SPANKY WILSON WESTBOUND YEARS CD £13.95
Spanky falls into the same category as Marlena, Nancy and Esther where soul and jazz vocals overlap. Her 1975 Westbound album 'Speciality of The House' was arranged by (whats Going On) arranger David Van De Pitte and produced by Detroit legend Al Kent. 'I'll Stake My Life on You Boy' is a big prod mid tempo groover , 'Easy Lover' and the title track are good modern soul, 'Downer I Get' and 'Missing Pieces' are beat ballads, 'Home' an excellent jazzier big band track, and best of all is the killer gentle 2 stepper 'Love Song' . Best of the non album tracks are the funky version of Bill withers' Kissing My Love' and the semi funky soul track 'Cant See The Forest For The Trees'. Good 70's Soul Jazz.

SIR JOE QUARTERMAN/FREE SOUL
Re-mastered and extended version of this great Classic Funk album from 1973. ‘I’ve Got So Much Trouble In My Mind’ is of course a well known classic, but of an equal standard from the original album are ‘Trouble With Trouble’, ‘The Way They Do My Life’, ‘Find Yourself’ and ‘I Made A Promise’. Added here are the non album singles ‘Thanks Dad’ , ‘This Girl Of mine’ , ‘Get Down Baby’ , ‘Im A Young Man’ and the brilliant and often sampled ‘Im Gonna Get You’, plus 3 tracks that were unreleased at the time the best of which is ‘How High’. A Great album which now sounds incredibly fresh and punchy.

Superior vocal harmony soul from 1973. Many highlights inc 'Woe Is Me' is the killer modern mid tempo beat ballad, and the mid tempo modern shuffler 'Shes For Real' along with the sweet soul ballads 'What A Shame', 'Let Me Be Your Friend' , 'Show The World' , 'We're Gonna Be Together' and 'Count Your Chips'. As bonus tracks Ronnie Shannon's in demand modern dancer 'Sweet Games Of Love', the Northern dancer 'I've Been Blessed' , the mid tempo 'Get Myself High' and the killer ballads 'Lets Start Over' and 'Baby I Love You'. RANCE ALLEN SAY MY FRIEND CD £12.95
Probably the best album and certainly the most soul oriented album from the powerful voiced Rance and his Brothers. The Mizell Brothers produced it in 1977 and add their semi funky layered sound and each song has a positive message . Highlights are the string laden stormer 'Truth Is Marching On' , the great mid tempo two stepper 'Reasons To Survive' with its swingling strings and great guitar licks and 'Peace Of Mind' an all time classic dancer with typical Mizell rhythms that builds and builds. Also check the ballads 'Im Gonna make it After All' and 'You're My Everything' and the dancer 'Got To Be ready'. Strong album.

EARTH WIND AND FIRE LAST DAYS AND TIME/ HEAD TO THE SKY CD £13.95
EWF's first two albums for Columbia are now combined on a 2 on 1 set. Highlights include the wickedly funky 'Power' and 'Time Is On Your Side'. Tracks like 'Clover' and 'Evil' are a foretaster of the style that catapulted them to international stardom. Eddie Lobo's 'Zanzibar' is transformed into a 10 minute plus Latin tinged Jazz Funk masterpiece to become the definitive version of this classic.

PRINCE PHILLIP MITCHELL –TOP OF THE LINE CD £9.95
Phillip’s 1979 album inc the standout uplifting modern dancer ‘I’m So happy’ and the string laden mid tempo shuffler ‘Paying The Price’. The mid tempo modern soul ‘Use Your Body’ and floater ‘Top Of The Line’ and the gentle ballads ‘Highlight Of My Life’ and ‘If it Aint Love I’ll Go Away’ are also highlights.

Nice vocal harmony sweet soul album from 1974 recorded at Sigma sound, prod by Tony Silvester and arranged by Bert DeCoteaux. 'Don't Send Nobody Else' is a modern soul anthem, and 'If You Were There' a good Philly dancer. 'Easy' and 'Pick Up' are good mid tempo floaters and 'I Don't Want To Play Around' ,Moving On' and their version of 'Don't Let me Be Lonely ' are nice ballads. Good album.

MARGIE JOSEPH MARGIE CD £22.95
1975 album inc a good version of Bill Withers 'Same Love That Made Me Laugh' and also great versions of the floaters 'Promise Me Your Love' and 'After All This Time' and some nice ballads like 'who Gets Your Love' , 'If You Walked Away' and Sam Dees 'Just As Soon As The Feelings Over'. The semi funky 'Cant Move No Mountains' and 'Sign Of The Times' also score but the standout is once again here own song 'Stay Still' a beautiful atmospheric two stepper covered later by Ronnie Laws. Another great album.

JAMMERS JAMMERS CD £11.95
Classic Salsoul boogie album from 1982 prod by Richie Weeks. 8 boogie tracks Inc their big 'Be Mine Tonight' and 'And You Know That' (both Shep Pettibone and Richie Weeks mixes), but also a couple of great lesser known boogie winners 'What Have You Got To Loose' and 'Straight Down To The Bone'. Also check Funky You Funky Me' and 'I Didn't Mean To Fall In Love With You'. Strong album to keep the feet moving.

DAVID RUFFIN - SO SOON WE CHANGE

Great Ruffin album from 1979 produced by Don Davis for Warner Bros gets a welcome CD release in Japan. 'Let Your Love Rain Down On Me' is an epic mid tempo modern dancer, 'Break My Heart' and 'Morning Sun Looks Blue' are nice ballads allowing David's soulful voice to shine through. The catchy mid tempo 'I Get Excited' and dancer 'Lets Be Together' will please the modern soul fraternity and the mid tempo title track and driving dancer 'Chain On The Brain' are also great.

DAVID RUFFIN - GENTLEMAN RUFFIN

David's second Warner album dating from 1980 was also produced by Don Davis, and contains the great mid tempo floater 'I Wanna Be With You' a duet with Laverna Mason, who also appears on the great two stepper 'Love Supply'. There are two other good steppers 'Slow Dance' and 'Don't You Go Home' , a modern dancer 'Still In love With You' and a couple of mid tempo ballads 'Can We Make Love One More Time' and 'I Got A Thing For You' and a nice ballad 'All I Need' . Great album from a great singer.

LEROY BURGESS - THROWBACK - HARLEM 79-83
12 unreleased tracks from the legendary singer/songwriter/producer recorded in late 70's/early 80's. Some are the original demo's of tracks he wrote for others like 'Its So Easy (You Can Do It dino terell) ', 'Moment Of My Life' (inner life), and 'Fly Girl' (intrique) and 'Youre My Number One' (change) which all stand up well against the released versions because Leroy's voice is so good. Of the 7 new songs the best are the classic Burgess boogie tracks like 'Scandal', 'Midnight In The Streets' , 'Keepin On', 'Under Da Radar' and 'Hold up' whilst 'All Into You' is am id tempo groover. The live cover of the Isleys 'Hello Its Me' is also interesting. This brilliant project is unmissable if you are into Burgess, Boogie or early 80's uptempo soul.

ESTHER PHILLIPS FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM CD £12.95
Esther's first and possibly best Kudu album from 1971, inc her all time classic version of Gil Scott Heron's 'Home Is Where The Hatred Is' one of the best soul tracks of its time. The haunting title track, 'That's All Right With Me' and her version of Marvin's 'Baby I'm For Real' are great down tempo tracks
Allowing her voice to shine through, whilst 'Till My baby Aint Got No Bone' is more bluesy. Feat great band inc Eric Gale, Hank Crawford, Richard Tee and Pretty Purdie. Classic album.

ROZETTA JOHNSON- PERSONAL WOMAN CD £14.95
Really good early to mid 70's Atlanta Soul mainly produced by Sam Dees for the Clinton label. Theres a couple of good dancers in 'Mine Was Real', and the previously unreleased 'You Better Keep What You Got', but the majority of the tracks are great mid tempo and ballads. Highlights are 'A Womans Way' an excellent part spoken/part sung shuffler, 'Who Are You Gonna Love' , 'Holding The losing Hand' , 'How Can You Lose Something You Never Had', 'Personal Woman' , the brassy 'Cant You Just See me' and a great early version of the stepper 'Early Morning Love'.

BILL BRANDON BILL BRANDON CD £11.95
Bill has a great voice not dissimilar to Teddy P in places. This excellent rare modern soul album from 1977 produced by Dillard And Boyce inc the 2-stepper 'Special Occasion' , Modern soul dancer 'Baby Love Is A Two Way Street' the nice beat ballad 'Cant We Just Sit Down and Talk It Over' , and the big prod mid tempo 'Hands Full Of Nothing' and 'Just Cant Walk Away'. Also check the soulful disco dancers 'We Fell in love While Dancing', 'No Danger Of Heartbreak Ahead' and 'Get It While Its Hot'.

BILL BRANDON ON THE RAINBOW ROAD CD £14.95
24 southern soul tracks recorded in Muscle Shoals from 1967-76, prior to his classic album.
'Full Grown Lovin Man' and almost northern 'Something Wonderful' are 60's brassy Memphis style dancers and 'Rainbow Man 'is the best of the 60's ballads. The Sam Dees produced 70's sides are the highlights with the modern dancers 'Whatever I Am I m Yours', and Dillard & Boyce prod 'Streets Got My Lady' outstanding. There's also the nice ballads 'Tag Tag', 'Its All Wrong Its All Right' and 'I'm A Believer Now' and some nice semi funky tracks inc an unreleased version of 'Im Your Puppet'. Nice.

LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY LOLEATTA CD £11.95
Her first Salsoul album from 1976 produced by Baker Harris Young mainly in Philly. Incl the all time classic 'Hit And Run' a fantastic dancer ft in album and Walter Gibbons extended remix versions 'Dreamin' is another classic dancer, and the philly dancers 'We're Getting Stronger' and 'Ripped Off' will also get dancefloors alight. The ballads recorded in Chicago and produced by Floyd Smith show the deep soul side of Loleatta especially her version of Sam Dees 'Worn Out Broken Heart' which she rips up with possibly her best ever vocal performance, and her version of big ballad Curtis 'What Now'. Excellent.

PIECES OF PEACE PIECES OF PEACE CD £13.95 LP £13.95
This previously unreleased material was recorded in Chicago in the early 70's and is a mix of Funk and Spiritual Jazz ft Derf Reklaw and EWF horns. In style, this seven piece band is not unlike the Pharoahs. 'Pollution' is a superb slice of leftfield Funk that echoes Exit 9's driving street sound. 'Peace & Blessings' hits a wickedly jazzy groove with its walking bassline ,whilst 'Peace And Blessings' starts with EWF style vocal harmonies and then builds into a spritiual jazz workout. Highly recommended

Two of Billy's best albums on one CD. The pre -Me and Mrs Jones 'East' is an all time classic a shuffling jazzy soul atmospheric shifter with Billy's vocals floating over the top. His versions of 'This Is Your Life', 'Compared To What' and 'Magic Carpet Ride' are also good. The epic 10 min 'War Of The Gods' 10 is enthralling, the breezy/brassy 'Whole Towns Talking' and catchy 'Thanks For Saving My Life' , big ballad 'I See The light' and bluesy 'Peace Holy Peace' are also good. BURTON INC LA WILL MAKE YOU PAY $$$ CD £22.95
Reissue of impossibly rare late 70's album in the style of Brainstorm/aquarian dream. The title track, 'Why Don't You Let Me Know', 'You Know I Love You' are bright brassy dancers (ala Youre a star) which would work well on the dancefloor. The highlights though are the mid tempo ballads 'Sincerely Yours', 'Who You Gonna Get' and especially 'Groovin At The Night Club' where Barbara Burton vocals really shine and her brothers ? harmonise brilliantly. Well produced for such a small label record, a real find.

TEMPTATIONS HEAR TO TEMPT YOU CD £12.95 (LTD)
Great lesser known Temps Atlantic album from 1977 produced in Philly by Baker Harris Young, in the style of the Love Committee album. 'Think For Yourself' , 'In A Lifetime', 'Snake In The Grass', 'Its Time For Love' and 'Read Between The lines' are typical Philly dancers whilst the ballads 'I Could Never Stop Loving you' , 'Can We Come And Share In love' and 'Lets Live In Peace' bring out the best of the Temps vocals. Under- rated album.

JJ BARNES BORN AGAIN/DEBBIE TAYLOR COMIN DOWN ON YOU CD £12.95
JJ Barnes was a great underground singer with a similar voice to Marvin. This 1973 Patrick Adams Perception album contains some of his finest post Ric-Tic moments. The Invictus style mid tempo dancers 'Cant See Me Leaving You' and 'Good men Don't Grow on Trees' , mid tempo 'Wishful Thinking' and 'No If's And's Or But's'and the ballads 'You're Just A Living Doll' and 'Time Is Love' are all good. Debbie Taylor's album incl her great modern soul version of 'No If's…' , the modern dancer ''No Deposit No Return' ballads 'Eye Doctor', 'To Sad To Tell' and 'Second To None'. bonus tracks Black Ivory's versions of 'No If's..', 'Time is Love' and their definitive take of 'Wishful Thinking'. Classic 70's soul.

Main Ingredient were one of the leading vocal harmony groups of the 70's and here are 22 of their singles. Many are outstanding but particularly the great 70's dancer 'Happiness Is Just Around The Bend', Willie Hutch's stepper 'California My Way', and the modern dancers 'Good Old Days' and 'Shame On The World'. Friends were a vocal quartet (2 male/2 female) with a similar sound to 5th Dimension on the border of Soul and Pop during the late 60's/early 70's. Their biggest hit was 'Grazin In The Grass' a real winner, other covers inc 'I've Never Found a Girl' but Sweet Young Thing Like You' is a nice harmony mid tempo track. 'Distinct' inc the big sound mid tempo plodder 'We Got A Good Thing Goin' , 'Working On A Groovy Thong' and the outstanding modern soul 'It's Sunday' and 'let Yourself Go'.
