Fantastic mainly uptempo album combining 70's and early 80's influences with a contemporary sound, featuring the vocals of Leroy Burgess, Taka Boom, Pete Simpson and others. Highlights are the disco/funk of 'Our Lives Are Shaped', 'Sitting On Top Of The World', 'Days Gone By' and 'Put A Lyric In it' (which could have been recorded on prelude circa 79-80). 80's boogie style is represented by 'Survivin' and 'Fashion', the 4 Hero-esq 'Journey To The Sun' and 'Turn It Out' also score well. There's some good instrumentals 'Dusk' , 'Monterey' and 'Free Bass', and the 2 step title track. Best of all though is the Norman Whitfield influenced shifter 'Man Of War'. Probably the best retro-sounding album of recent times and one of the albums of the year.

Maysa makes her first album of new material for several years and it's one of her very best albums.
Her so soulful voice captivatingly glides over an extremely well produced jazzy soul album, that oozes quality throughout. 'My Destiny' is a delightful flute backed mid tempo groover, 'Simpatico' a mid tempo floater with a groove whilst the hypnotic 'Take Me Away' and 'Never Really Ever' are slightly slower.
'Happy Feelings' is a great uptempo jazzy soul groover that really swings, and the semi instrumental 'Let's Figure It Out' (tribute to Bluey) that starts slow then kicks into a real stormer are similar to the kind she records with Incognito. 'I Need A Man' is a lyrically strong mid tempo and there's a couple of melancholy ballads. This album just gets better with each play definitely one of the albums of the year.

Mainly consisting of quality mid tempo tracks like the shuffler 'Anytime Of The Day' , 'Holding On To Your Love' , 'Cant Stop Thinking About You' , 'I'm Changing' and the sax backed 'The Love Is Gone', this album is for chilling out to. This is timeless soul music of the highest quality. Another essential album.

'Alibi' is a brilliant shuffling upper mid tempo song with nice percussion ft Darien (remember him from this is soul 2006 ?), he also sings 'Upside' another dancer.. 'Amazing' is an uptempo dancer ft Tony Momrelle and Imaani, Tony also leads on 'Love Where You Are And It Will Be'. Atlanta’s singer/songwriter Heston who made that great track ‘If’ featured on ‘this is soul 2005’ makes his debut album and what a fantastic one it is. Real songs well sung with great real instrumentation, the quality just oozes throughout. ‘My Baby’ is a singalong brassy uptempo dancer that really kicks, ‘Distant Lover’ is Marvin-esq mid tempo with a great hook  (but a different track) and ‘Easy’ also has a Marvin feel to it. ‘Radio’ and ‘Hello Sunday’ are catchy mid tempo’s , ‘Sunny Days’ is an uptempo groover and ‘Something In The Water’ a hypnotic mid tempo groover.  ‘Dreamy Eyes’ ft Angela Johnson is a beautiful ballad and ‘No Way No How’ and ‘Your Perfume’ are gentle ballads that really work. Very strong album that will appeal to you if you like the Atlanta sound (Anthony David/PJ Morton) , one of the best so far this year.

Deep voiced Alex is the male singer from the group Jiva and sounds similar both vocally and with his material to Will Downing. He also plays trumpet, flugelhorn and keyboards on this beautiful warm and lush album. 'Kissing You' is a mid tempo jazzy soul version of Keith Washington's track, 'Rsing To The Top' a nice sax led cover of Keni Burke's classic taken at a slightly slower pace. 'Sunlight Inn My Rain' and 'Windows' are shuffling mid tempo's, and 'A Million Ways' and 'in Your Eyes' are mid tempo jazzy soul. Alex excels on the ballads 'Bernadette', and 'Promise' and there's a good semi instrumental 'Lullabye'.

Raphael changes gear and makes an incredible 60's Motown esq album that reflects the excitement and rawness of that era but with a contemporary feel. 'Sure Hope You Mean It', '100 Yard Dash', 'Keep Marchin', 'Big Easy', 'Love That Girl', 'Staying In love' and 'Lets Take A Walk' all have that 60's uptempo sound, but are all quite different. 'Just One Kiss' (ft Joss Stone), and 'Sometimes' are beat ballads in a 'My Girl' style,' Calling' is a slower ballad. and the heavily orchestrated 'Never Give You Up' has a more 70's mid tempo sound and feat Stevie Wonder on harmonica and is real stand out. This album is a bold project that really works, and could be a future classic.

'Desire' is a great smooth sax backed mid tempo track , 'Shine On Me' a shuffling summery upper mid tempo and 'Why Why Why' a catchy semi funky mid tempo with great female vocals. 'Another Place Another Time', 'Shelter OF Your Heart' , 'Strings Of Love' and 'Melody Of Love' are more downtempo on which his voice really shines through. The killer track though is 'Ready For Love' a slinky warm and mellow mid tempo and one of the best he has ever recorded. Great album

Really strong joyful album from Ghanian Sophia recorded in Paris with a full band. Sophia has a great soulful voice and the songs are melodic and well crafted and musically very together, bridging soul with a light jazzy-latin feel. 'Woman In love' is a great mid tempo dancer that really swings, 'Over' a breezy mid tempo with nice sax backing, 'Someone Special' a mid tempo dancer with good hooks and 'Living Up To My Dreams' a soulful dancer. 'Mystic Melody (East River Drive) is an adaptation of Grover's classic made into a full on melodic latin-soul dancer of the highest standard and the albums killer track. 'Le B3 De Gibraltar' is a slightly latin dancer, 'Parisian Night Style' a lively upper mid tempo with nice keyboards, 'Caribbean Funk' is an aptly title latin-ish dancer and 'Calle Blanca Blues' a haunting emotion packed sad song. This well produced album combines old school values with a timeless contemporary sound and is a real find, a really good album highly recommended.

Really good New soul album with a slight jazz tinge by a lady with a great voice. 'Be You' is a brilliant slinky mid tempo groover with horns, 'Letting You Go' is a similar pace and also very good. 'Kings And Queens' and 'Mystery' are great upper mid tempo dancers, and the more uptempo 'Will U Be There' and 'Two And One' will also work on the dancefloor. The slower 'Beautiful Soul' is jazzier with a nice sax solo, as is the melodic mid tempo 'Funny', whilst 'Free Yourself' is more funky ala Rufus. This one will set the standard for anyone to beat in 2008.

The mid tempo 'Just Another Day' and 'Heartbeats' and the shuffling ballad 'Masterpiece' are also highlights on this consistantly strong album.

Lalah's best album to date by far, this really fabulous album that adds more crediblity to the regenerated Stax label. Her voice has matured and she has adopted some of her fathers style and phrasing. 'Let Go' is a really good mid tempo plodder ft Rahsaan Patterson on BV's and the albums most immediate track. The fresh sounding 'Breathe' is a mellow head nodder, whilst 'on Your Own', 'For Always', 'That Was Then', 'What Goes Around' and the beautiful 'Little Girl' (on which he makes a cameo apperance) are Donnie H influenced piano accompanied slow tracks with incredible space.This is a quality listening album , get into it.

This mainly up tempo album is refreshingly different from most released in the past year with  Pete's soulful voice rides above some interesting rhythms. 'Don't Hide' , 'Aint No Fool' , 'look A little Further', 'Play This Song', 'It Wont Mean A thing' and 'I'm Left Dreaming' are uptempo numbers with a slight 80's feel to them., due to the heavy bass lines. The highlight though is the more percussive and free flowing uplifting 'Wont Give Up' that is both great to listen to and a floor filler. Really nice album.

Well produced, vibrant quality new soul album with plenty of live instruments and horns., that has a definite 70's feel. The songs are well written and Mo's vocals are great throughout. 'Are You Ready' is a killer uptempo funky soul workout with punchy horns and walking bass lines. 'Can You Tell Me Why' is an excellent slightly jazzy track that builds with a catchy chorus, 'Hoping For Rain' a melodic floater , 'Passion Flower' 'Here In My Dreams' are mellow ballads and 'We Will Find A Way' is catchy and melodic mid tempo. Also great are the shuffling 'Beauty Of Your Soul' and 'You are My life' , the Rufus Infl 'So Funky' and 'The Light That Lives In Me' which has a slight latin feel and a nice jazzy guitar solo.
Another Excellent album to start 2008 with.

Stephanie is best known for her contributions to artists like Amp Fiddler and Roy Hargrove etc. Her second album is varied, lyrically strong - telling it like it is today, and really good. The most immediate tracks are the catchy bass led feel good dancer 'Oh Yeah' and 'Jackson Avenue' a dancer with a hypnotic 70's Motown feel to it. 'Where Did Our Love Go' is a really nice ballad duet with Anthony Hamilton. 'Kinky' is a real groover in a Hargrove style, 'Say What You feel' has a JB's style backing and 'Money', 'Tell it Like It Is' and 'Sure Feels Good' are struttin funky soul cuts. This Vibrant album has backs of energy and the feel good factor- uplifting and highly recommended.

The standouts are the organic head nodder's 'Gravity' , 'Black Rose' and 'If I Was You', also check the mid tempo groover's 'We Were In love' and 'hanging On' the groove ridden 'Don't Forget The Ghetto' and the slower 'Broken Again' and 'Smile'. Superior southern soul album that is aptly titled as it features good songs with real instrumentation throughtout. Jeff has a great 'gruff' deep soul voice and the music here complements it perfectly. ‘Lock My Door' is an upper mid tempo chugger, 'Shake Something Loose' and 'Last Call' are good uptempo dancers, 'Do You Wanna' and 'How Do You Want It' are nice 2 steppers. On the ballads Jeff excels 'That Body' is a classic southern soul slowie, 'Woman's Worth' is a good duet with label boss William Bell and 'Wrapped' Up In You', 'Planning My Weekend' and 'Where Do You Go' are also nice.
Really good album probably the best of it's style so far this year..

Dwele has his own distinctive sound and style , his hypnotic soulful rythming vocals glide over groove driven backing tracks with some heavy beats. The album starts off with the upper mid tempo tracks 'Free As A Bird' and more pounding 'Feels So Good', but it's on the head nodding mid tempo 'I'm Cheatin', 'You Wont Be Lonely' , 'Travellin Girl', '70's and 'Spiritual' that Dwele makes his mark. Kloud  9 (Kendall and Kelvis Duffie) , have built up a good following with their first two albums, and this third album will please their existing fans who like their sound, it being at the most soulful end of R&B.
‘Step’ is a good ‘stepper’ dancer, ‘Enjoy The Ride’ and ‘ ‘Everything That I Need’ are catchy upper mid tempo dancers. The killer tracks though are the stepper ‘Can’t Hold This Love’ ft Tamara Jones, and the sax backed mid tempo ‘All That Matters’ which has a good groove.  ‘Grateful’ and ‘I’m Calling You’ are nice mid tempo’s and ‘Appreciation’ and ‘To Have Your Love’ are good hypnotic beat ballads, and there’s even a soulful remix of ‘Love’s Better With You’. Nice solid album.

Really nice jazzy funky soul album with good lyrics and unique female vocals from Sunta Africa, real instruments and a very 'live' sound, in a style which could be compared in places to both Rebirth or Fertile Ground. 'Break Away' is a good funky soul uptempo groover, and the groove ridden 'universal' and funkier 'Raised Right' which has a nice organ backing are good uptempo tracks. The flute backed 'Stay The Night' , 'Not Used To' and 'Unity' are nice mid tempo floaters, whilst 'Working For The Weekend' has a fuller sound that builds to a crescendo. 'Soul Tango' shows some Cuban influence, and even the inoffensive raps on a couple of tracks don't detract too much from this uplifting album.

Husband and wife duo Fatin and Aja make their third album and it is quality mainly mid and down tempo Soul /R&B love songs. with great harmonies. 'Can't Help It' is a really great beat ballad that gets better each time you hear it. 'Alright' and 'Pressure' are
mid tempo 's with good grooves, 'Just The Way You Are' melodic mid tempo, 'Rightfully So' and 'No Limit' are good beat ballads, 'Love We Share' is a mid tempo with a fuller sound, 'House Of Love' and R&B ballad and the spoken word 'Always Be Arriving' ft Malik Yusef gives an interesting take on 'Rocking You Eternally. This album takes a couple of plays to fully appreciate but is worth the effort.

Quality mainly down tempo soul album from a very accomplished female vocalist, which will appeal to lovers of more traditional soul. 'Music' is a really nice part spoken word mid tempo groover and along with the catchy mid tempo finger popper 'For A Moment In Time' are the albums most 'up' tracks.
The rest of the album are quality ballads like 'Romantically', 'Precious Friend', 'Missin You', 'Take Time Out For Love', 'Can't Settle For Less' , 'I'm In Love' and 'That's How Much' . Really good listening album.

GEORGE DUKE DUKEY TREATS CD £15.95
George Duke releases an album that is closest to his late 70's Epic albums (Reach For It'/ 'Dukey Stick' etc). Tracks like 'Everyday Hero' and the slowish 'Dukey Treats' have that P Funk tinged sound. 'Mercy' is a classic Jazz Funk style groove with a wicked instrumental break and keyboard solo following the vocal duet. 'Images Of Us' is slightly more leftfield but is another Jazz Funk groover. The gentler 'I Tired To Tell You' and 'Listen Baby' contrast with the frenetic Funk, as does the EWF sounding 'Are You Ready'. Also on the mid-tempo side check 'Somebody Laid It On Us' or the message based 'Sudan'. This is probably the best George Duke album for some time.

BRIAN CULBERTSON BRINGING BACK THE FUNK CD £14.95
Brian goes back to Funk inspiration for this album that mixes the Smooth with Funk. 'Always Remember' is a smooth-ish groove with Brian's clean piano work a delight. Equally delightful is the highly melodic 'Let's Stay In Tonight'. On the Funk side 'Funkin Like My Fathers' and 'The Groove' have a P Funk flavour with co-producer Bootsy involved. Kool & The Gang's 'Hollywood Swinging' and Tower Of Power's 'You Got To Funkifize' are given strong re-workings; the strongest cover is Donny Hathaway's 'Everything Is Everything', which retains much of the grittiness of the original. An impressive cast includes Fred Wesley, Maceo, Maurice White, among many others.

This nice Smooth Jazz album from this talented flute player is consistently strong. Mix of covers like 'She's Gone' and an accomplished rendition of the Crusaders' 'Keep That Same Old Feeling'. Check the funky yet smooth 'It's On' and the Latin flavoured 'Cafe Con Leche'. Leighton's playing is fluent and reminiscent of Herbie Mann at times. He supported by guest appearances from Tom Scott and trumpeters Greg Adams and Mic Gillette, both ex Tower Of Power. Jason Miles arranges.

Excellent Smooth Jazz album from this exceptional flautist, Althea's music has a more funky edge than most smooth albums. Take the title song and 'Ladies Night Out' two strong instrumental grooves, which suit Althea's full flute playing style. 'Come My Way' is a mid-tempo vocal Soul/Jazz tune as is the mellow 'Never Givin Up'. She gives a lovely spin to the Rose Royce ballad 'Wishing On A Star' and to the standard 'Summertime'. Her expressive flute playing dominates the most of the tracks.

On 'Mas Que Nada' she breathes new life with this sexy take on which she sings (not unlike Gabriela Anders). Try also the shuffling 'Running Away'. Nick Colionne's guitar playing has been compared to George Benson and from style and tone standpoint you can hear why. Try the waspish acoustic floater 'Alem Do Sol' and the foot tapping groove of 'Connexao', which should raise the spirits. Quality and refreshingly upbeat, the second album from the daughter of Azymuth's bass player is essential.

The two tracks featuring Carmen Lundy – a re-working of her ‘Time Is Love’ classic and the more spiritual Jazz tinged ‘Object In The Mirror’ are outstanding. ‘Man from Nagpur’ is a Sleepwalker style stomper, whilst the percussive driving ‘For Self Defense’ build remorselessly towards a crescendo that is but the fore taster to the faster ‘Percussion Revolver’. The acoustic bass line on the title song glows and growls over which the ever excellent horn section and brilliant pianist express themselves in a Modal/ Hard Bop framework.

Excellent follow-up to the wonderful 'Up And Out' that is quite different but equally strong. The album is more diverse with the addition of vocal tracks and modal/ Latin flavours rather than just 60's Hard Bop. The musicianship is of the highest calibre. The opener 'The Sun In Motion' kicks matters off in more typical Invaders style with full horns and a galloping rhythm. 'Day By Day' and 'Perugia' have a Nicola Conte/ Schema vibe, the former with Frank Montis' vocal in the Mario Biondi vein. The percussive Latin/ Afro Beat tinged 'Art Mbekie' features a fine guitar solo from Eddie Roberts. The Brazilian vocal cut 'Cancao Pequena' is a joyful groove. Every track is strong. ESSENTIAL.

Shuya Okino's album from last year is played with real instruments by Sleepwalker who raise the bar several notches and take it to another level. These guys have to be one of the best jazz groups at the moment. CD1 feat Navasha Day of Fertile ground on 'Thank You'  a great modal jazz dancer that really swings with great Sax and Keyboards. 'Shine' Ft Diviniti has an Incognito feel to it, whilst 'If It Is Love' ft Clara Hill is a little slower and has some nice Flute playing. Josh Milan Of Blaze adds his soulful vocals to 'Love Is The Key', Yukimi Nagano 's distinctive tones help 'Pieces of You' another modal number and Carleen Anderson shines on 'Beautiful Sadness'.  CD2 has instrumental versions of the six tracks highlighting Sleepwalker's great playing on this brilliant album.

Azymuth's eighth album for Far Out kicks off with an excellent take on Hancock's 'Butterfly'. The joyful Azymuth sound flows on the superb 'Os Cara La'. The Jazz Funk sound propelled by Alex Malherios unique bass glows on the funky 'Avenida Rio Branco' and on the wickedly groove laden 'Hole In One'. 'Triagem' has a breezy vibe with Jose Roberto's Bertrami's fluid fender Rhodes setting the mood. 'Morning' is a beautiful cut and is a typical Azymuth mid-tempo groove. Of all the Far Out recordings, 'Butterfly' most closely recreates the magic of the early 80s Azymuth albums.

'Born For The Screen' is another uptempo track, and 'All For You' a horn back dancer with a driving basline, whilst 'Ocean Of Love' has a more contemporary uptempo groove with a wicked guitar riff (think 'We Got The Funk'). The Jazzier instrumentals, the uptempo 'Magic Hill Of Lihnid' and the mid tempo 'Soul Splendor' have nice guitar work and provide a variation of this fresh sounding , retro feel album.

These two albums were cut in mainly in Muscle Shoals for Columbia in the mid 70's, and amongst the best that Bobby recorded..Two Prince Phillip Mitchell tracks,  'Home I Where The Heart Is' a great track , a dancer that has retained its popularity, and 'Something For My Head' another popular dancer are probably the highlights from 1976 'Home Is' album., although the ballad 'One more Chance On Love' and the cover of 'Change Is Gonna Come' are also great. The 1978 Don Davis produced 'Pieces' contains' the epic mid tempo 'Trust Your Heart' with David Ruffin on bv's, and the lovely 'Stop Before We Start' ft Candi Staton' and the great 'Caught Up In The Middle' . Bobbi Humphrey's third album produced by the Mizell brothers and arguably the strongest and most consistent of the three. Latin tinged Jazz Funk cuts like 'Uno Esta' and archetypal Mizell grooves like 'The Trip' and 'Mestizo Eyes' define this album. Their easy going production shines through on 'You Make Me Feel So Good' and 'Please Set Me At Ease'. Ontrack often overlooked is the aptly titled 'Sweeter Than Sugar'. With a rhythm section including Harvey Mason and Chuck Rainey combined with the production, this is Jazz Funk of the highest quality.

Light Of The World's classic 1981 album on CD for the first time. The album was recorded in LA with Side Effect's Augie
Johnson at the helm the sound is more like a West coast US band than UK, it is an acknowledged Jazz Funk Classic and quite probably the best album ever recorded by a UK Funk band. 'Time' is an urgent uptempo JF dancer with a great driving bassline and horns, the delightful 'London Town' an all time classic a mid tempo stepper that has a Mizell feel to it on which the trumpet sounds like Donald Byrd and great Vibes as well. 'I'm So Happy' and 'I Walk The Streets Alone' are dreamy downtempo tracks. 'The soulful uptempo 'More Of Myself' has great vocals from Miki Howard, whilst 'Visualize Yourself' and 'Pete's Crusade' are great instrumental jazz funk groover's, and 'Something For Nothing'is another good uptempo number. This album still sounds fresh and is augmented by tracks from the recent Beggar & Co live at the Jazz Café inc a great version of 'Bahia De Palma'. Fantastic.

This albvum was recorded in London for Contempo in 1974 , backed by Ultrafunk and The Armada Orchestra. Deep Soulful voiced Doris is perfectly suited to the cover of Marlena's 'Woman Of The Ghetto' the mid tempo modern soul 'Pick Up The Pieces' and the southern 'Hey Lady' and 'Full Time Woman'. Reissue of an extremely rare soul album recorded in Columbus Ohio in 1976/7, with extra tracks. .Considering it obscurity it is an incredibly sophisticated well produced and recorded album that has shades of Stevie all over it, which are especially evident on the melodic mid tempo title track, 'I'm All Changed' and 'We Could Get it Together'. The outstanding track is 'Try Me' presented in both the original modern soul dancer 45 and the more melodic album versions. 'I Luv You' is another dancer and the mid tempo 'Leavin You Alone' and ballads 'Alone', 'Find Me Love Me' and 'I Want To Show You' are good ballads.

Jazz Funk/ Smooth Jazz legend's first two funky sets recorded originally for Inner City are now out on CD. 'Jeff Lorber Fusion' includes the bright 'Deva Samba' and the slower, more deliberate 'Glisten'. Try also the Jazz Funk of 'Lift Off' and the interestingly tempo 'River Winds'. 'Poppin' is a fine slice of funky Jazz that appeared on only the original version of the LP.
On 'Soft Space', check 'The Samba' a self explanatory slice of Latin tinged Fusion. 'Black Ice', 'Swing Funk' and subtler riff laden 'Curtains' are all brilliant examples of Jazz Funk (from 1978). The oft sampled 'Proteus' is a driving groove laden piece, possibly Jeff's finest cut!

'Touch My Love', probably the strongest of the four features the legendary Latin Jazz Funk opus 'Barbara Ann' plus the haunting 'Hideaway', the 14 min symphonic 'seasons' and the beautiful title song. 4 bonus cuts include a wicked slice of Jazz Funk 'Japanese Umbrella' and the enticing 2 Step groove of 'Spirit Of Love'. The EWF sounding 'Give Me Some Emotion' is stand out from '8 For The 80's, but check the bass led mid-tempo groover 'The Love You Give To Me'. Dancers 'Go For It', 'I Want To Blow' and 'You Deserve To Dance' are perfect illustrations of the sound of 1980.
The following year 'Let Me Be The One' was released and includes another Latin tinged masterpiece 'El Bobo'. The upbeat 'Flying High', 'You Are My Life' and 'Dancer' will move your feet, whilst the early 80's Soul of 'Love won't Harm No One' will appeal to lovers of that era's music. But it is the two bonus cuts that feature an unnamed vocalist sounding uncaanily like Phyllis Hyman on the exquisite 'Boston' and the upbeat 'Reach Out'.
