham but it's the ballads 'I'm Thankful For My Woman On The Side' and cover of Sam Cooke's 'Not Heaven To Me' that show the beat of Vick's vocal talents. Good Solid album.

GIANNA – SOMETHING TRUE CD £12.95
This smooth soul album is produced by Kendall Duffie of Kloud 9. 'My Everything' and 'In You' would fit comfortably as vocal tracks on a smooth jazz album. The mid tempo dancers 'Maybe I Can Be' and 'Something True' will keep your feet moving, but the standouts are the dancer 'Hooked On You' featuring Kloud 9 on vocals and the brassy uptempo 'One Step Closer' which is in a style reminiscent of Incognito.
Nice album.

Chicago underground soul and house singer/producer and multi instrumentalist returns with a mainly upbeat set of hypnotic tracks that will delight his many fans. Includes the killer retro funky disco dance floor filler 'Music' that has a relentless groove. Highlights are also the soulful house dancer 'Special', the semi funky 4 to the floor beater 'Simmer', 'All The Time' an up tempo shuffler and the typically Peven 'Bangin'. For variety check the breezy mid tempo floater 'First Choice'.

Feel good mainly uptempo soul album with an 80's retro feel from UK vocalist. The groove driven dancer 's 'High From Your Lovin', 'Back In love' , 'I Really Want You Now', 'You've Changed' and 'Feelin Like A Fool' will keep your feet movin, whilst the mid tempo title track and 'Realise' are also good.

FOUR 80 EAST – ROLL ON CD £16.95
Canadian Jazz Funk band release as et with an early 80's feel to many of the tracks. Check 'Roll On' and 'One Night Only'. Though not as full-on, these tracks have a not dissimilar feel to the recent Down To The Bone set.. The Hammond led Funk of 'Loosey Goosey' has a wicked sax solo and more like Four 80 East's earlier work. 'Race The Moon' has a more spaced out feel. The catchy 'Never The Same Way Twice' has a compulsive groove – wicked bass and melodic lead guitar.
