If you want to understand why Charles Earland acquired the nickname of 'The Mighty Burner' then look no further than 'Leaving This Planet'. From the outrageously funky title song to the heavy take on Freddie Hubbard's 'Red Clay', the album delivers track after track of quality Hammond action. 'Warp Factor 8' adds a jazzier tone, but try also 'Asteroid' and the atmospheric 'Mason's Galaxy'. Joe Henderson's 'No Me Esqueca' mellows things out a little, but the blistering pace is renewed on the Coltrane inspired 'Tyner'. Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson and amazing drumming of Harvey Mason support Earland brilliantly on the set that successfully marries his Prestige organ sound of the early 70's and Earland's later foray into Jazz Funk. Originally a double vinyl, this is possibly the last great Hammond and is one of our favourite Jazz albums of all-time.

One of Grant Green’s most in-demand early 70’s albums (1972), features ‘I Don’t Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing/ Cold Sweat’ and ‘In The Middle’.  These 2 James Brown covers became very popular in the Rare Groove/ Jazz Dance era. Strong early 70’s Green renditions of his of self-penned ‘California Green’, Stevie’s ‘If You Really Love Me’ and the standard ‘Cast Your Fate To The Wind’ contribute to a fine album. Wade Marcus provides fine string and horn arrangements.

RAMSEY LEWIS – LOVE NOTES CD £14.95
This 1977 album features Stevie Wonder on the two tracks that Stevie wrote – the mellow title track and the Jazz Funk classic ‘Spring High’.  They are several funky Jazz cuts like the gritty ‘Shining’ and ‘Stash Dash’ that sound like that they were recorded at the same time as Ramsey’s 1975 set ‘Don’t It Feel Good’.  Check also the sleek Fusion of ‘Chili Today Hot Tamale.  ‘Love Notes’ is one of Ramsey’s strongest sets from the late 70’s.
