PATRICE RUSHEN – SHOUT IT OUT CD £12.95
Brilliant 1977 jazz-funk album that really put Patrice on the map. Her keyboard playing is fantastic throughout, reminiscent of Herbie at his best in the 70’s, and she is joined by an all star cast including Al McKay, James Gadson, Bill Summers, Tom Scott and others. ‘Roll With The Punches’ is an uptempo driving instrumental that really kicks, ‘The Hump’ is a half vocal groovy jazz funker, whilst ‘Shout It Out and ‘Let There Be Funk’ are gritty and funky. ‘Stepping Stones’ ,’Yolon’ and ‘Sojourn’ are beautiful atmospheric mid tempo’s and the vocal track ‘Let Your Heart Be Free’,crossed over to soul fans and helped map  her career path. Probably her best album and certainly one of the all time great jazz funk albums.

ROY AYERS UBQUITY – HE'S COMING CD £12.95
Hugely in-demand second Polydor studio album from Roy gets a US CD release for the first time. The Rare Groove era hails 'We Live In Brooklyn Baby' as one of the greatest tunes of its time. Check the ultra funky instrumental 'Fire Weaver'. Other killers include 'He's A Superstar', 'He's Coming' and the original take on 'Sweet Tears' on this revered set from 1972. Try also the haunting 'I Don't Know How To Love Him. Group includes the legendary Harry Whitaker and Billy Cobham on drums as well as Ron Carter on 'We Live In Brooklyn..'.

Willie Bobo – Hell Of An Act To Follow/ Bobo CD £12.95
Percussionist Willie's two great jazz funk albums from 1978 and '79 together on one CD. 'Hell of an Act ' was produced by Wayne Henderson and features a great line up incl Bobby Lyle, Ernie Watts etc. it includes his big jazz funk club hit and possibly definitive version of Ronnie Laws 'Always There' both in album and 12” remix versions. Also there's 'Keep That Same Old Feeling' the uptempo 'Sixty-Two Fifty' and a good vocal version of 'Dindi'. 'Bobo' is a more vocal album featuring Errol Knowles on the great 2-stepper 'Comin Over Me' and uptempo dancer 'Reason For Livin' with Willie more to the fore on 'Palos'.

CRUSADERS – IMAGES CD £9.95
Possibly Images is the last truly great Crusaders album comprising seven instrumental pieces. It was bassman's Pops Popswell's last album with the group; he wrote the classic 'Cosmic Reign' for the album – a tight Jazz Funk groove with jazzy overtones. 'Snowflake' is a lighter cut, whilst 'Fairy Tales' and the popular sample 'Bayou Bottoms' and 'Marcella's Dream' are all strong tracks. In fact every track is quality. The band's ensemble playing is tight and the solos (especially Joe Sample) are fine. Brilliant.

TERRY CALLIER – THE TERRY CALLIER STORY 1965 – 1982 CD £13.95
16 tracks from the lyrical genius, Terry has recorded such great music over the years, no compilation can do full justice. His first version of 'Ordinary Joe', the in-demand 'You're Gonna Miss Your Candyman' (short/original version), 'Dancing Girl' are all literally classic. The CD also includes the Northern Soul favourite 'Look At Me Now' originally released on 7” only. Terry's lyrical prowess needs no words of ours to evoke its power. The upbeat 'I Don't Want To See Myself Without You' – a rare 12” from 1982 is here in its full glory as is the lovely B side 'If I Could Make You Change Your Mind'. Enjoy the musical journey of this underground legend.

LONNIE LISTON SMITH EXOTIC MYSTERIES/ A SONG FOR THE CHILDREN CD £11.95
Two of Lonnie's late 70's Columbia/ CBS albums on a single CD, Exotic Mysteries has two killer cuts the Disco Jazz of 'Space Princess' with its famous percussion break and the 2 Step 'Quiet Moments'. A Song For The Children's title song is similar in musical style to 'Space Princess', whereas 'Aquarian Cycle' has a more hypnotic and funky feel. These two albums were an early outing for bassman Marcus Miller.

GROVER WASHINGTON JR FEELS SO GOOD CD £9.95
One of Grover's funkiest LPs from 1976 and the follow-up to the brilliant Mister Magic. This is simply great Jazz Funk with Knucklehead', 'Sea Lion' and 'Hydra' having that accessible Kudu/ CTI sound that he personified. Arranged superbly by Bob James, the album has five sublime cuts including the song her wrote for his wife 'Moonstreams', which is breathtakingly beautiful.

GROVER WASHINGTON JR – REED SEED CD £9.95
Reed Seed was the first studio album that Grover recorded with Locksmith backing him and followed his move from Kudu to Motown. There is tightness to the ensemble playing that reflects a band that plays together continually. Check the Jazz Funk grooves like 'Do Dat', the cool Latin tinged 'Maracas Beach' with its riff laden backing or Grover's version of 'Loran Dance' he penned for Idris Muhammad 4 years previously. Also try the superb Jazz Funk of 'Step N Thru'. Grover's version of Billy Joel's 'Just The Way You Are' is the definitive Jazz take on the classic.

ROY AYERS – VIRGO RED CD £9.95
From 1973, at this time Roy could do no wrong. From '72 to '80 just about every album was either 'on it' or had a classic or several on it. Grooves like the compulsive 'Brother Louie' and the instrumental belter 'Des Nudes Soul' are funky and Fusion of the highest quality. The uptempo take on 'Love From The Sun' features Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. 'Virgo Red' and the 2 Step paced 'Giving Love' (Leroy Hutson penned/Voices of East Harlem track) add variety to an ultra strong Roy Ayers album.

Master drummer's debut album out on CD! This excellent Jazz Funk album is probably his finest solo work. It features the core of the Headhunters on 2 brilliant grooves that typifies the Hancock sound (driven by Paul Jackson's bass playing – his version of 'Hop Scotch (beloved of Hip Hop samplers) and 'Wild Rice'. Seawind's debut for CTI is an absolute corker. Renowned for the jazzy Rare Groove of 'He Loves You', this is an album similarly inclined tracks. 'The Devil Is A Liar' has a jazzy groove, but the 9 minute 'Roadways' is a fine Jazz workout . The album is full of flowing Jazz tracks like 'We Got A Way' and ''You Gotta Be Willing To Lose'. Produced by Harvey Mason, and featuring the soon to be famous Seawind horns featuring Jerry Hey. This CD has 2 bonus tracks the gritty Funk of 'Can't Wait' and the mid-tempo head nodder 'Please Say Yes'.

From1974, this album is most famous for the 2 Step Rare Groove gem 'Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong'. His version of Sly's 'Don't Call Me Nigger Whitey' is a funky synth groove. 'Green River' and 'Beginnings' are jazzy tunes, that allow Harris' delicate piano to shine. Love the under-stated Funk groove of 'Higga-Boom' – great b line. Gene Harris' piano style is not dissimilar to Ramsey Lewis' at times. Overall this is a mellow groove propelled by Harvey Mason's tight drumming'.

SAHIB SHIHAB – SUMMER DAWN CD £15.95 / LP £15.95
This wonderful modal jazz set sees saxman/flautist Shihab in top form. The five tracks are always wonderful the waltzes 'Campi's Idea' and 'Waltz For Seth' are particularly strong. 'Herr Fixit' is another groove on which Sahib's flute is especially expressive. 'Lillemor' recently covered by Lorenzo Tucci is a slower more deliberate groove. From 1963, this album is one of the first collaborations between Kenny Clarke (drums) and Fancy Boland's classically trained Jazz piano. Wonderful stuff.

GROVER WASHINGTON JR – A SECRET PLACE CD £12.95
From 1977, this album was a bit of change of direction for Grover. Out went the orchestrated arrangements of Bob James, and in came a sparser sound courtesy of Dave Matthews' arrangements. 'A Secret Place' is a wonderful mid-tempo Jazz Funk cut with our man and Dave Grusin delivering superb solos. 'Not Yet' has as understated intro that builds into a funky slice of Fusion. Again Grusin, Grover (on tenor) and Eric Gale share the solos, and is underpinned by Anthony Jackson's wicked bass and Harvey Mason's tight drumming. 'Love Makes It Better' is mellower, whilst Herbie Hancock's 'Dolphin Dance' adds an atmospheric Jazz feel.

NATHAN DAVIS – BEST OF 65-76 CD £13.95 DBL LP £16.95
Nathan Davis is one of the undiscovered or under-appreciated geniuses of Jazz saxophone (and flute). This superb collection covers his Bop/modal, freer Jazz and Fusion work. The openers 'B's Blues' and 'Sconsolato' have a Coltrane (c. 1960) feel and Nathan's playing certainly sounds influenced by 'Trane. 'a5'has a modal feel, whilst the cover of 'Theme From Zoltan' is exquisite. Hubbard's 'Up Jumped Spring' is given a free improvisational swing propelled by Art Taylor's drums. 'Tragic Magic' is revered in Jazz dance circles. Much of this album was recorded in Europe and has a slightly more flexible approach than US recordings. High quality and compliments the recent release of his classic album 'If' .

'If' is one of the rarest and heaviest Fusion sets from the 70's with original vinyl copies going for over £150. The mid-tempo groover 'Tragic Magic' is a sought after cut, but try the ultra fast 'African Boogie' or the more deliberate but still funky 'Stick Buddy'. The equally infectious 'New Orleans', the breezy 'Bahia' and the straighter 'Mr Five By Five' are strong instrumentals that contribute to this set being one of the most under-appreciated Jazz Funk albums!!
