GEORGE JACKSON – IN MEMPHIS 1972-77 CD £13.95
21 tracks from the cult southern soul singer/writer and arranger, recorded in Memphis in the mid 70's. ' Aretha Sing One For Me' and 'Let Them Know You Care' have that typical 'Hi' sound. 'All In My Mind' is a great mid tempo groover, 'How Can I Get Next To You' from 1974 is a great sax backed mid tempo highlighting George's vocals. 'Dear Abby' , 'I Don't Need You No More' and 'Macking On You' are really good ballads. Good selection from an under rated talent.
also available 'What Would Your Mama Say' and 'George Jackson in Muscle Shoals CD's £14.95 each

JOE SIMON – SOUL FOR THE DANCEFLOOR CD £13.95
Like many in the UK I had regarded Joe as s country soul singer, but this excellent collection proves he made some great unheralded modern soul sides through the 70's to the early 80's. 'In My Baby's Arms' and 'Who was that lady' are excellent modern dancers. The bouncy 'Let Me Be The One' , 'It Must Be Love' and 'I.O.U' are good dancers. The Brassy 'Easy To Love', Moody 'I Can't Stand A Liar' and the finger snapping 'I Love you More Than anything 'are also great. 'I Don't Wanna Make Love' is a brilliant string laden mid tempo stepper from 1980 and ''Georgia Blue' a beautiful orchestrated ballad. Great comp.

HANK MOBLEY JAPANESE LIMITED EDITION CDs £14.95 EACH
3 classic mid 50’s Hank Mobley albums that epitomize the ‘Blue Note sound’ of the era. The Quartet album features Art Blakey and Horace Silver, the highlights are the fast, driving ‘Hank’s Prank’ and the finger popping ‘Avila And Tequila’ with its gorgeous melody, plus the kicking blues of ‘Walkin The Fence’ and a fast take on ‘Love For Sale’.
The album with Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan is a prime example of the infamous ‘Blue Note jam session’ with the front line horns plus Horace Silver on fire. All 4 tracks are winners, but check the pulsating ‘Double Whammy’, the racy ‘Mobleymania’ and the swinging ‘Barrel Of Funk’.
The All Stars set is a more lyrical affair, less driven by groove although ‘Reunion’ has a fair pace to it. Tracks like ‘Mobley’s Musings’ and ‘Lower Stratosphere’
