 PATRICE RUSHEN – SHOUT IT OUT CD £12.95
Brilliant 1977 jazz-funk album that really put Patrice on the map. Her keyboard playing is fantastic throughout, reminiscent of Herbie at his best in the 70’s, and she is joined by an all star cast including Al McKay, James Gadson, Bill Summers, Tom Scott and others. ‘Roll With The Punches’ is an uptempo driving instrumental that really kicks, ‘The Hump’ is a half vocal groovy jazz funker, whilst ‘Shout It Out and ‘Let There Be Funk’ are gritty and funky. ‘Stepping Stones’ ,’Yolon’ and ‘Sojourn’ are beautiful atmospheric mid tempo’s and the vocal track ‘Let Your Heart Be Free’,crossed over to soul fans and helped map her career path. Probably her best album and certainly one of the all time great jazz funk albums.

Gil and Brian's last album together, is both lyrically and musically on point. Like the two albums that preceeded it 'Bridges' and 'Secrets' it has been re-mastered from the original masters and sounds incredibly fresh. The uptempo 'Shut Em Down' grooves along nicely , the mid tempo 'Alien', 'Willing' , '1980' and slightly faster 'Push Comes To Shove' have great melodies , and 'Shah Mot' features some really good keyboard lines.  LUTHER INGRAM – LETS STEAL AWAY TO THE HIDEAWAY/DO YOU LOVE SOMEBODY CD £13.95
Luther's last two albums recorded in Muscle Shoals for Koko in 1976 and 77. 'Lets Steal Away', 'That's They way Love Is', I'm Gonna Be The Best Thing' and 'What Goes Around Comes Around' are more great southern soul ballads. The mid tempo 'Trying To Find My Love' and the grittier (ala Johnnie Taylor) 'It's Too Much' and I've Got Your Love In My:Life' lift the pace a bit. 'Do You Love Somebody' is an orchestrated modern soul mid tempo dancer, and 'Do You Think There's A Chance' is a good 70's dancer.

Vito Tommassi adds a Waltz 'I Giovani D'Oggi'. This jazzy set will appeal to lovers of Europen Jazz with a Bop/ modal twist.

 TERUO NAKAMURA – RISING SUN JAPANESE CD £29.95 (Limited Edition)
Classic 70's Fusion, Japanese bassist Teruo Nakamura hits the bullseye with this set that has hints of the Headhunters (check 'Red Shoes' – typical Hancock c.76). Nakamura's bass style has the growling earthiness that Paul Jackson and Busty Williams specialized in. His top notch band includes Lonnie Smith, Steve Grossman, Harry Whitaker and Art Gore. Every track is winner, but check out the heavy Funk groove of 'Rising Sun', 'The Cat' and the atmospheric 'Precious One'. Brilliant.

 MULATU ASTAKE - NEW YORK-ADDIS-LONDON THE STORY ETHIO JAZZ 1965-1975 £13.95 DBLE LP £17.95
Mystical and mysterious describes the music of Ethiopian Jazz vibesman Mulatu Astake. This CD documents his mid 60's to mid 70's work. Tracks like 'I Faram Gami I Faram' and 'Mulatu' have a unique ambience. 'Dewel' and 'Yekatii' are hypnotic with the mix of Eastern sounding horns, subtle layered percussion. Check also the punchier 'Ebo Lala' or the Latin groove of The Girl from Addis Ababa'. The recordings are enhanced by the unsophisticated production which only adds to the ambience, giving the whole CD an out of this world feel. The horns are particularly evocative and whilst the Jazz form points to America, this music has its own unique appeal. Wonderful.
